2025 Was a Rough Year for Hollywood — Can 2026 Turn Things Around?
Chris

And so another year is in the books, and 2025 proved to be a rough one for Hollywood. While box office grosses ticked up slightly, they remain well below pre-pandemic norms—levels the industry has never truly recovered.

Several formerly indestructible franchises stumbled. Marvel, in particular, is likely uneasy after the relative underperformance of Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts (though Fantastic Four: First Steps performed reasonably well).

Even DC wasn’t immune. While Superman earned praise, its roughly $600 million global gross would once have been considered merely acceptable for a superhero tentpole—not a triumph.

Is Netflix a Threat to Theatrical Movies?

One of the biggest clouds hanging over the industry is the possibility of Netflix acquiring Warner Bros. If that deal goes through, the streamer’s proposed 17-day theatrical window would be devastating for exhibitors. At a time when theaters are already fighting for relevance, such a move could accelerate the decline of traditional exhibition.

Why 2026 Could Be a Make-or-Break Year

Despite the gloom, 2026 is shaping up to be massive—and potentially decisive for several studios. At the center of it all is Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday.

If that film underperforms, it would represent a seismic blow to what was once the most reliable franchise in Hollywood history. Success, on the other hand, could help stabilize the genre and restore some confidence in big-screen spectacle.

Are There Too Many Sequels and Reboots?

One thing is immediately obvious when looking at the 2026 slate: it’s dominated by sequels and reboots. Original films are few and far between, though there are notable exceptions—most prominently Disclosure Day from Steven Spielberg.

We’ve already posted an extensive horror preview, along with another broader movie preview earlier this week, but the overall trend is clear: studios are leaning heavily on familiar IP as risk aversion continues to define the post-pandemic era.

Tyler

2025 ended up being a pretty decent year for movies, with some true standouts like Marty Supreme, Weapons, and Hamnet. But with the sun setting on 2025, it’s time to look forward to the films being released in 2026. And boy are there a lot of sequels and adaptations. I suppose that’s just the nature of modern day cinema and that’s not to say that there won’t be some original films that really blow us away this year. But those tend to be a bit more under the radar until closer to release. Even still, I’m pretty excited for many releases this year and think that we should be in store for some great additions to already established franchises. So let’s take a look at some of the upcoming movies in 2026.

And don’t forget to check out our 2026 Horror Preview as well!

Wuthering Heights (February 13th)

Emerald Fennell has really made quite the impact with films like Promising Young Woman and Saltburn. Now it’s time for her to adapt one of the most famous novels out there with Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. It is “A passionate and tumultuous love story set against the backdrop of the Yorkshire moors, exploring the intense and destructive relationship between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw.” Pairing Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi seems like the work of some mad genius. The Valentine’s Day release is sure to make this one another win for Fennell.

Crime 101 (February 13)

Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, and Halle Berry star in this action-thriller based on the work of Don Winslow (writer of Savages). Directed by Bart Layton, whose American Animals was quite the Sundance gem eight years back, this is the kind of adrenaline-charged original fare you don’t get too often in theaters anymore. Here’s the synopsis:

Set against the sun-bleached grit of Los Angeles, CRIME 101 weaves the tale of an elusive thief (Chris Hemsworth) whose high-stakes heists unfolding along the iconic 101 freeway have mystified police. When he eyes the score of a lifetime with hopes of this being his final job, his path collides with a disillusioned insurance broker (Halle Berry) who is facing her own crossroads, forcing the two to collaborate. Determined to crack the case, a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo) closes in on the operation, raising the stakes even higher. As the multimillion-dollar heist approaches, the line between hunter and hunted begins to blur, and all three are forced to confront the cost of their choices–and the realization that there’s no turning back.

project hail mary

Project Hail Mary (March 20th)

Andy Weir writes some of the most interesting science fiction of the modern era and it’s been far too long since we got an adaptation of one of his other big works, The Martian. The story involves: “Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.” While the trailer gave away a little much for my liking, it’s hard to count against Ryan Gosling in the entertainment department.

Disclosure Day (June 12th)

I’m still not sold on the title, but it’s hard not to be excited at the concept of Steven Spielberg returning to the world of Aliens with this UFO thriller. With a cast that includes Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Wyatt Russell and Colman Domingo, this look very intriguing. Plot details are still pretty scant but it looks more in line with Close Encounters than War of the Worlds.

Toy Story 5

Toy Story 5 (June 12th)

It’s always interesting to see what new obstacles the filmmakers manage to put in the way of our favorite toys, and the plot for Toy Story 5 seems like a long time coming: “Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of the gang’s jobs are challenged when they’re introduced to electronics, a new threat to playtime.” With all the main cast returning, plus fun additions like Conan O’Brien, it’ll be nice to see another story within this world. While the third entry provided the perfect ending, the fourth proved that there’s still some juice left in the tank, and I’m excited to see what they do with this one.

