Scream Factory and Shout Factory have announced their March batch of 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray releases, which include a 4K release of The Devil’s Advocate, the 1997 horror thriller starring Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino. It’s set to be released on March 10.

Special Features

Unfortunately, the film doesn’t include a robust helping of extras (at least for the moment), but the special features include:

  • 4K Transfer from the 35mm Original Camera Negative
  • Presented in Dolby Vision
  • Audio Commentary with Director Taylor Hackford
  • Audio Commentary with Taylor Hackford
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Theatrical Trailer
The Devil's Advocate, 4K release

What is The Devil’s Advocate About?

The Devil’s Advocate stars Reeves as a gifted young Florida lawyer who is invited to work for a major New York City law firm. As his wife (Charlize Theron) becomes haunted by frightening visions, the lawyer slowly realizes that the firm’s owner, John Milton (Pacino), is the Devil. The rest of the cast includes Connie Nielsen, Craig T. Nelson, Jeffrey Jones, Judith Ivey, and Heather Matarazzo.

We Have Keanu Reeves to Thank for Al Pacino Playing the Devil

The Devil’s Advocate received mixed reviews upon its release, but it’s hard not to admire a film that lets Al Pacino go completely full-throttle as the Prince of Darkness. That said, the iconic actor initially wanted nothing to do with the project, turning it down three separate times. Pacino even suggested that Robert Redford or Sean Connery might be better suited for the role, but the studio had its heart set on him.

A rewrite was commissioned to make the material more appealing, and Pacino eventually signed on—only for the production to realize it couldn’t afford him. Enter Keanu Reeves, who was so eager to work with Pacino that he reportedly took a multi-million-dollar pay cut to make it happen. For that sacrifice, cinephiles everywhere owe him a sincere thank you.

A Lawsuit Delayed the Home Video Release

Before it could even reach home video, the film became entangled in a lawsuit. The massive wall sculpture featured in Milton’s apartment was deemed to closely resemble Ex Nihilo, a work by sculptor Frederick Hart. A federal judge ruled that the film’s video release would be blocked until the case went to trial, unless a settlement was reached. Ultimately, Warner Bros. agreed to edit the scene in future releases and affix warning stickers to unedited videotapes clarifying that the artwork in the film was not related to Hart’s sculpture.

Will you be adding The Devil’s Advocate to your 4K collection?

Speed Racer May Finally Be Getting a 4K Release

Good news to kick off the New Year: Speed Racer, the 2008 live-action adaptation of the classic Japanese animated TV series, appears to be heading for a long-awaited 4K Ultra HD reissue.

Originally released to disappointing box-office results—$93 million worldwide against a reported $120 million budget—the film was widely viewed as a misfire from the Wachowskis following their The Matrix Trilogy. Despite the setback, Speed Racer has since grown into a bona fide cult favorite.

Why Speed Racer Failed at the Box Office (But Found New Life Later)

At the time of release, Speed Racer featured a then-hot ensemble cast, including:

  • Emile Hirsch
  • Christina Ricci
  • Matthew Fox (riding high from Lost)
  • Rain
  • John Goodman
  • Susan Sarandon

While audiences were initially lukewarm, the film’s hyper-stylized visuals and faithful anime sensibility found appreciation over time—especially when Speed Racer became one of the earliest Blu-ray releases, where its visual design truly popped.

Why Hasn’t Speed Racer Been Released on 4K Before?

The main obstacle has always been technical.

  • Speed Racer was shot digitally.
  • Its digital intermediate (DI) was completed at 1080p, not 4K.
  • Upscaling to true 4K requires careful reconstruction and supervision.

This issue isn’t unique. Throughout the 2000s, 1080p was the industry standard for digital filmmaking, affecting many high-profile titles.

Other Movies With the Same 1080p Limitation

Several notable films were finished in 1080p, including:

  • Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (remastered later in 4K)
  • Sin City
  • Films by Michael Mann, such as:

Warner Bros. faces a similar challenge with Superman Returns, directed by Bryan Singer, which remains unreleased on 4K for the same reason.

What’s the Latest on the 4K Reissue?

According to The Digital Bits, Warner Bros. is actively working on a 4K remaster, with the Wachowskis involved in some capacity. If accurate, this suggests a carefully supervised upgrade rather than a quick upscale—exactly what fans have been hoping for.

When Will Speed Racer Be Released on 4K?

No official street date has been announced, but 2026 is shaping up to be the year Speed Racer finally gets the premium release its fans have been waiting for.

Will you be picking up Speed Racer on 4K Ultra HD when it drops?
Sound off in the comments below.

Warner Bros. Physical Media

While we stand on the cusp of the transition of Warner Bros.’ management as the Hollywood legacy studio will soon be under the control of Netflix, there may be a mad dash of sorts to get all their past physical media titles. Luckily, for years, Warner Bros. has also regularly licensed its catalog to boutique labels like Criterion, Arrow Video, and Shout! Factory, ensuring a wide range of titles are available, with some getting a luxury treatment they may not have received otherwise. What will happen to the library once it’s placed under Netflix? Well, good news for collectors and TV fans! Some truly obscure titles may see the light of day in glorious 4K.

Iconoscope is born

News has been revealed on the official subreddit page for the boutique label Vinegar Syndrome. An email has apparently been sent out, which announces the formation of Iconoscope. Iconoscope is a new sub-label of Vinegar Syndrome that will be utilizing new licensing deals with Warner Bros., and there are already 40 titles under the new distributor. The first title set to be released will be the 1973 horror film Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, which was remade with Guillermo del Toro as a writer and producer.

According to the post, the announcement reads,
“The latest member of our Sub-Label family has arrived with Iconoscope, a new brand produced by VS master scanning technician and restoration artist Brandon Upson, and focused entirely on TV. That’s TV movies, series, miniseries, and…who knows what the future will bring!

Kicking off the brand is the UHD debut of the 1973 made-for-TV chiller DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK, which makes its 4K debut from a brand new restoration of its original negative. Whether you remember it giving you the creeps as a kid or caught it on video, this beloved telefilm has never looked better. 2026 Subscribers can purchase this and all other 2026 Iconoscope releases at 50% off SRP. Remember to sign up for your Subscription first so the discounts take effect immediately and you don’t risk overpaying.

Plus, DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK marks the first in a nearly 40-title distribution license we’ve recently signed with Warner Bros! Not only will this bring plenty more made-for-TV classics and rarities to Blu-ray and 4K UHD, but get ready for an incredible assortment of horror, thrillers, action, arthouse, and other oddities from the Warner vaults, including numerous 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and even disc debuts.”

