2025 ended up being a pretty decent year for movies, with some true standouts like Marty Supreme, Weapons, and Hamnet. But with the sun setting on 2025, it’s time to look forward to the films being released in 2026. And boy are there a lot of sequels and adaptations. I suppose that’s just the nature of modern day cinema and that’s not to say that there won’t be some original films that really blow us away this year. But those tend to be a bit more under the radar until closer to release. Even still, I’m pretty excited for many releases this year and think that we should be in store for some great additions to already established franchises. So let’s take a look at some of the upcoming movies in 2026.

And don’t forget to check out our 2026 Horror Preview as well!

Wuthering Heights (February 13th)

Emerald Fennell has really made quite the impact with films like Promising Young Woman and Saltburn. Now it’s time for her to adapt one of the most famous novels out there with Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. It is “A passionate and tumultuous love story set against the backdrop of the Yorkshire moors, exploring the intense and destructive relationship between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw.” Pairing Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi seems like the work of some mad genius. The Valentine’s Day release is sure to make this one another win for Fennell.

Crime 101 (February 13)

Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, and Halle Berry star in this action-thriller based on the work of Don Winslow (writer of Savages). Directed by Bart Layton, whose American Animals was quite the Sundance gem eight years back, this is the kind of adrenaline-charged original fare you don’t get too often in theaters anymore. Here’s the synopsis:

Set against the sun-bleached grit of Los Angeles, CRIME 101 weaves the tale of an elusive thief (Chris Hemsworth) whose high-stakes heists unfolding along the iconic 101 freeway have mystified police. When he eyes the score of a lifetime with hopes of this being his final job, his path collides with a disillusioned insurance broker (Halle Berry) who is facing her own crossroads, forcing the two to collaborate. Determined to crack the case, a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo) closes in on the operation, raising the stakes even higher. As the multimillion-dollar heist approaches, the line between hunter and hunted begins to blur, and all three are forced to confront the cost of their choices–and the realization that there’s no turning back.

project hail mary

Project Hail Mary (March 20th)

Andy Weir writes some of the most interesting science fiction of the modern era and it’s been far too long since we got an adaptation of one of his other big works, The Martian. The story involves: “Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.” While the trailer gave away a little much for my liking, it’s hard to count against Ryan Gosling in the entertainment department.

Disclosure Day (June 12th)

I’m still not sold on the title, but it’s hard not to be excited at the concept of Steven Spielberg returning to the world of Aliens with this UFO thriller. With a cast that includes Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Wyatt Russell and Colman Domingo, this look very intriguing. Plot details are still pretty scant but it looks more in line with Close Encounters than War of the Worlds.

Toy Story 5

Toy Story 5 (June 12th)

It’s always interesting to see what new obstacles the filmmakers manage to put in the way of our favorite toys, and the plot for Toy Story 5 seems like a long time coming: “Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of the gang’s jobs are challenged when they’re introduced to electronics, a new threat to playtime.” With all the main cast returning, plus fun additions like Conan O’Brien, it’ll be nice to see another story within this world. While the third entry provided the perfect ending, the fourth proved that there’s still some juice left in the tank, and I’m excited to see what they do with this one.

Supergirl (June 26th, 2026)

The second film in James Gunn’s DCU has some pretty high expectations going in. But if Superman was any indication, we’re in for a much less gloomy version of a Superhero movie. And while we just got a taste of her last year, this origin story should give us a better overall picture of what Supes’ cousin has been up to. Plus, it’s going to be awesome to see Jason Momoa’s Lobo chomp on a cigar in a role that he was born to play.

the odyssey

The Odyssey (July 17th)

I’m not sure if there’s any other film releasing that has the level of hype of this film. With opening day showings already being sold out for the last 6 months, there’s nothing quite like a Christopher Nolan movie. For those that never had to read the book in school, The Odyssey “After the Trojan War, Odysseus faces a dangerous voyage back to Ithaca, meeting creatures like the Cyclops Polyphemus, Sirens, and Circe along the way.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 31st)

There’s a certain excitement to any new Spider-man moving coming out and, thankfully, we’ve never been too many years without one. With Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton taking over behind the camera, it’ll be interesting to see what he brings to the table. Even more exciting is that this should be putting Spidey more street level and allow us to see him less MCU-afied. Though, it’s hard to say since this will also be featuring a tons of other characters like Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, Jon Bernthal’s Punisher and Sadie Sink’s mystery character. Here’s hoping they allow the character to be a bit more independent and less reliant on what’s going on with the rest of the MCU.