Supergirl (June 26th, 2026)

The second film in James Gunn’s DCU has some pretty high expectations going in. But if Superman was any indication, we’re in for a much less gloomy version of a Superhero movie. And while we just got a taste of her last year, this origin story should give us a better overall picture of what Supes’ cousin has been up to. Plus, it’s going to be awesome to see Jason Momoa’s Lobo chomp on a cigar in a role that he was born to play.

the odyssey

The Odyssey (July 17th)

I’m not sure if there’s any other film releasing that has the level of hype of this film. With opening day showings already being sold out for the last 6 months, there’s nothing quite like a Christopher Nolan movie. For those that never had to read the book in school, The Odyssey “After the Trojan War, Odysseus faces a dangerous voyage back to Ithaca, meeting creatures like the Cyclops Polyphemus, Sirens, and Circe along the way.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 31st)

There’s a certain excitement to any new Spider-man moving coming out and, thankfully, we’ve never been too many years without one. With Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton taking over behind the camera, it’ll be interesting to see what he brings to the table. Even more exciting is that this should be putting Spidey more street level and allow us to see him less MCU-afied. Though, it’s hard to say since this will also be featuring a tons of other characters like Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, Jon Bernthal’s Punisher and Sadie Sink’s mystery character. Here’s hoping they allow the character to be a bit more independent and less reliant on what’s going on with the rest of the MCU.

The Social Reckoning (October 9th)

I would have never expected there to be a sequel to David Fincher’s The Social Network yet here we are. And honestly? I’m actually pretty intrigued. A lot has happened in the world of Mark Zuckerberg since the creation of Facebook and it will be interesting to see how writer Aaron Sorkin (who is now taking over directing duties) presents the story which follows “Frances Haugen, a young Facebook engineer, who enlisted the help of Jeff Horwitz, a Wall Street Journal reporter, to blow the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise of the Reaping (November 20th)

I’ve been pretty let down by many of the films in the Hunger Game series so when I tell you this one has me excited, just know that I’m a hard sell for these. But having read the book that this one is based, this is easily the best story yet and I can’t wait to see some of these scenes come to life. The casting has been perfect and it’ll be great to see Haymitch’s time in the games. Plus, it’s cool that they were able to get Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson back, even if it’s likely just a bookends role, where Harrelson’s Haymitch is likely telling them his story. Either way Sunrise of the Reaping “Explores Panem 24 years before Katniss’ saga, starting on the morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, where a young Haymitch Abernathy participates.

Avengers Doomsday (December 18th)

It seems like just about everyone who’s ever put on a supersuit is returning for Doomsday, not to mention Robert Downey Jr, whose Tony Stark famously died in the last Avengers teamup. Whether it’s Marvel calling a hail mary and trying to save the MCU is irrelevant if they’re able to pull off a massive spectacle that brings in the money. And they’re doing a great job of building that hype already as there have already been multiple teaser trailers (four revealing different characters returning). The story appears to feature Doctor Doom going after the children of famous superheroes, causing them to all band together to try and take him out. We’ve got the OG X-Men returning.

Dune 4, Denis Villeneuve

Dune Part Three (December 18th)

Part of me thinks that Dune is going to move at some point to avoid Doomsday. I just can’t imagine it competing with a behemoth like an Avengers film, but I guess crazier things have been done. We’re still following Timothy Chalamet’s Paul Atreides but given how crazy the source material gets, I’ll be curious to see how it translates to a movie, as it’s always felt pretty unadaptable. Though, if anyone can do it, I’m sure Denis Villeneuve is up to the task.

The moment is finally here. Universal Pictures has now unveiled the first trailer for The Odyssey — the new anticipated film from Christopher Nolan after his last movie, Oppenheimer, swept the Oscars in 2024. Nolan is following it up with an epic historical drama of immense proportions. The project has been building quite mythic hype with it being the director’s most expensive film, which includes being shot entirely with IMAX cameras.

The Odyssey doesn’t release until the summer, but a special peek of the film was seen in theatres recently. A nearly six-minute prologue was shown ahead of IMAX 70mm screenings of Sinners and One Battle After Another, and the first reactions from movie-goers who have seen the prologue are incredibly positive. After only seeing a few minutes of the movie, they’re already calling it breathtaking, jaw-dropping, and possibly even the biggest movie ever made. And the hype will only build more from here.

The Odyssey is based on an ancient Greek poem by Homer that tells the tale of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his journey home after the ten-year Trojan War. The trip was perilous, including encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the witch-goddess Circe. At home, Odysseus is presumed dead, and his wife Penelope and son Telemachus must contend with groups of unruly suitors who each want Penelope’s hand in marriage to control the kingdom.

Nolan’s take on the story stars Matt Damon, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Mia Goth, Zendaya, Elliot Page, John Leguizamo, Samantha Morton, Ryan Hurst, Logan Marshall-Green, Lupita Nyong’o, Josh Stewart, Benny Safdie, Corey Hawkins, and Elyes Gabel.

Filming took place in Morocco (Aït Benhaddou for Troy), Greece (Peloponnese, Pylos, Methoni Castle, Nestor’s Cave), Italy (Favignana, Aeolian Islands in Sicily), Scotland (Moray Firth coast, Findlater Castle), and Iceland. Favignana, Sicily’s “Goat Island” is “believed to be the place where Homer envisioned Odysseus landed with his motley crew to barbecue goats and stock up on food. The idyllic isle is part of the Egadi archipelago off of Sicily’s north-west coast.“

Tom Holland has said that Nolan’s The Odyssey is unlike anything we’ve ever seen. The journey is due to hit theaters on July 17, 2026.