The post has additionally revealed new merchandise for the brand with a new Iconoscope T-shirt that’s available for purchase HERE.

The post What’s coming up in Warner Bros’ 4K Blu-ray release slate? appeared first on JoBlo.

]]>
After all the drama surrounding the buying of Warner Bros. and their Hollywood legacy of titles, no matter who gets the final purchase, it’s probably a good time to gather up all the physical media of their movies while you can. That is, if the discs don’t crap out on you and the studio fulfills their promise of replacing the defective discs. So, while the bleak future of the company is still going through a takeover situation, in the immediate future, some of the studio’s titles are likely on their way to seeing a new ultra-high-definition remaster.

Which titles are said to be on the new 4K slate?

Thanks to some detective work on TheDigitalBits, they’ve been able to decipher what WB may be releasing in the new year of 2026. According to the site, Warner Bros.’ Korean distributor has been teasing the next year’s titles over social media, and they’ve been able to more or less confirm through their independent sources. The list is said to include,

  • William Wyler’s Ben-Hur (1959) – already listed for pre-order, TBA Q1
  • Alan J. Pakula’s All the President’s Men (1976) – already listed for pre-order, TBA Q1
  • Chuck Russell’s Eraser (1996)
  • Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity (2013)
  • Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks! (1996)
  • Neil Jordan’s Interview with the Vampire (1994)
  • Victor Fleming’s Gone with the Wind (1939)
  • P. T. Anderson’s Magnolia (1999)

Snatch them up while you can

While these titles have been confirmed by the site, they aren’t expected to be the only ones to be released in 2026. More are likely to be announced for release, and while the studio is going through its very public and very scary transitional period, the purchase of WB isn’t likely to impact the release of these movies or any of the upcoming ones that are set to be announced in the next few months.

Apparently, Warners has been working on releasing a 4K version of the technical marvel, Gravity, for some time now, but they needed to have director Alfonso Cuarón approve the HDR transfer of the picture and it presumably has finally happened. The only other titles that have been said to be in the works for some time are Mars Attacks!Gone with the Wind and Magnolia.

In 1979, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre director Tobe Hooper made a two-part mini-series adaptation of the Stephen King novel Salem’s Lot – and CBS viewers who tuned in to watch that adaptation on November 17 and 24, 1979 were deeply creeped out by some of the vampire scenes Hooper brought to the screen. Those moments have continued creeping out horror fans for decades now – and while other adaptations of Salem’s Lot have come and gone, none of have managed to live up to Hooper’s version. As of the end of March, fans will have the chance to watch Tobe Hooper’s Salem’s Lot in 4K, as Arrow Video has announced that they’re giving it a 4K UHD release on March 30th in the UK and the 31st in the US and Canada.

Synopsis

From Tobe Hooper, director of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Poltergeist, comes the mini-series that scarred a generation. Based on Stephen King’s all-time classic of small town terror, welcome to Salem’s Lot. Population two-thousand and thirteen, but falling fast! Author Ben Mears (David Soul) returns to the town of Salem’s Lot after 25 years to write about the Marsten House, an old mansion with a bad reputation that has haunted the writer since childhood. But the sleepy town of Ben’s youth is beginning to change. There’s an antiques store about to open, run by the mysterious Richard Straker (James Mason) and his unseen partner Mr. Barlow (Reggie Nalder), and they’re living in the Marsten House. A series of deaths and disappearances leads Ben to believe that a vampire is feeding on the town. But how can he stop them, and will anyone believe him?

With a script by Paul Monash (producer of De Palma’s Carrie, writer of Peyton Place and The Friends of Eddie Coyle) and a superb cast that includes Bonnie Bedelia (Die Hard), Fred Willard (Best in Show), Geoffrey Lewis (Every Which Way But Loose) and Elisha Cook Jr. (The Killing), Tobe Hooper breathes vivid life and chilling un-death into the characters of King’s novel. The children of the night await… in Salem’s Lot.

The HBO and HBO Max TV series It: Welcome to Derry, which serves as a prequel to Warner Bros’ two-part adaptation of the classic Stephen King novel It (pick up a copy HERE), just wrapped up its first season run – but if you don’t have HBO or if you have been hoping to add the show to your physical media collection, we have some good news to share today: It: Welcome to Derry season 1 will be receiving a 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD release on May 5th! Amazon is already accepting pre-orders at THIS LINK, but the 4K is, as of this writing, temporarily out of stock.

JoBlo’s own Alex Maidy gave It: Welcome to Derry an 8/10 review that you can read at THIS LINK.

Creative Team

Brad Caleb Kane (Tokyo Vice) and Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman), who was a co-producer on It: Chapter Two, are the showrunners on It: Welcome to Derry (and Kane recently signed on to be showrunner on the Friday the 13th series Crystal Lake as well.) The show is being executive produced by Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti, the sibling director/producer duo that was behind the two It movies, through their production company Double Dream. Kane and Fuchs are also executive producing, as are Shelley Meals, Roy Lee, and Dan Lin. The series is produced by HBO Max and Warner Bros. Television.

Fuchs wrote the script for the first episode, working from a story he crafted with the Muschiettis. Andy Muschietti has directed four episodes of the nine-episode series.

Stephen King had this to say about the series when it was first announced: “I’m excited that the story of Derry, Maine’s most haunted city, is continuing, and I’m glad Andy Muschietti is going to be overseeing the frightening festivities, along with a brain trust including his talented sister, Barbara. Red balloons all around!“ The Muschiettis added, “As teenagers, we took turns reading chapters of Stephen King’s It until the thick paperback fell to pieces. It is an epic story that contains multitudes, far beyond what we could explore in our It movies. We can’t wait to share the depths of Steve’s novel, in all its heart, humor, humanity, and horror.

Cast

The cast of Welcome to Derry includes Taylour Paige (Zola), Jovan Adepo (Watchmen), Chris Chalk (Perry Mason), James Remar (Dexter), Madeleine Stowe (Revenge), Stephen Rider (Daredevil), Alixandra Fuchs (Hatfields & McCoys), Kimberly Guerrero (The English), Dorian Grey (Star Trek: Discovery), Thomas Mitchell (Gangland Undercover), BJ Harrison (Family Law), Peter Outerbridge (Saw VI), Shane Marriott (Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent), Chad Rook (Billy the Kid), Joshua Odjick (Little Bird), Rudy Mancuso (Música), and Morningstar Angeline (Westworld). Bill Skarsgård reprises the role of Pennywise.