The Social Reckoning (October 9th)

I would have never expected there to be a sequel to David Fincher’s The Social Network yet here we are. And honestly? I’m actually pretty intrigued. A lot has happened in the world of Mark Zuckerberg since the creation of Facebook and it will be interesting to see how writer Aaron Sorkin (who is now taking over directing duties) presents the story which follows “Frances Haugen, a young Facebook engineer, who enlisted the help of Jeff Horwitz, a Wall Street Journal reporter, to blow the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise of the Reaping (November 20th)

I’ve been pretty let down by many of the films in the Hunger Game series so when I tell you this one has me excited, just know that I’m a hard sell for these. But having read the book that this one is based, this is easily the best story yet and I can’t wait to see some of these scenes come to life. The casting has been perfect and it’ll be great to see Haymitch’s time in the games. Plus, it’s cool that they were able to get Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson back, even if it’s likely just a bookends role, where Harrelson’s Haymitch is likely telling them his story. Either way Sunrise of the Reaping “Explores Panem 24 years before Katniss’ saga, starting on the morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, where a young Haymitch Abernathy participates.

Avengers Doomsday (December 18th)

It seems like just about everyone who’s ever put on a supersuit is returning for Doomsday, not to mention Robert Downey Jr, whose Tony Stark famously died in the last Avengers teamup. Whether it’s Marvel calling a hail mary and trying to save the MCU is irrelevant if they’re able to pull off a massive spectacle that brings in the money. And they’re doing a great job of building that hype already as there have already been multiple teaser trailers (four revealing different characters returning). The story appears to feature Doctor Doom going after the children of famous superheroes, causing them to all band together to try and take him out. We’ve got the OG X-Men returning.

Dune 4, Denis Villeneuve

Dune Part Three (December 18th)

Part of me thinks that Dune is going to move at some point to avoid Doomsday. I just can’t imagine it competing with a behemoth like an Avengers film, but I guess crazier things have been done. We’re still following Timothy Chalamet’s Paul Atreides but given how crazy the source material gets, I’ll be curious to see how it translates to a movie, as it’s always felt pretty unadaptable. Though, if anyone can do it, I’m sure Denis Villeneuve is up to the task.

What film are you looking forward to the most in 2026? Are there any Original films that you think will be sleeper hits? Let us know in the comments!

Amazon MGM Studios has launched the premiere of the brand new trailer for the Ryan Gosling astronaut sci-fi movie Project Hail Mary. The film, which is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, has been given the release date of March 20, 2026. Amy Pascal, Gosling, Lord, Miller, Aditya Sood, Rachel O’Connor and Andy Weir are all on board as producers of the film. Drew Goddard wrote the adapted screenplay based on the Andy Weir novel. Weir had also written the novel for The Martian, which served as source material for the Matt Damon film of the same name. Goddard is also set to executive produce with his Goddard Textiles partner Sarah Esberg, along with Ken Kao.

Project Hail Mary was filmed for IMAX. Gosling is joined by Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung and Milana Vayntrub. The synopsis reads, “Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.” In the trailer, we are treated to more interactions between Gosling and the alien lifeform that was teased in the first trailer, including a cute bit about the “fist bump.”

MGM’s Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy said in a statement, “All of us at MGM are incredibly excited by this literal dream team coming together around Andy’s astounding novel. With their masterful ability to balance drama, action, and humor, Phil and Chris are the perfect filmmakers to take on this unique material and we are thrilled to have them partner with Ryan, Ken, Andy, Amy and Aditya to bring this movie to life for big screens everywhere.” Amy Pascal added, “I couldn’t be more excited to be working with this dream team of filmmakers. Mike, Chris, Phil, Ryan, Andy and Aditya are all the best of the best in their fields. I can’t wait to get going on this amazing project with them.”

San Diego Comic-Con is in full force and one of the exciting panels being featured was Project Hail Mary. In attendance for the Project Hail Mary panel were co-director Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, star Ryan Gosling, screenwriter/EP Drew Goddard, and, showing his faith in the adaptation, Andy Weir, author of the novel on which the film is based. During the panel, Miller noted that this was easily the most rewarding collaboration that he and Lord had ever had, which is saying something. As far as that collab goes, special time was devoted to waiting specifically for Goddard – who also adapted Weir’s The Martian for Ridley Scott – to climb on board.