A new poster

Today, Universal has just released a brand new one-sheet for the adaptation. The one-sheet seems like a teaser poster and features none of the cast’s faces. Only the back of Odysseus’ battle helmet is front and center. The helmet sports a cool design with the back having what looks like a spinal column running down the “ponytail” part. The color grade is an interesting one as the poster is in a blue-ish tint, not unlike the blue tint Nolan gave The Dark Knight. Meanwhile, the spine part of the helmet immediately pops out with its gold finish. Take a look at the poster below!

Update: If you’d like to get a new look at Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, you should be heading to IMAX theaters this weekend to catch a nearly six-minute prologue of the upcoming epic. It has been confirmed that the prologue will begin on December 12 ahead of IMAX 70mm screenings of Sinners and One Battle After Another. A shorter, but still full-length, trailer will play the following weekend, ahead of screenings of Avatar: Fire and Ash.

— Original article follows —

Christopher Nolan’s next epic doesn’t release until next summer, but there’s a chance audiences could catch a glimpse of the filmmaker’s anticipated opus in early December if a rumor turns out to be true. According to multiple reports, a prologue for The Odyssey could play in IMAX theaters ahead of two of this year’s best movies: Sinners and One Battle After Another.

How Long is the Rumored Prologue?

According to the rumor, a 5-minute and 47-second prologue of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey will be attached to screenings of both films, starting on December 11. Additionally, a new trailer for The Odyssey will also play before screenings of Avatar: Fire and Ash, which hits theaters on December 19.

While nothing is confirmed, the footage may be the same as what Empire Magazine described in its recent cover story, which featured the massive wooden horse being dragged with ropes toward the gates of Troy. Yeah, that horse. After the horse infiltrates the base, all hell lets loose as the ruse gets revealed. The prologue could feature a Cyclops at the end as well. We won’t know until we see it for ourselves.

What Inspired Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey?

The Odyssey is an ancient Greek poem by Homer that tells the tale of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his journey home after the ten-year Trojan War.

Who Stars in The Odyssey?

Naturally, the cast of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is as epic as the poem the film is based, with Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Mia Goth, Zendaya, Elliot Page, John Leguizamo, Samantha Morton, Ryan Hurst, Logan Marshall-Green, Lupita Nyong’o, Josh Stewart, Benny Safdie, Corey Hawkins, and Elyes Gabel leading the cast.

Why Could The Odyssey Be Nolan’s Most Epic Film Ever?

How do we know The Odyssey could be one of the most epic movies ever to grace the silver screen? Apparently, some theater owners have agreed to outfit their cinemas with special equipment to ensure that Nolan’s movie generates the desired amount of juice. Such is the case with IMAX and Cinemark, who will partner for the upcoming release of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.

According to reports, IMAX and Cinemark have reached a deal to install new equipment or make significant upgrades to 17 theaters across the United States and South America. The partnership comes at a time when theaters hope to give audiences more bang for their buck with films like Avengers: Doomsday, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and Nolan’s The Odyssey, all of which are set to release in 2026. It’s also worth noting that The Odyssey is the first movie to shoot entirely in IMAX, so be sure to buy your tickets accordingly.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is looking like a true epic, with the film being the first movie to be entirely shot with IMAX cameras. We recently reported on the new tech on the IMAX cameras being a game-changer for the director. Additionally, IMAX has instituted a “blimp” cover that engulfs the new cameras, which would stifle much of the noise from the mechanism. Nolan explained, “The blimp system is a game-changer. You can be shooting a foot from [an actor’s] face while they’re whispering and get usable sound. What that opens up are intimate moments of performance on the world’s most beautiful format.”

While there is a teaser trailer that has been shown to audiences in theaters, a true look at the film has yet to be dropped online. Recently, we started getting a first look at the movie with a series of images from Empire’s latest 2026 movie preview. The publication has recently unveiled a few more photos, including a look at Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Zendaya as Athena and John Leguizamo as Eumaeus. We also get a couple previews of the battle scenes that are in store for the film. Check them out below!

While Christopher Nolan has gone from Batman films to heady sci-fi films to historical dramas, one thing that seemed to be a common issue throughout is the sound mixing on his films. In early IMAX prologue previews for 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, it became a problem when Tom Hardy’s Bane had his dialogue muffled by his mask. When the film was finally released, it was noticeably remixed with a clearer audio track. Since then, with movies like Tenet and Oppenheimer, many have complained that the music had become too overbearing, which made it difficult to hear the dialogue.

It has been discovered that the problem might lie with the IMAX cameras that Nolan used on his films. The cameras are giant and are notoriously loud, which made it difficult to capture on-set sound. The conflict here is that Nolan seemingly likes to use the natural sound and does not place an over-reliance on post-production ADR, which would have normally given the movies a much clearer sound to mix from. So, the overbearing soundtrack may be a mask to hide the imperfections. According to Variety, the problem with the sound may have been solved with the new revolutionary IMAX cameras being used on the production of The Odyssey.