We have heard that the plan is for the show to last three seasons, which each one going further into the past. The first season is set in 1962, the second season will be set in 1935, and the third season in 1908. Warner Bros. is reportedly happy with the first season and wants to start production on season 2 as soon as possible.

Are you glad to hear that It: Welcome to Derry season 1 is coming to 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD in May? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

At long last, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon will finally get a physical media release courtesy of Criterion. The film has been available to stream on Apple TV for the past few years, but the streaming service has not seemed keen on giving it a physical release. Some reports even claimed that Apple previously refused multiple offers from Criterion to release the film, but thankfully, fans will be able to keep their Scorsese collections complete.

When Will Criterion Release Killers of the Flower Moon?

Killers of the Flower Moon will be released on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD by Criterion on March 24, 2026. I’m grateful Criterion has come to the rescue, as it would be a damn shame to have one of Scorsese’s films stuck on streaming forever.

Killers of the Flower Moon, Criterion Collection Cover

What Special Features Will be Included?

  • New 4K digital master, approved by director Martin Scorsese, with Dolby Atmos soundtrack
  • One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in Dolby Vision HDR and two Blu-rays with the film and special features
  • New documentary featuring Scorsese, actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone, author David Grann, Osage Nation Principal Chief Geoffrey Standing Bear, Osage cultural consultant John Williams, editor Thelma Schoonmaker, and other members of the cast and crew
  • “WahZhaZhe”: A Song for the Osage, a new documentary illuminating the film’s final shot, featuring Scorsese, Chief Standing Bear, and six members of the Osage Nation
  • Excerpted archival interview with director of photography Rodrigo Prieto
  • Excerpts from the 2023 Cannes Film Festival press conference featuring Scorsese, DiCaprio, Gladstone, Chief Standing Bear, and actor Robert De Niro
  • Short program on Noah Kemohah’s cover art
  • Trailer
  • English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing and English descriptive audio
  • PLUS: Essays by critic Vinson Cunningham and film programmer Adam Piron

What is Killers of the Flower Moon About?

Based on David Grann’s best-selling crime thriller, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon tells the real-life mystery of the Osage Indian nation in Oklahoma in the 1920s, who became wealthy after oil was discovered beneath their land. Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off, and the ensuing spiral of conspiracy, greed and murder got so bad that the FBI had to step in.

Jodie Foster Thought It Should Have been an Eight-hour Limited Series

Some criticized Killers of the Flower Moon as being too long, but Jodie Foster thought it could have been even longer, specifically, it could have been an eight-hour limited series. “This is the beauty of having limited series,” Foster said. “You can expand on a story. I was thinking of ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ — extraordinary movie, three-and-a-half hours long. And I thought, ‘I wonder why they didn’t do it eight hours long’ — to be able to explore all these other people, and give them another perspective. The great thing about limited series is you can have that novelistic idea of going off into tangents and tying them together.

Will you be adding Killers of the Flower Moon to your Criterion collection once it’s released?

Three years have gone by since Paramount Pictures brought Friday the 13th franchise fans a special treat by giving the original, 1980 classic Friday the 13th a 4K UHD release… and ever since, fans have been waiting patiently for the sequels to get the same treatment. Last year, a 4K UHD release of Friday the 13th Part 2 was included in the Paramount Scares: Volume 2 box set (which also included 4K releases of Breakdown, Orphan: First Kill, and World War Z) – but if you’ve been waiting for a solo release, you don’t have to wait much longer. Friday the 13th Part 2 is getting a solo 4K UHD release on February 3, just in time for the film’s 45th anniversary!

Copes of this release are available for pre-order on Amazon.

Cast and Synopsis

Directed by Steve Miner from a screenplay by Ron Kurz, Friday the 13th Part 2 has the following synopsis (taken from the back of the VHS box): Just when you thought it was safe to go back to camp… here’s even more heart-pounding terror. Five years after the horrible bloodbath at Camp Crystal Lake, all that remains is the legend of Jason Voorhees and his demented mother, who had murdered seven camp counselors. At a nearby summer camp, the new counselors are unconcerned about the warnings to stay away from the infamous site. Carefree, the young people roam the area, not sensing the ominous lurking presence. One by one, they are attacked and brutally slaughtered. Suspense and screams abound in this compelling chiller.

The film stars Amy Steel, John Furey, Stu Charno, Lauren-Marie Taylor, Marta Kober, Tom McBride, Bill Randolph, Kirsten Baker, Russell Todd, Walt Gorney, Jack Marks, Cliff Cudney, Adrienne King, Warrington Gillette, and Steve Dash, with a cameo by Betsy Palmer.

Special Features

Friday the 13th Part 2 comes to 4K UHD with the following special features, which will be familiar to fans who have bought previous editions of these movies:

Lost Tales from Camp Blood – Part II
Inside Crystal Lake Memories
Friday’s Legacy: Horror Conventions
Jason Forever

Delirium magazine, which is published by Charles Band and Full Moon, specializes in cult, horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and exploitation films – and now, the creative team behind the magazine has announced that they’re launching Delirium Home Video, a label that’s designed to bring some of the silver screen’s strangest and sexiest cinema to your collection! The releases are being carefully curated by Delirium editor-in-chief Chris Alexander, and the plan is for this label’s unique library to “explore both hard and softcore erotica, bizarre and bloody European exploitation fare, operatic international horror, obscure dark fantasy and much, much more!” Each release will be presented in HD and packed with all-new special features, and it all begins with a Blu-ray release of notorious exploitation filmmaker Jess Franco‘s 1976 film Doriana Gray!

Doriana Gray is a surreal, sexually explicit riff on the famous Oscar Wilde story, featuring Franco’s main muse, the gorgeous Lina Romay (Rolls Royce Baby), in one of her most powerful and raw performances. Romay stars as vampiric aristocrat Doriana Gray, a fluid-drinking succubus who shares a strange bond with her sexually voracious twin sister. It seems that when one woman feels aroused, the other sibling experiences every sensation, a phenomenon that is illustrated in shocking, salacious detail when a sexy young reporter comes to call…

Delirium Home Video brings Doriana Gray to Blu-ray for the first time in North America. It’s available as a standard release with double-sided wrap or with a limited edition hardback sleeve (only 100 available) featuring art by Spanish painter Suspiria Vilchez. Special features on this release include

Soft Cut of the film in German with English subtitles

Commentary by author and film historian Troy Howarth

Interviews with director Jess Franco, producer Erwin C. Dietrich and star Lina Romay

Erwin C. Dietrich Trailer

Delirium Home Video is part of the OCN/Vinegar Syndrome/Mélusine family of home video labels. They’re planning two releases for February, then a new title will be released every month thereafter. Their releases will be distributed by OCN, but quantities of titles will also be available through the DHV website.