Our Chris Bumbray was in the fray when the first five minutes of the movie were showcased to the exclusive crowd. Additionally, ScreenRant reports that Weir was glowing about what he had seen from the movie so far. Weir reveals, “I’ve seen cuts of the film, and it’s really good, guys. It’s really good. These guys, they’re amazing directors, everybody knows that. I couldn’t be happier with how things turned out.” He then adds, “I couldn’t ask for better talent in every aspect… we waited for Drew [Goddard]… We had to wait several months for him to finish [the project he was working on.]”

Anything that was complicated in the book, they didn’t change. They saw it as a problem to solve. As Miller says, this movie is a PC, not a MAC. Hype has already been strong for the movie (the trailer has exceeded 400 million views, the most for an original movie ever) but with this additional footage showcased at SDCC, it jumps even higher on our list of most anticipated movies of next year.

Here is the official write-up for Project Hail Mary, as per SDCC: “The movie follows a science teacher who wakes up on a spaceship, lightyears from home, with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: to solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction . . . but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.”

Project Hail Mary will be the first time the team of Lord and Miller step behind the camera in over a decade, as they have shifted to producing for movies and TV and, of course, co-writing Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse to great acclaim.

One of the San Diego Comic-Con panels we were most excited about was Project Hail Mary, which audiences got a glimpse of on Saturday in coveted Hall H.

As for the first look at Project Hail Mary itself, our own Chris Bumbray was in attendance and gave us some insight into the footage. Attendees got to see the first five minutes of Project Hail Mary, which showed Gosling’s character waking up on his spaceship following an induced coma, which kicks the story into high gear. Viewers, too, may feel like they have navigated time, as the film opens with an MGM/United Artists logo from the 1980s.

Following that footage, the group showcased a scene with Sandra Hüller’s Eva Stratt, who serves as Gosling’s superior in the film. Gosling’s character, Dr. Ryland Grace, has authored an article suggesting that there may be lifeforms that have no relation to water; as it turns out, NASA found an alien he put under analysis. Regarding the character, Gosling noted that, while he is a highly intelligent man, he’s meant to come off as normal and relatable. Take, for example, another scene that was spotlighted at SDCC, where Grace experiences zero gravity for the first time, becoming overwhelmed and terrified in a way that the audience will no doubt feel as he heads towards a potential encounter. The setup for his next experiences will allow him to believe in himself after so much time being down and out.

As with the zero G scene – which was given approval by actual astronauts – accuracy is also key for Project Hail Mary in regards to the science depicted on screen, whether as major plot points or background filler. On the more technical side of things, every set is practical, including a 100-foot-long tunnel that is lit in such a way (with due credit to DP Greig Fraser) that it took the power from two other soundstages!

Weir asked, if your planet has life, what do you need for intelligent life? The answer: pack mentality, language, and a form of empathy. Goddard said that, from a screenwriting POV, this project is a nightmare. One character is human, the other is a rock. But they have empathy in that both characters are always trying to see the world from the other’s POV. Rocky is a puppet – a practical creature so it could have a real interaction with Gosling. It’s a mix of puppetry and animation. He has no eyes or face and five legs. It was a challenge to create a loveable creature out of minerals. SDCC panel attendees didn’t see Rocky, just his hand in the first scene where they meet.

The first trailer for Project Hail Mary dropped last week and has already made a huge splash. CinemaCon 2025 keeps truckin’, and tonight, we have a presentation from Amazon! The studio’s been in the news lately with speculation about the future of the James Bond franchise, exciting new titles coming to Prime Video, and more. Tonight’s showcase began with a trailer for Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s Project Hail Mary, a dystopian sci-fi film starring Ryan Gosling, Milana Vayntrub, and Sandra Hüller.

Project Hail Mary is based on a book by Andy Weir, and our editor-in-chief, Chris Bumbray, says the movie looks very much like The Martian. Gosling is a high school teacher recruited on a mission to save the planet. The difference is a lot of it is him preparing for a suicide mission. The trailer includes a lot of comedy but also has a considerable scale. The footage shows Gosling on his mission alone as he grows a huge beard. The film looks like a big swing from Amazon/ MGM. The trailer got a huge reaction from the audience. The preview ends with Gosling meeting an alien lifeform with whom he bonds. The alien’s name is Rocky, and he is “the most lovable alien since ET.” The score is by Harry Styles, a sign of the times. Do you feel old yet? I certainly do.