Nolan’s cinematographer, Hoyte van Hoytema, revealed that he tested the new cameras by filming a child reading Bowie’s “Sound And Vision” lyrics to see if it could record dialogue clearly. Hoytema explained, “I presented Chris with a very big close-up of a child on the IMAX screen, reciting David Bowie’s ‘Sound And Vision’ from a piece of paper. It was very touching: that level of intimacy in both image and sound, fused together, projected in the theatre.” Nolan reacted by saying the footage was “electrifying.” The director noted, “We never would have been able to get those shots before.”

It’s also worth noting that The Odyssey is the first movie to shoot entirely in IMAX.

Per the agreement, four new IMAX with Laser systems will be added in the U.S., and another in South America will be “actively explored.” Additionally, 12 systems will be upgraded to IMAX with Laser, making Cinemark’s entire footprint capable of using the format. Additionally, three IMAX 70mm projection systems will go live in Cinemark Seven Bridges in the Chicago suburb of Woodridge, as well as sites in Colorado Springs, CO, and Rochester, NY. All three locations are set to be operational before The Odyssey’s release on July 17.

How do we know The Odyssey could be one of the most epic movies ever to grace the silver screen? Apparently, some theater owners have agreed to outfit their cinemas with special equipment to ensure that Nolan’s movie generates the desired amount of juice. Such is the case with IMAX and Cinemark, who will partner for the upcoming release of Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey.

It’s also worth noting that The Odyssey is the first movie to shoot entirely in IMAX, so buy your tickets accordingly.

All three locations are set to be operational before The Odyssey’s release on July 17.

“Cinemark expanding its commitment to the very best of what IMAX has to offer – both IMAX with Laser and IMAX 70mm film — underscores the value we’re delivering for our exhibition partners in today’s marketplace,” IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond said.

Cinemark CEO Sean Gamble added, “Upgrading our IMAX locations to IMAX with Laser and activating additional 70mm film systems further expands and enhances the immersive options we off our guests. These upgrades reflect our commitment to delivering high-quality, differentiated experiences that drive greater value perception, loyalty, and frequency across all types of films.”

Imagine being so special that theaters upgrade their equipment to host your film. That’s quite the feather in Christopher Nolan’s cap.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is building quite mythic hype with it being the director’s most expensive film, which includes being shot entirely with IMAX cameras. IMAX boss Rich Gelfond had explained, “A year before Chris started filming The Odyssey, he called me and said he wanted to make a whole film shot with IMAX cameras.” Gelfond added, “That couldn’t be done for a lot of reasons. There were lots of issues.” Then, he said, “‘I’m going to give you a challenge. If you can figure out how to solve these problems, I’m going to make Odyssey 100% film with film with IMAX cameras’, and we’ve solved his problems. So, this will be the first film ever, at least filmed 100% with IMAX cameras.”

The teaser trailer can currently be seen in theaters, but it hasn’t made its way online just yet. Few films garner as much hype as the latest Christopher Nolan release, and according to Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Cherry, Uncharted), the filmmaker’s next opus, The Odyssey, is no exception. Speaking to Variety about his Odyssey experience, Holland praised the ensemble cast, elaborate sets, and the director’s impeccable attention to detail.

“It was amazing. The job of a lifetime, without a doubt. The best experience I’ve had on a film set,” Holland said when asked about his experience on The Odyssey set. “Incredible. It was exciting. It was different. And I think the movie is going to be unlike anything we’ve ever seen.”

Holland, who in the past was known for having loose lips about Marvel projects, loves to talk a big game. Still, who could blame him? The mere thought of Christopher Nolan adapting Homer’s epic poem is almost too awesome to comprehend.

“Working with Chris, getting to know him and Emma [Thomas] was absolutely fantastic. I’ve never seen someone that can work the way that they do, and there is a reason why they’re the best in the business for sure,” Holland continued. “To get a front row seat to that and to be a part of the process and to collaborate with a true master of his craft and learn from him was the best experience I’ve ever had.”

Shortly before stepping in front of cameras for Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey, Shōgun star Cosmo Jarvis will exit the ambitious and star-studded project. According to Deadline, Jarvis must leave the production due to scheduling conflicts, with Logan Marshall-Green (Upgrade, Intrusion, Lou) stepping in as his replacement.

Logan Marshall-Green recently wrapped production for Eif Rivera’s Killing Castro. The story takes place in 1960, when Fidel Castro comes to America to speak at the UN. Malcolm X invites him to stay in Harlem at the famous Hotel Theresa. Unsure of his intentions, the FBI, CIA, and the Mafia attempt to eliminate him by any means necessary. Marshall-Green stars in the film alongside Al Pacino, Kiki Layne, Alexander Ludwig, Titus Welliver, Ron Livingston, Xolo Maridueña, Frankie Faison, and more.

Marshall-Green also toplines the upcoming action thriller Titan. In Titan, a team of doctors embarks on a local mission in the Amazon rainforest, but it soon becomes clear that not everybody or everything is happy to see them. Their sudden appearance draws the attention of an animal predator, the “Boiúna”. Mike P. Nelson directs Titan, with Jessica Roth and Kiana Madeira co-starring.