Chris Alexander provided the following statement: “When the concept to create Delirium Home Video first took shape, I knew that the best possible people to partner with were our friends at OCN/Vinegar Syndrome. OCN/VS has been breaking ground by nurturing new partner labels that stay true to their central mission statement, that of digging up rare and wild international horror, cult, sexploitation and exploitation cinema and ensuring they meet a standard of excellence that titles of this nature normally would not get anywhere else. And with that, I think fans are going to be very impressed by the quality of each and every release. Not just the stunning, rare, salacious and shocking movies we have picked to be part of this line, but the gorgeous packaging, the supplemental material, the original and newly commissioned art… all of it. Delirium magazine has always focused on the eccentric, the erotic, the strange and the beautiful aspects of the genre and Delirium Home Video is simply an extension of that. Expect great things in the year to come!

Will you be keeping track of Delirium Home Video releases, and will you be adding the Doriana Gray Blu-ray to your collection? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Prepare yourselves for one hell of a great ride because Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc is finally hitting digital platforms this week! If you missed this outstanding anime in theaters, now is your chance to catch one of the year’s greatest animated films when Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc arrives on digital platforms tomorrow, December 9.

What is Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc about?

Are you unfamiliar with Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc? Here’s a crash course:

For the first time, Chainsaw Man slashes his way onto the big screen in an epic, action-fueled adventure that continues the hugely popular anime series. Denji worked as a Devil Hunter for the yakuza, trying to pay off the debt he inherited from his parents, until the yakuza betrayed him and had him killed. As he was losing consciousness, Denji’s beloved chainsaw-powered devil-dog, Pochita, made a deal with Denji and saved his life. This fused the two together, creating the unstoppable Chainsaw Man. Now, in a brutal war between devils, hunters, and secret enemies, a mysterious girl named Reze has stepped into his world, and Denji faces his deadliest battle yet, fueled by love in a world where survival knows no rules.

Tatsuya Yoshihara directs Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, based on the original story “Chainsaw Man” by Tatsuki Fujimoto (Serialized in Shueisha’s “Shonen Jump+”), with a screenplay by Hiroshi Seko, and production by MAPPA.

What did we think about Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc?

I saw Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc with a riled-up crowd in Toronto in October, and it was one of the best theater-going experiences I’ve ever had. While some could tap out on Reze Arc’s sleepy and sultry intro, they’d be fools not to wait for the film to go off like a bomb during its second and third acts.

In my review of the film, I wrote, “I genuinely can’t wait for more people to see this movie, especially the fans. I adore the film’s slow burn toward calamity, and it’s one of the best series-to-film adaptations I’ve ever seen, for reasons I refuse to spoil. The mind-blowing action, coupled with the film’s eye-popping visuals, surprising emotional depth, and rip-roaring soundtrack, makes it an unforgettable and unmissable title for anime fans. I implore you, see this movie in theaters. You won’t regret it.”

Be sure to catch Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc when it hits your favorite digital platforms tomorrow, December 9.

Cinephiles, prepare to dig your heels into something new that could satisfy your desire for indie filmmaking. According to reports, Letterboxd, the popular social platform and cataloging service for movie lovers to track, review, rate, and discover films, is launching an online film rental program on Wednesday, December 10, with a special focus on indie films. Letterboxd plans to launch its Letterboxd Video Store in 23 countries, boasting it’s “the next evolution of the platform’s core mission of film discovery.”

How much will the Letterboxd Video Store cost?

When the Letterboxd Video Store launches on December 10, the platform will feature nine films, including several exclusive titles, across two curated shelves: Unreleased Gems and Lost & Found. Films on offer span nine countries, with additional selections expected to arrive before the end of 2025. Pricing and availability vary by film and by country, with many titles exclusive to Letterboxd in the regions where they are shown. Pricing will vary but remain standard for video-on-demand releases in each territory. In the U.S., films found on the Letterboxd Video Store will cost $3.99 to $19.99 to rent. Customers will have 48 hours to watch the title once you hit Play.

How does Letterboxd know what you want to watch?

To enhance the experience, the Letterboxd Video Store features curated “shelves” programmed by the Letterboxd team, utilizing millions of users’ watchlists, reviews, and behavioral signals to inform their selections. To ensure quality over quantity, each film “has been selected based on genuine member demand, while leaving room for discoveries the community has yet to find.”

According to Letterboxd, titles found in the “Unreleased Gems” category focus on films that haven’t been released in the specific countries where Letterboxd Video Store makes them available. Meanwhile, the “Lost & Found” section brings “underseen underdogs with stellar community ratings” to the table.

Letterboxd CEO Matthew Buchanan on the value of its new platform

“We’re incredibly proud of what we and our community have built,” Letterboxd CEO and co-founder Matthew Buchanan said in a statement. “We take their lead, and believe that has been integral to Letterboxd’s success. They tell us what’s really happening — a 1980s action film suddenly trending, a festival title from two years ago still being added to watchlists. Video Store lets us act on that real demand, whether it’s helping a distributor unlock value from a forgotten gem in its vault or giving a filmmaker direct access to the audience they’ve been building on our platform.”

Buchanan added: “It’s our way of saying to the industry: Let’s harness this interest to get films to the people who want them most.”

The Letterboxd Video Store will launch in the following countries: U.S., Canada, U.K., Ireland, France, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Austria, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Belgium, Switzerland, Greece, and Cyprus.

What’s coming to the Letterboxd Video Store at launch?

You’ll find a list of films coming to the Letterboxd Video Store at launch below:

UNRELEASED GEMS

It Ends (2025): Director Alexander Ullom’s directorial debut about recent college grads trapped on an infinite, nightmarish backroad made waves when it premiered at SXSW 2025, going on to win best first feature at Fantasia International Film Festival and the narrative feature grand jury award at the Atlanta Film Festival.

Sore: A Wife From the Future (2025) – Director Yandy Laurens’ inventive time-loop sci-fi romance about a woman who travels back in time to change her husband’s destiny received eight nominations at the 2025 Indonesian Film Festival, including best picture, and has been selected as Indonesia’s submission for the best international feature film for the 2026 Academy Awards.