Lord and Miller were in attendance, saying Grieg Frasier shoots the movie. The duo stresses the need to see Project Hail Mary in theaters. Meanwhile, Gosling joked, “We tried to put it on TV once, and it didn’t fit.”

Based on the novel by Andy Weir (The Martian), Project Hail Mary stars Ryan Gosling as “a middle school science teacher, Ryland Grace, who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or how he got there. He must figure out how to complete his interstellar mission to save Earth from an astronomical catastrophe completely alone, until he meets a mysterious alien who has traveled light years to save his own species from the same fate.Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall) also stars as Eva Stratt, Ryland’s superior.

Who’s ready for more from Amazon’s Masters of the Universe? The studio debuted concept art from its highly-anticipated film starring Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam, aka He-Man. Galitzine looks strikingly like the famous cartoon character. He’s in incredible shape. Amazon leans in a heavy fantasy direction for the film. There seem to be many sword fights, and the costumes are insane. It looks like the classic cartoon in ways we did not expect.

Masters of the Universe follows “ten-year-old Prince Adam, who crashed to Earth in a spaceship and was separated from his magical Power Sword—the only link to his home on Eternia. After tracking it down almost two decades later, Prince Adam is whisked back across space to defend his home planet against the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat such a powerful villain, Prince Adam will first need to uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man: the most powerful man in the Universe.

Nicholas Galitzine (Mary & George) stars as He-Man, and he’s joined by Camila Mendes (Riverdale) as Teela, Jared Leto (Morbius) as the villainous Skeletor, Idris Elba (Luther) as Man-at-Arms (a.k.a. Duncan), GLOW’s Alison Brie as Skeletor’s second-in-command Evil-Lyn, Morena Baccarin (Deadpool & Wolverine) as The Sorceress, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson (Captain America: Brave New World) as Malcolm (a.k.a. Fisto), Sam C. Wilson (Dodger) as Trap Jaw, Hafthor Bjornsson (Game of Thrones) as Goat Man, Kojo Attah (The Beekeeper) as Tri-Klops, and James Purefoy (A Knight’s Tale) and Charlotte Riley (Peaky Blinders) as He-Man’s parents, King Randor and Queen Marlena.

Masters of the Universe is directed by Travis Knight from a script by Chris Butler and is set to hit theaters on June 5, 2026.

Is space ample enough to withstand the power of two of Hollywood’s brightest stars? We’re about to find out when Oscar-nominated actress Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall) co-stars alongside Ryan Gosling (The Fall Guy, Stay, Barbie) for the upcoming interstellar epic Project Hail Mary. The feature-length project hails from Amazon MGM Studios, with Amy Pascal, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Aditya Sood producing.

Lord and Miller will direct Project Hail Mary from a script by Drew Goddard (The Martian, Bad Times at the El Royale, The Cabin in the Woods). The film will be shot in IMAX and released wide on March 20, 2026. It is based on the Andy Weir novel of the same name—that’s right, the same guy who wrote The Martian. According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, the plot revolves around “a middle school science teacher, Ryland Grace (Gosling), who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or how he got there. He must figure out how to complete his interstellar mission to save Earth from an astronomical catastrophe completely alone, until he meets a mysterious alien who has traveled light years to save his own species from the same fate.”

Man, the science fiction genre has given me trust issues. My first thought is that this alien is doing its best to ensure humankind’s extinction. I hope I’m wrong, but like I said, trust issues.

German actress Sandra Hüller brought the house down with her show-stopping performance in last year’s Anatomy of a Fall, focusing on a woman suspected of murder after her husband’s death. In the intense drama, the woman’s half-blind son is her only salvation as the sole witness to the incident. Hüller brings the goods to the Justine Triet-directed thriller, starring Swann Arlaud, Milo Machado-Graner, Antoine Reinartz, and Samuel Theis.

What do you think about Sandra Hüller joining Ryan Gosling for Project Hail Mary? What would you do if you woke up alone on a spacecraft floating in space? Would you succumb to space madness? Gather your wits and attempt to radio home. Find the nearest airlock and eject yourself into the void. I’d give an honest shot at survival until finally giving up the ghost and preparing myself for a leisurely spacewalk. Let us know how you’d react in the comments below.