Like any other Christopher Nolan film, the cast is positively stacked with many of Hollywood’s heaviest hitters, including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Jon Bernthal, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Zendaya, Mia Goth, Elliot Page, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, John Leguizamo, Will Yun Lee, Benny Safdie, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin, Corey Hawkins, Nick E. We still have more than a year until Christopher Nolan’s next film, The Odyssey, hits theaters worldwide. In the meantime, we’ve gotten some teases via looks at the set. But now officially promotional materials are starting to emerge, as the first poster for the film has been spotted in theaters and subsequently online. Are you ready to defy the gods?

As seen in the poster (embedded below), a decapitated sculpture sits at the bottom, embers and smoke around it. Above that, the tagline: Defy the Gods, with a typical Christopher Nolan boast that The Odyssey was “shot entirely with IMAX film cameras.” Admittedly, I’d say that tagline is a little lame but that’s all in the promotion so chances are Matt Damon doesn’t utter that halfway into the journey…

nolan odyssey 2

Filming on Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey began in February, with the brilliant Hoyte van Hoytema – who has lensed every Nolan film since 2014’s Interstellar, nabbing an Oscar for Oppenheimer – behind the camera. Production has bounced around quite a bit, with locations including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Iceland, and more. That all of this was done solely on IMAX film cameras is all the more impressive, as those machines are humongous and heavy. No doubt the extensive usage for the $250 million film will be of much discussion as promotion starts to ramp up, especially considering it was one of the requirements Nolan had. As IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond recalled, Nolan told him, “‘I’m going to give you a challenge. If you can figure out how to solve these problems, I’m going to make Odyssey 100% film with film with IMAX cameras’, and we’ve solved his problems. So, this will be the first film ever, at least filmed 100% with IMAX cameras.”

Christopher Nolan will reunite with Interstellar and Oppenheimer star Matt Damon for The Odyssey, with the star playing Odysseus on his perilous, epic journey to return home to his wife, Penelope (Anne Hathaway, The Dark Knights Rises and Interstellar). The stacked cast also features Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Mia Goth, and many more.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey heads to theaters on July 17th, 2026.

Christopher Nolan certainly has the “go big or go home” mentality. When he pioneered the usage of IMAX cameras on Hollywood movies when they were primarily used for nature documentaries, Nolan has never truly looked back. Even with movies like Oppenheimer, which was more of a talky character drama, he utilized the technology as fully as he could. After Oppenheimer became a massive success, Nolan challenged IMAX boss Rich Gelfond. Gelfond explained, “A year before Chris started filming The Odysseyhe called me and said he wanted to make a whole film shot with IMAX cameras.”

According to Deadline, Gelfond added, “That couldn’t be done for a lot of reasons. There were lots of issues.” IMAX cameras are famously bulky and noisy since they are shooting on the highest-grade film available. But Nolan would persist as Gelfond expounded that Nolan said to him, “‘I’m going to give you a challenge. If you can figure out how to solve these problems, I’m going to make Odyssey 100% film with film with IMAX cameras’, and we’ve solved his problems. So, this will be the first film ever, at least filmed 100% with IMAX cameras.”

Gelfond stated at a Cannes lunch presser, “Chris forced us to rethink how we operated our film side of our business in different ways, so we have a program now to train new projectionists, and we’re putting more parts around the world, and we’re working harder at developing spare parts, and we’re looking at ancillary things like film recorders and film scanners. You know, it’s not just a camera thing. It kind of was a challenge to look at our business in a different way. And I’m glad he gave us that challenge.”

When Universal Pictures officially announced the project last year, the studio described it as “a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology.” Production is well into its schedule and some reports state that this could be Nolan’s most expensive film to date. It’s expected to cost $250 million but could very easily go higher. Nolan even filmed part of the film on Favignana, Sicily’s “Goat Island,” which is “believed to be the place where Homer envisioned Odysseus landed with his motley crew to barbecue goats and stock up on food. The idyllic isle is part of the Egadi archipelago off of Sicily’s north-west coast.”

Production for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is in full swing, and the camera-happy vultures are circling for any chance of snapping a photo of the cast and crew in action. We’ve seen Matt Damon dressed in armor with an intimidating helmet, and today, we’ve got the latest looks at Tom Holland and Zendaya navigating the set of The Odyssey.

In the images posted online featuring Zendaya, the Challengers and Euphoria actress is wearing a simple yet elegant cream-colored dress. As she navigates the set’s tricky terrain, we see her smiling and laughing alongside Nolan and his talented team of production staff. While audiences could expect her outfit to be elaborate, I’m partial to the dress’s simplistic presentation. She wears it well.

As for Tom Holland, we’ve seen him alongside Jon Bernthal in previous photos. However, today, we see him looking at what I can only guess is a ship with taught ropes and wooden bitts. Again, Holland’s armor is minimalistic in design, though if you slap some stylish filters and cinematography on it, you could end up with something visually striking.

Homer’s The Odyssey, and by the same token, Nolan’s highly-anticipated film follows Odysseus in his perilous journey home after the Trojan War, showcasing his encounters with Polyphemus, the Sirens, Circe, and finishing with his reunion with his wife, Penelope.