Kennedy (2023) – Anurag Kashyap’s neo-noir thriller following a presumed-dead insomniac ex-cop seeking redemption in Mumbai’s dark streets premiered at Cannes in 2023, going on to screen at over 20 international festivals.

The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo (2025) – Director Diego Céspedes’ feature debut about an eleven-year-old girl protecting her town’s queer community from superstitious panic won the Un Certain Regard Prize at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and has been selected as Chile’s submission for the best international feature film for the upcoming Academy Awards.

LOST & FOUND

Tiger on the Beat (1988) – Legendary 1988 action-comedy starring Chow Yun-Fat and directed by Lau Kar-Leung remains a beloved classic of Hong Kong cinema. For most of the world, this is the first opportunity to see the new 4K restoration — a digital exclusive to Letterboxd at launch.

Kisapmata (1981) – Considered one of the greatest Filipino films of all time, Mike de Leon’s masterpiece about a young woman living under her domineering father’s suffocating control won ten awards at the 1981 Metro Manila Film Festival including best film and screened at Cannes. This new 4K restoration premieres digitally, celebrating the late director’s uncompromising vision that faced censorship under the Marcos regime.

It Must Be Heaven (2019) – This comedy won both the special mention from the main competition jury and FIPRESCI Prize at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, but its theatrical release was delayed for over a year due to the pandemic, limiting its reach despite widespread praise. Palestinian director Elia Suleiman’s distinctive visual satire continues his acclaimed tradition of observational comedy that speaks to universal themes of displacement and belonging.

Poison (1991) – Todd Haynes’ groundbreaking film won the grand jury prize at the 1991 Sundance Film Festival and became a lightning rod in the culture wars, with conservative politicians attempting to defund the NEA over its support. The first feature from future Oscar nominee Haynes established him as a fearless voice in independent cinema.

Before We Vanish (2017) – Based on a cult Japanese stage play, master filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s alien invasion story screened in Un Certain Regard at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, showcasing the acclaimed director’s distinctive take on the genre.

A Better Tomorrow: John Woo’s first classic gets its due in Shout’s 4K set of the trilogy https://www.joblo.com/a-better-tomorrow-trilogy/ https://www.joblo.com/a-better-tomorrow-trilogy/#respond Thu, 04 Dec 2025 14:57:23 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=874832 Fans of John Woo and Chow Yun Fat should consider Shout Factory's 4K set of the trilogy a must-buy.

The post A Better Tomorrow: John Woo’s first classic gets its due in Shout’s 4K set of the trilogy appeared first on JoBlo.

Chris

We’ve been posting loads of stories here on JoBlo about Shout Factory’s Hong Kong Cinema Classics line, which features 4K restorations of gems from the Golden Princess catalogue. These movies have long been out of print in North America because The Weinstein Company owned the rights to many of them and, as was their custom, kept everything on the shelf. Some of the key titles included John Woo’s entire Hong Kong output, including The Killer and Hard-Boiled.

Where You Can Watch the Restorations

One of the cool things about Shout is that they’ve made the restorations easy to see. They’re streaming on Shout’s FAST channels, on Tubi, and on The Criterion Channel. At the same time, they’ve also been re-releasing the movies on 4K Blu-ray in feature-heavy editions.

Why A Better Tomorrow Is the Standout

Of their various releases, one of the most essential is the A Better Tomorrow trilogy. Not only are the three films included in new 4K transfers, but the set also includes some real treasures in the special features, such as a revelatory workprint cut of the second film (which I wrote about at length HERE).

Primer on the Films

For anyone unfamiliar with the films, here’s a quick primer. In 1986, John Woo was a fairly middling Hong Kong director, but everything changed when he made A Better Tomorrow. Inspired by Jean-Pierre Melville and Sam Peckinpah, Woo moved away from the kung-fu action Hong Kong cinema was known for and embraced gunplay instead, helping give birth to the Heroic Bloodshed genre.

One of the key ingredients was the against-type casting of Chow Yun-Fat as Mark Gor, a triad gangster in a trench coat and sunglasses with a matchstick hanging out of his mouth. Inspired by the cool of Alain Delon, the character was technically a supporting role, but it turned Chow into an overnight star and eventually one of the biggest global Chinese actors ever.

The movies themselves set the template for the style Woo would later perfect with The Killer and Hard-Boiled. The trilogy is inconsistent, since Woo only had full creative control over the first film, which is melodramatic and ragged but still an undisputed classic. The sequel resurrects the long-dead Mark Gor by giving him a twin brother, and although the film was hacked to pieces in the editing room, it still features one of the greatest action climaxes of all time — a sprawling final shootout where Ti Lung’s Ho, Ken (Chow), and Dean Shek’s Lung unleash brutal vengeance.

The Elusive Third Film

Better Tomorrow

The Better Tomorrow films were previously released in North America by Anchor Bay, but their versions didn’t include the third movie, A Better Tomorrow III: Love and Death in Saigon. The main reason is that John Woo didn’t direct it. Tsui Hark took over, using Woo’s original Vietnam-set prequel idea, which features Chow as a younger Mark Gor hustling weapons in Saigon near the end of the Vietnam War. Woo later revisited the concept with his own masterpiece, Bullet in the Head.

A Better Tomorrow III isn’t on the same level as the first two films—Hark didn’t have Woo’s flair for gunplay—but it’s still worth seeing for its vivid finale set during the fall of Saigon and the strong performances by Chow and co-star Anita Mui, who sadly passed away young (as did A Better Tomorrow I & II star Leslie Cheung).

Final Thoughts

The set is on the pricey side, but if you’re a fan of Hong Kong action cinema, it’s a must-have, especially for the A Better Tomorrow II workprint, the longer cut of the third film, and the candid John Woo interviews. If you have someone in your life who loves action movies, this is the Christmas present to end all Christmas presents. BUY IT HERE!

For seven seasons and 92 episodes, the AMC series Mad Men took viewers on a journey through the ’60s and into 1970 with advertising executive Don Draper (Jon Hamm), a creative director at the Sterling Cooper advertising agency on Madison Avenue in Manhattan. Mad Men wrapped up its run back in 2015, but fans can revisit the show with the new 4K transfer that’s streaming on HBO Max.

On second thought, you might just want to stick with your DVD and Blu-ray sets of the complete series, because something is very wrong with the 4K version of Mad Men that’s on HBO Max. As pointed out by X user bigrackspart7 (excellent user name, by the way), “The new 4K transfer of Mad Men on HBO somehow does not have any of the post-production edits added in, which means you get stuff like this where you can see the crew member manning the puke machine after Roger has too many oysters lmao”

That’s pretty embarrassing. At least it gives the previously unseen crew member a moment in the spotlight.