Like any other Christopher Nolan film, the cast is positively stacked with many of Hollywood’s heaviest hitters, including Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Jon Bernthal, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Zendaya, Mia Goth, Elliot Page, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, John Leguizamo, Will Yun Lee, Benny Safdie, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin, Corey Hawkins, Nick E. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey plans to shoot globally using new IMAX technology, a prospect with cinephiles salivating. Nolan, of course, is one of the biggest proponents of the IMAX film format. He’s known to push the limits of what IMAX can capture on screens, pairing superior visual presentation with dynamic audio design that leaves general theater sound systems in the dust.

Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, The Odyssey

There’s something heartwarming about the enduring friendship between Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. The pair started out together, and they still seem to be as close as ever. While speaking with GQ, Affleck explained how their careers began to take different paths when Damon started picking his projects based on the director.

Matt learned and knew earlier than I did to really key in on the director as the fundamental basis on which he’s going to make a decision whether to do a movie or not, which was a very wise choice,” Affleck said. “And also he has certainly had opportunities to do movies that like—it’s not like I was saying, ‘No, Scorsese, no, Spielberg, I’m not going to be in your movie.’ We’re in situations of our opportunities, and we’re subject to that.

Affleck continued, “I would’ve taken Saving Private Ryan. If Martin Scorsese called me and told me to play a waiter, I would take it. Steven Spielberg is one of the great filmmaking architects to ever live. I feel that way about Chris Nolan. I may go visit Matt on the set just to watch Nolan direct. I’m not even kidding at all.The Odyssey tells the tale of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his journey home after the ten-year Trojan War. The trip was filled with peril, including encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the witch-goddess Circe. At home, Odysseus is presumed dead, and his wife Penelope and son Telemachus must contend with groups of unruly suitors who each want Penelope’s hand in marriage to control the kingdom.

Affleck will next be seen starring in The Accountant 2. The long-belated sequel has been received surprisingly well, and our own Chris Bumbray dug the film after watching it at SXSW. “The Accountant 2 works terrifically well as a slam-bang buddy action comedy, with Affleck and Bernthal at their absolute best,” Bumbray wrote. “I love the sleek 87North-style action flicks that are in favour now, but The Accountant 2 is old-school in a way I’ve been missing. The extra emphasis on characterization only sweetens the pot. Bring on The Accountant 3!” You can check out the rest of his review right here.

Speaking of The Accountant 3, O’Connor does have another potential sequel in mind. “I have a lot of thoughts about what to do with the third,” O’Connor said. “I’ve been thinking about it for a lot of years.

The official synopsis for The Accountant 2 reads: “When her former boss is killed by unknown assassins, Treasury Agent Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) is forced to contact Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) to solve the murder. With the help of his estranged but highly lethal brother Brax (Jon Bernthal), Chris applies his brilliant mind and less-than-legal methods to piece together the unsolved puzzle. As they get closer to the truth, the trio draw the attention of some of the most ruthless killers alive—all intent on putting a stop to their search. The Accountant 2 will be released in theaters on April 25th.

The Odyssey

A new behind-the-scenes look at Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic, The Odyssey, has made its way online courtesy of an Instagram post from Leonidas Christopoulos, who is the Chief Executive Officer at the Hellenic Film and Audiovisual Center in Greece. Christopoulos visited the set and took a number of pictures of his experience, including meeting with the cast — Jon Bernthal and Tom Holland — and director Christopher Nolan himself. You can get a peek at Bernthal and Holland’s characters below.

When translated to English, the post reads,
“Today, I had the honor of meeting Sir Christopher Nolan, a visionary director whose films inspire audiences around the world, as he brings Homer’s epic, The Odyssey, to life in our country.

It was a pleasure to chat with the great cast, including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, John Bernthal and Lupita Nyong’o, as well as Dame and producer Emma Thomas, along with the executives of Faliro House, the Greek production company that is assisting Universal in the realization of this ambitious project, Christos Konstantakopoulos and Kostas Kefalas, as well as the Regional Governor of Peloponnese, Mr. Dimitris Ptochos.

Visiting the magical locations of Pylos, Methoni Castle and Nestor’s Cave, where filming takes place, was truly an unforgettable experience.

As CEO of the Greek Center for Cinema, Audiovisual Media & Creativity – Creative Greece, I feel particularly honored that we actively support, as an institution and as the Ministry of Culture, this monumental production by financing 40% of all eligible expenses incurred in Greek territory. Greece has always been a land of myths and cinematic beauty and it is our mission to ensure that global productions continue to choose our country as their creative homeland.”

When Universal Pictures officially announced the project last year, the studio described it as “a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology.” Production is slated to kick off at the end of the month, and some reports state that this could be Nolan’s most expensive film to date. It’s expected to cost $250 million but could very easily go higher.

Nolan is never one to take the cheap route, and he will be filming all over the world for The Odyssey, including the actual locations where Odysseus was believed to have been. A recent report stated that Nolan will shoot part of the film on Favignana, Sicily’s “Goat Island,” which is “believed to be the place where Homer envisioned Odysseus landed with his motley crew to barbecue goats and stock up on food. The idyllic isle is part of the Egadi archipelago off of Sicily’s north-west coast.”

Spider-Man 4, release date, The Odyssey, Tom Holland

Next July is going to be a big month for Tom Holland. Not only will the actor be reprising the role of Peter Parker for Spider-Man 4, but he’ll also be starring alongside Matt Damon in Christoper Nolan’s The Odyssey. The two films were previously slated to hit theaters within a week of one another, but Sony Pictures has shifted the release date for Spider-Man 4, pushing the film back to July 31, 2026. That’s now two weeks after The Odyssey is due to hit theaters on July 17th.

That’s still mighty close, but it does provide a little more breathing room between the two movies. We don’t know much about Spider-Man 4 at this point, only that Holland will be returning and that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton will be taking the helm. In October, Holland said the script was coming along nicely. “The writers are doing a great job. I read it three weeks ago and it really lit a fire in me,” Holland said. “Zendaya and I sat down and read it together and we at times were bouncing around the living room like this is a real movie worthy of the fans’ respect.

As for The Odyssey, the film is now in production. It’s based on the epic poem by Homer, which tells the tale of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his journey home after the ten-year Trojan War.

Nolan has assembled quite the stacked cast for The Odyssey. In addition to Holland, the cast includes Matt Damon, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, Mia Goth, Corey Hawkins, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, and more. When Universal Pictures officially announced the project last year, the studio described it as “a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology.” Some reports have stated that this could be Nolan’s most expensive film to date, as it’s expected to cost upwards of $250 million.

Universal Pictures and Christopher Nolan are making this Monday mythological with a first look at Matt Damon as Odysseus for the filmmaker’s assuredly epic adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey. The image shared online shows Damon in the world-famous character’s battle armor. The side-angled shot gives us a peek at Damon’s salty beard, battle scars, and world-weary look.

Tarabay, and more.

Whenever Christopher Nolan starts a new production, you can bet that the cast will be absolutely stacked. Like, come on, save some actors for the rest of Hollywood! Per THR and Deadline, Mia Goth (MaxXxine) and Corey Hawkins (The Last Voyage of the Demeter) have joined the cast of The Odyssey.

As you might expect, there are no official details on who Goth or Hawkins may be playing in the film, but THR does note that Goth’s role “may not even involve speaking at all.” They say she could be playing a siren, one of those enchanting creatures whose song lures sailors to their deaths, or perhaps a goddess or even a statue. Hrm.

The embarrassment of riches which makes up the cast of The Odyssey includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin, and Samantha Morton.

As usual, Christopher Nolan is stacking his next project with an all-star cast, and the latest additions include a few Nolan alumni. It’s been announced that Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin, and Samantha Morton have joined The Odyssey, Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek poem.

Page played Ariadne in Inception, while Patel played Mahir in Tenet. Irwin is also a Nolan veteran, but you wouldn’t recognize his face. He voiced TARS in Interstellar and physically controlled the robot on-set. There’s no information on who these new additions will play in The Odyssey, but they join a cast that already includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, and John Leguizamo.

THR reports that Benny Safdie is set to reunite with Christopher Nolan for The Odyssey, the director’s epic adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek poem.

Safdie played theoretical physicist Edward Teller in Oppenheimer, and much like that film, he’ll be part of an all-star ensemble cast for The Odyssey that includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, and Jon Bernthal.

Benny Safdie will make his solo directorial debut with The Smashing Machine, a biopic about MMA fighter Mark Kerr starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. A24 will release it later this year. He’s also expected to appear in Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore 2, which will debut on Netflix later this year.

Christopher Nolan is known for his realism in movies and his passion for shooting practically whenever he can. The director of The Dark Knight trilogy has flipped a semi-truck longways, hung a plane vertically from another plane and even crashed a plane into a hanger for real when the logistics he calculated stated that it would actually be cheaper to do so instead of turning to CGI. And while there are some things that just can’t be done practically (like, say, filming an atomic blast for Oppenheimer), Nolan hasn’t lost his passion for being as truthful to his production as he possibly can. And let’s face it, he probably won’t have a shortage of money provided by the studio at his current status.

Variety is reporting that Nolan is set to film parts of his new epic, The Odyssey, in Sicily. According to scholars, Odysseus’ travels would land him there, as told by Homer’s epic around 8th century BCE. Most notably, in the coming months, Nolan is planning to film on Favignana, Sicily’s “Goat Island,” which is “believed to be the place where Homer envisioned Odysseus landed with his motley crew to barbecue goats and stock up on food. The idyllic isle is part of the Egadi archipelago off of Sicily’s north-west coast.” It was recently reported that The Odyssey will have a budget of $250 million, which will probably balloon with reshoots, marketing and any unexpected costs.

Jon Bernthal recently appeared in the first bone-breaking trailer for Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again. Bernthal returns in the highly anticipated series as Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, whose history with Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil (Charlie Cox), is… Well, let’s just say it’s complicated. In Daredevil: Born Again, Matt Murdock finds himself on a collision course with Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’onofrio) when their identities begin to emerge. For a while, it was uncertain if Bernthal’s Frank Castle would join the cast of Marvel’s new Daredevil series. Still, now that his participation is confirmed, expectations are through the roof regarding his character’s possible team-up with the Man Without Fear.

In addition to Daredevil: Born Again, Jon Bernthal stars in the upcoming action-thriller The Amateur. The film stars Rami Malek as a CIA cryptographer who manages to blackmail his agency into training him to let him go after a group of terrorists who killed his wife.