Other screw-ups in this presentation, as listed by Vulture: That same oyster-vomit episode, “Red in the Face,” was also mislabeled on HBO Max. It’s currently listed as another season-one episode, “Babylon.” And another episode from the first season, “5G”, which focuses on Don Draper’s relationship with his brother, Adam Whitman, is the one labeled as “Red in the Face.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO Max is aware of the issues and is awaiting the redelivery of the 4K files from Lionsgate.

As mentioned, Mad Men is a period drama set in the 1960s that follows the lives of advertising executives on Madison Avenue in New York City, primarily focusing on the talented but enigmatic creative director, Don Draper. The show explores their professional and personal lives, their struggles with happiness, and how they navigate the era’s social changes, including infidelity, ambition, and the evolving advertising landscape. Jon Hamm is joined in the cast by Elisabeth Moss, John Slattery, Vincent Kartheiser, Alison Brie, January Jones, Christina Hendricks, Robert Morse, Bryan Batt, Michael Gladis, Aaron Staton, Rich Sommer, Maggie Siff, Jared Harris, Kiernan Shipka, Jessica Paré, Christopher Stanley, Jay R. Ferguson, Kevin Rahm, Ben Feldman, and Mason Vale Cotton.

I missed out on Mad Men myself. I have yet to watch a single episode of the show, but I intend to watch it someday – and now I know not to watch the 4K version on HBO Max when the time comes.

Are you a fan of Mad Men, and have you been watching the bungled 4K transfer on HBO Max? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

JoBlo himself gave the film a 7/10 review when it was first released, Alejandro Stepenberg named the film as one of the best movies “you never saw,” and so did Chris Bumbray. Emilie Black wrote the Revisited video embedded above. They are just a few of the many fans this movie has – and its legion of fans will be glad to hear that Shout Factory is planning to give Brotherhood of the Wolf a 4K steelbook release on February 17, 2026. I remember liking this movie, but that’s about all I remember about it, as I probably haven’t watched it in around twenty years, even though I own a copy of the original U.S. DVD release.

The post How did Arrow Video’s 4K Blu-rays of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trilogy come out? We take a look at it! appeared first on JoBlo.

]]>
Cowabunga, dudes! The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies are getting a lot of love lately, as the 1990 Steve Barron film came back to theaters this past summer for its 35th anniversary and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze will be returning to big screens in March 2026! Now, Arrow Video will be distributing the upcoming 4K Blu-ray release of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trilogy, which will arrive in time for the holidays on December 16. You can order a copy on their website HERE.

Turtle fans rejoice! Arrow Video has come through on remastering the original trilogy of our childhoods for a brand new ultra-high-definition experience! Although the price can be intimidating for casual buyers, die-hard fans of the 90s film franchise, physical media collectors, and film completionists will definitely marvel at the new 4K set.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

So, first we have the 1990 Steve Barron film. Revisiting the film nowadays, it’s amazing how well it still holds up. One of the special features on this UHD disc is a brand new 2025 interview with Barron and he talks about how when he was presented with this film as a project, he wanted to rework the script because although it’s aimed primarily at kids, he knows the movie had potential to be enjoyable for adults as well and as we get older, we find more and more nuances than we previously realized.

The 4K is absolutely amazing. All of the movies in this set have had their pictures remastered in 4K, this one is from the film’s original negatives and was approved by the director, while the sequels were remastered from the 35mm interpositive by Arrow Films. All three films are presented in Dolby Vision and it was a real treat for the eyes this time around. What’s really surprising is that the colors really popped on all the films in this set. Barron was great at making New York look gritty and stark, which the new transfer maintains, but somehow the Turtles look even more vibrant than they ever have before. It took me back somewhat cause it’s like their greens had the consistency of Shrek, but it never truly took me out of the movie. It was just really interesting to see and a brand new way for the visuals to look.

The special features have interviews from Barron as well as Judith Hoag, who portrayed April, and the voice & stunt actors who helped to bring the Turtles to life. A lot of upgraded re-releases of past films have been very impressive about giving the viewers some new material for extras and this is no exception. The only thing I wish this disc had was some archival footage, including deleted scenes teased in the Turtle Power documentary. It’s likely that this was probably saved for the upcoming Ninja Turtles documentary — TMNT: Evolution, Mutation & Reboot. However, we DO get some unique alternate footage, including a Korean cut and a full UK cut with alternate takes edited in to censor Michaelangelo’s nunchucks.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze

After Steve Barron balanced the tone of the first one perfectly, New Line Cinema rushed out a sequel for the following year and while it came out pretty quicky, the movie never felt rushed and had been able to become its own movie. The sequel leaned the tone more towards the popular cartoon as elements of the film were lighter, like the Turtles not truly using their weapons, as well as the famous integration of Vanilla Ice whipping out a theme song for the Ninja Turtles within minutes of discovering them.

While it’s clear that the studio gave into the parents who thought the first was too dark, this entry is still very enjoyable as the Turtles are still a lot of fun and we do get more of an arc for them as they discover more about their past. The inclusion of new mutated villains is obviously inspired by the cartoon, but subplots like Ernie Reyes Jr.’s Keno attempting to infiltrate The Foot gives us a welcome look into their operation. Even if this sequel could feel like a cash grab (let’s not forget how New Line used to pump out A Nightmare on Elm Street sequels every year to capitalize on the popularity of Freddy Krueger), there’s still a lot of heart put into it. And even though I hadn’t mentioned it yet, the animatronics from the Jim Henson Workshop worked miracles in these movies as I can still watch these characters be expressive and feel real despite having limitations compared to CGI.

We get interviews from people like Paige Turco, who took over for April when Judith Hoag opted not to return, and composer John Du Prez, whose interview moreso encompasses the whole trilogy. The coolest special feature is the Behind the Shells documentary that also came out in 1991 to accompany the movie. This is also an extended cut, which is seemingly from an original broadcast version and features a bit more footage than the commercially released VHS version that you can currently watch on YouTube.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III

So, truth telling time. I don’t hate this movie. I don’t even dislike this movie. I for sure have nostalgia for it, but I also think it’s pretty fun for a kids adventure film. Shredder and The Foot clan are not back for the third time around and director Stuart Gillard (who has a commentary on this 4K release) pushed the tone fully into cartoon territory with a time travel plot. As a fan of the cartoons, I wasn’t put off from it as it was exactly the kind of chapter that would happen on the animated series.

What’s interesting to see this time around is the tone juxtaposing from the humor being cheesier than before to the villain portion of the movie that almost plays like a historical drama. The war of families between Lord Norinaga and Mitsu is an interesting backdrop to put in the middle of a Ninja Turtles film. And another layer showcases Norinaga trading with an Englishman named Walker, who is trying to sell him guns for the war, which he pushes for more as they mistake the Turtles for ancient Japanese demons.

Nowadays, I can appreciate the effort to bring some bizarre historical politics into a kids adventure, especially considering how Shredder had no visible plan in the first movie (What was he planning to do with his teenage thieving ring?). However, one can argue that it was perhaps executed a bit too dry.

The special features kind of showcase how much of a black sheep this entry is in the franchise as there is a commentary by the director, but the only interviews are with Vivian Wu and Sab Shimono, who portray Norinaga and Mitsu. There is also an alternate UK opening, which, again, showcases the censorship of Michaelangelo’s nunchucks.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Verdict

As stated before, the price of the set can be intimidating to a casual buyer, but 4Ks are currently holding a similar fight with streaming as movie theaters and they are offering a bevy of extras on certain titles along with the picture upgrade. This set is perfect for a Ninja Turtles super fan as it also includes stickers, trading cards and a book of essays about the films. A reversible poster is also included along with the packages sporting some newly commssioned art. These items bring to mind some nostalgia for special prizes sent to kids when you apply to be in a fan club back in the 90s. As a lover of the trilogy, the features are great to see, but the real star is the picture quality. These films have never looked better.

Welcome to Delos, the futuristic resort where, for $1,000 a day, wealthy vacationers can live out their wildest fantasies in hyper-realistic theme parks. In the Old West zone, friends Peter (Richard Benjamin) and John (James Brolin) saddle up for adventure, unaware that their dream holiday is about to turn into a nightmare. When a malfunction sends the park’s android hosts off script, the Gunslinger (Yul Brynner, in his iconic black-clad role) begins a relentless pursuit, obliterating the line between simulation and survival. Slick, suspenseful, and eerily prescient, Westworld combines a gripping man-versus-machine chase with thought-provoking questions about technology, control, and the price of playing God. Packed with atmosphere and memorable performances, this cult classic remains a landmark in genre cinema – a high-tech nightmare that never loses its bite.

Netflix has released hundreds of movies over the last decade, but sadly, very few of them have been released on physical media. Thankfully, that won’t be the fate of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein. The director responded to a fan on X to say that the deleted convent scene will be included in the physical media release of Frankenstein.

Criterion Collection Most Likely to Release Frankenstein on Physical Media

There’s no word on who will be releasing Frankenstein on physical media, but I would place my bets on The Criterion Collection. They’ve already released a handful of del Toro movies, including Cronos, The Devil’s Backbone, Pan’s Labyrinth, Nightmare Alley, The Shape of Water, and Pinocchio. They’re also one of the few distributors to have previously released Netflix Originals. Roma, Beasts of No Nation, Uncut Gems, Okja, The Irishman, Marriage Story, Mudbound, and The Power of the Dog have all been released by Criterion. It’s very easy to see Frankenstein joining their ranks.

There are so many movies (and TV shows) on streaming services that are absolutely deserving of a physical media release, if only to preserve them, because you never know when they might disappear entirely.

What Did We Think of Frankenstein?

Our own Chris Bumbray caught Frankenstein at the Toronto International Film Festival, and while he said the film was impressive, it wasn’t quite the masterpiece he was hoping it would be. “While I can’t quite call this my favorite Frankenstein adaptation, I’ll admit the overly drawn-out first half tested my patience,” he wrote. “Still, once the movie finds its footing, the second half is close to brilliant. Even if it’s uneven and slow to start, it ultimately blossoms into something powerful, a film that demands to be seen. It may take longer than it should to arrive at its peak, but when it does, it’s a striking reminder of what happens when a filmmaker is granted the freedom to pursue an undiluted vision. Del Toro has earned that privilege, and the result, while imperfect, is still essential viewing.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.

As for what’s next for Del Toro, the director did tease one of his next projects several months ago, which would reunite him with Frankenstein star Oscar Isaac. “I’m writing a project to do with Oscar,” he said. “I’m writing it right now, and it’s called Fury, and essentially it’s going back to [the] sort of thriller aspects of Nightmare Alley — very cruel, very violent. Like My Dinner with Andre but [with] killing people after each course.

Prior to Police Story, Jackie Chan attempted to make his second American-produced film after he was incredibly disappointed with Battle Creek Brawl. That second attempt became 1985’s The Protector. Chan would be vocal about his creative differences with director James Glickenhaus, but the film still became somewhat of a cult classic. It was an interesting direction for Chan as they tried to make him more like a Dirty Harry-esque cop. The film also stars Danny Aiello, Victor Arnold, Moon Lee, and Roy Chiao.

88 Films has announced it’s March releases and Blu-ray.com reports that The Protector will be getting a 4K Blu-ray from the label. While 88 Films is a British-based distributor, the Blu-rays will be multi-regional, so domestic buyers should take note! The new 4-disc set will not only feature the original US theatrical version, but it will also include the Hong Kong version that was re-directed by Chan, as well as a UK version of the film.

The Protector hits retailers on March 16.

The description reads,
“Description: After the kidnapping of a wealthy businessman’s daughter, maverick New York City cops Billy Wong (Jackie Chan) and Danny Garoni (Danny Aiello) are sent to garner leads in Hong Kong, but the pair find themselves beset by the local police and crime boss, Harold Ko (Roy Chiao) who will stop at nothing in ensuring the continuity of his drug empire.”

The technical specs read:

  • Video

    HDR: Dolby Vision, HDR10
    Aspect ratio: 1.85:1

While there hasn’t been a list of extras announced with the 4K release (except for the multiple international cuts), it’s possible that 88 Films might integrate some of the special features that were included in the regular Blu-ray that became available a few years ago. Those special features included:

Cowabunga, dudes! The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies are getting a lot of love lately, as the 1990 Steve Barron film came back to theaters this past summer for its 35th anniversary and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze will be returning to big screens in March! Now, Arrow Video has released a new trailer for the upcoming 4K Blu-ray release of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trilogy, which will arrive in time for the holidays on December 16. You can order a copy on their website HERE.