Are you excited about Jon Bernthal joining the cast of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey? Who could Bernthal play in the film? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Christopher Nolan, The Odyssey

Shatter your banks and collect the couch change, Universal, because the budget for Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey is shaping up to be his most expensive film ever. According to Matthew Belloni’s Puck newsletter report, Nolan’s upcoming epic could cost $250 million, similar to The Dark Knight’s $250-300 million budget. While $250 million is on par with Nolan’s second Batman film, that number could go higher as unexpected costs and marketing dollars come into play.

While many of us could only dream about that kind of cash, it reminds me that 2015’s Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens, cost a reported $440 million to produce. Imagine coughing up that amount of scratch for anything, let alone a new Star Wars film. Nolan’s supposed budget for The Odyssey doesn’t come close to the amount for The Force Awakens. Still, the project’s hefty price tag speaks volumes about Universal’s confidence in the filmmaker’s ability to deliver a box-office blockbuster.

The Odyssey is an ancient Greek poem by Homer that tells the tale of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his journey home after the ten-year Trojan War.

The Odyssey features an all-star cast that includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, and Zendaya. Could Damon play Odysseus? We’ll need to wait and see.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey plans to shoot around the globe using new IMAX technology, a prospect with cinephiles salivating. Nolan, of course, is one of the biggest proponents of the IMAX film format. He’s known to push the limits of what IMAX can capture on screens, pairing superior visual presentation with dynamic audio design that leaves general theater sound systems in the dust.

Are you at all surprised by the budget for The Odyssey? What do you think the final cost of the film will be? Let us know in the comments section below.

Although I doubt that Hugh Jackman will be hard up for work once he hangs up Wolverine's claws for the last time in WOLVERINE 3, it never hurts to have a potential franchise waiting in the wings. The Wrap reports that Hugh Jackman is in early talks to lead Francis Lawrence's adaptation of Homer's "The Odyssey" for Lionsgate. Set after the fall of Troy, "The Odyssey" follows Odysseus on his ten-year journey back to his home in Ithaca. Along the way his ship is blown off course and he and his crew must deal with all variety of gods and monsters.

Francis Lawrence, who has directed each film of Lionsgate's THE HUNGER GAMES franchise except for the first, was signed on to direct THE ODYSSEY in April which Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said could span multiple films. There's certainly more than enough material to build several films around if that's the direction Lionsgate is heading, and with a star like Hugh Jackman leading the charge, we could be looking at Lionsgate's next big franchise. A representative for Jackman confirmed the reports to The Wrap but said that the talks were merely conversation at this point and that nothing is confirmed.

Would Hugh Jackman be a good fit for Odysseus?

Hugh Jackman's next film also has the actor take to the seas, Joe Wright's PAN will be released on October 9, 2015. Jackman's final turn as Wolverine is still in the scripting stages but is scheduled for a March 3, 2017 release.

Last month we learned that Francis Lawrence would continue his working relationship with Lionsgate and THE HUNGER GAMES producer Nina Jacobson by helming an adaptation of The Odyssey by Homer. At that time, it was up in the air whether or not this adaptation would consist of a single film or be the start of a multi-film franchise; today we found out that it's definitely the latter.

Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer revealed today that the plan is to develop at least two movies from the material saying that "our deal with Francis contemplates more than one movie," while Motion Picture Group co-chairman Rob Friedman added that "we have high goals for this one, we’re feeling very, very bullish.Francis Lawrence will direct the film(s) from a screenplay by MOCKINGJAY writer Peter Craig.

With THE HUNGER GAMES franchise coming to a close this year, it seems as though Lionsgate is hungry to get a new franchise off the ground as soon as possible. Lionsgate has put this on a fast track with the plan is to begin production early next year, right after the filmmakers complete promotion of THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 2. The final installment of THE HUNGER GAMES franchise will hit theaters on November 20, 2015.

With THE HUNGER GAMES – MOCKINGJAY PART 2 set to premiere later this year, director Francis Lawrence is off to helm his next project. Since he directed three of the four HUNGER GAMES movies, Lawrence has fostered bonds with the producers and writers on the franchise which may be why they are reteaming to bring a new take on Homer’s The Odyssey to the big screen.

The Odyssey is one of the most lasting adventure stories in the history of literature and has yet never had a truly epic big screen adaptation. There have been films focused on aspects of the story (O BROTHER, WHERE ARE THOU? and BIG FISH come to mind) and characters (TROY, based on The Iliad), but the “sequel” tale has best been adapted as an NBC mini-series starring Armand Assante in the lead.

Lionsgate is fast-tracking THE ODYSSEY to begin production next year and Francis Lawrence is putting any other projects on hold to direct the film. HUNGER GAMES franchise producer Nina Jacobson will produce the film from a screenplay by MOCKINGJAY writer Peter Craig.

There is no word on whether this will be a single film or a multi-part series, but that could be the first sign that Lionsgate is not approaching this as a new franchise but rather a big budget adaptation of the timeless epic poem. If the movie is coming together quickly, I would expect casting announcements to be made by the end of the year which now begs the dream casting of who could play Odysseus. The great Sean Bean played the character in TROY, maybe he could return for the “seque”.