The description reads,
“A shell-shocking saga of mutants, martial arts and New York mayhem, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trilogy brought comic book grit, practical effects wizardry and pizza-fuelled fun to a generation of moviegoers, helping turn four sewer-dwelling brothers into global pop culture icons.

Launching in 1990 with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, director Steve Barron’s gritty, high-energy adaptation of the underground comic became a box office phenomenon, fusing martial arts action, streetwise humor and the groundbreaking animatronics of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. The 1991 sequel The Secret of the Ooze is an irresistibly fun second slice: a deep-dive into the turtles’ origins where new mutant foes Tokka and Rahzar are thrown in the mix… double the stakes, double the pizza! Rounding out the trilogy, 1993’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III sends the heroes in a half shell back to feudal Japan in a time-travel adventure full of samurai showdowns, ancient legends and comic chaos.

Restored in glorious 4K and packed with extras, this radical set celebrates the legacy of Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael in one of the most iconic franchises of the era, blending innovative effects, comic-book heart and early ’90s attitude.”

Last month, a new 4K Blu-ray of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights was announced. The release date is set for December 9, and you don’t have to be part of the Christmas Adventurers Club to get one. Blu-ray.com has now released more details on the upcoming physical media copy.

The description reads,

Under the stage name of Dirk Diggler, Eddie soon gives the adult entertainment world a star the likes of which it has never seen. But the rise to fame has its costs, and soon Dirk finds himself sliding down the slippery slope of sex, drugs and violence. The only question: can he get himself back together before it’s too late?

From an original screenplay by Anderson, the film was nominated for three Academy Awards – Best Supporting Actor (Burt Reynolds), Best Supporting Actress (Julianne Moore), and Best Screenplay – Written Directly for the Screen (Paul Thomas Anderson). Reynolds won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor, and Julianne Moore also received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Severin Films is announcing the Blu-ray release of one of the most unique films in the martial arts genre. The Crippled Masters is a 1979 Chinese Kung Fu film that stars Frankie Shum and Jackie Conn using their skills in the martial arts to defeat evil doers despite not having the use of all their limbs. Blu-ray.com reports that the cult film will be hitting retailers on Black Friday.

The description reads,
“More than four decades ago, “one of the strangest and most shocking martial arts movies ever witnessed” (DVD Talk) drove 42nd Street audiences into a stunned frenzy. Today it remains an “amazing” (Severed Cinema), “genuinely jaw-dropping” (High Def Digest) “undisputed masterpiece” (Grindhouse Database), and is officially licensed on disc in North America for the first time: When a cruel crime boss chops off the arms of a peasant (Sung-Chuan Shen aka Frankie Shum, who was born with Thalidomide Syndrome) and acid-dissolves the lower limbs of a henchman (Chao-Ming Kang aka Jackie Conn, born with small, deformed legs), the two disabled men train under a mysterious master to combine themselves into one unstoppable fighting machine and battle their way to vengeance. Chung Chien Li (THE GUY WITH THE SECRET KUNG FU) and Chen Mu-Chuan (THE IRON MONKEY) co-star in “the FREAKS of martial arts cinema” (1000 Misspent Hours) directed by Chi Lo aka Joe Law (THE DRAGON LIVES AGAIN), newly scanned in 4K from the interpositive with 3 hours of revealing Special Features produced exclusively for this release.”

Our editor-in-chief, Chris Bumbray, saw Roofman at the Toronto International Film Festival and loved it! In his 9/10 review, Chris said Roofman is the kind of studio filmmaking we need more of. “It tells a relatable, moving story in a fun way—and is a movie I believe many of our readers will treasure once it comes out. It’s certainly one of the best movies I’ve seen this year, and maybe the only studio movie this year besides F1, Sinners, Caught Stealing, and Weapons that really made me feel the way I used to whenever I saw a movie I loved. They gave me a true cinematic experience, and I think Tatum and Dunst deserve some Oscar love this year.”

Blu-ray.com has just passed along the news that 1980’s The Stunt Man is getting a brand new 4K Blu-ray release from Radiance Films. The film stars Peter O’Toole, Steve Railsback, Barbara Hershey, Allen Garfield, and Alex Rocco. This new physical media release is scheduled to hit retailers early next year on February 23, 2026.

The description reads,
“Cameron (Steve Railsback, Lifeforce) is a man who finds himself unmoored from American life: recently returned from Vietnam, he is now a drifter on the run from the law. While evading police, he stumbles upon the filming of a World War I movie helmed by the megalomaniacal Eli Cross (Peter O’Toole, Lawrence of Arabia). When Cameron discovers that he bears a striking resemblance to the lead actor, he hatches a plan: to hide from his potential captors by disguising himself as a stunt double and agreeing to perform a series of increasingly dangerous stunts.

But nothing is what it first seems on an Eli Cross set, and as illusion and make-believe start to bleed into one another, Cameron finds himself locked in a battle of wits with a possibly insane genius, and in danger of becoming unmoored not just from society, but from reality itself…

Newly restored in 4K, The Stunt Man was a critical smash that suffered from distribution issues on its original release in 1980 – it was nevertheless nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Director for Richard Rush, and has earned a reputation as one of the most beloved cult films of all time. Featuring one of Peter O’Toole’s greatest performances, and enough action-packed mayhem to power several blockbusters, The Stunt Man is – to use the words of Eli Cross – pure movie magic.”

The “Festival Cut” of Bullet in the Head is a Holy Grail special feature as it has not been seen outside of film festivals in any kind of commercial release. The Festival Cut is reported to have a runtime of around 136 minutes (approx. 2h 16m). The Festival Cut reportedly includes scenes that are absent in the widely available theatrical cut. For example, some accounts mention the “urine drinking” scene (during a POW-camp sequence), which appears only in the Festival Cut. The film has more than one ending. One ending is a car-chase shootout finale (supposedly Woo’s originally intended ending); another is a boardroom confrontation ending (reportedly added to satisfy runtime/distributor demands). The Festival Cut is said to include the “car chase” ending.

As for Once a Thief, stay tuned for more details on its release. The description reads, Once a Thief is an action/comedy/romance movie involving the plight of three master thieves (a la Pink Panther). All three were raised by the same father as street orphans. After a successful art heist followed by a pledge to make it the last crime ever for the trio, the plot revolves around the theft of a mysterious ‘cursed’ painting and how its obsession affects the family. Directed by John Woo, and starring Cherie Chung, Chow Yun-Fat, and Leslie Cheung.”
