Filmmaker Johannes Roberts knows how to bring a little energy to his fright flicks, including his latest, Primate. Frankly, I dug his work on The Strangers: Prey at Night and 47 Meters Down, both of which had me giddy with fun frights. In Primate, he explores another wild animal. And this time, we meet Ben, the chimpanzee. Frankly, I’d hate to spoil anything for audiences. However, I will say that this one is far bloodier and more gruesome than you might expect. The cast is impressive, especially Johnny Sequoyah and Oscar-winning actor Troy Kotsur (Coda). And I cannot say enough about Miguel Torres Umba as Ben.

I went into Primate, only watching the trailer. And when I sat down with Johnny Sequoyah, Troy Kotsur, and Johannes Roberts, the film impressed me even more. With the use of practical effects, Primate manages to create one of the most realistic cinematic animals I’ve witnessed. Ben is a fascinating character, and he came up often during the conversations.

Both Johnny and Troy discussed working with Mr. Roberts and finding the reality in their characters. As well, they had high praise for their on-screen co-star. I’ve admired Troy’s work for quite a while now, and I was equally impressed by Ms. Sequoyah here. As for Johannes, I had the pleasure of meeting the director back when The Strangers: Prey at Night was released, and thoroughly enjoyed meeting him back then. And it was terrific speaking with him about Ben, and this modern man-versus-nature creature feature.

Primate opens this Friday. You can check out our own Mike Holtz’s very positive take here.

What Is We Bury the Dead About?

At a time when zombie stories have fully entered the mainstream thanks to shows like The Walking Dead, it’s increasingly difficult to find a fresh angle on the undead. Enter filmmaker Zak Hilditch, best known for the excellent These Final Hours. With We Bury the Dead, Hilditch delivers a strikingly original and grounded take on the zombie genre—one that’s brought hauntingly to life by Daisy Ridley.

Rather than focusing on spectacle, We Bury the Dead takes a deeply personal and realistic approach. The result is a film that’s creepy, unsettling, and genuinely heartbreaking.

A More Grounded Take on Zombie Horror

In my conversation with Hilditch, the director discussed the ideas behind his latest film and his belief that the most effective horror is rooted in reality. As with his earlier work, We Bury the Dead finds its originality in emotional truth—much of it inspired by themes of loss and grief. It’s this grounding that makes the film feel so different from standard zombie fare.

Daisy Ridley and Brenton Thwaites on Performance and Tone

I also spoke separately with Brenton Thwaites and Ridley about their roles. Ridley opened up about the tragedy at the heart of her character, delivering an affecting and deeply sympathetic performance that ranks among her strongest work to date.

Thwaites, meanwhile, turns in another solid performance and proved to be an incredibly relaxed and thoughtful interview subject. He spoke highly of Ridley’s work and of the appeal of tackling a zombie film that prioritizes substance over shock.

Is We Bury the Dead Worth Seeing?

Yes. We Bury the Dead is currently in theaters and is well worth experiencing on the big screen, where its atmosphere and emotional weight fully land.

We are in the midst of one of the strangest marketing campaigns for a horror movie ever, complete with releasing full, spoilerific scenes, making it look like a Hallmark date night movie, and even offering photos of the star’s feet. It’s been…strange to say the least. I’m not entirely sure why they didn’t just take the approach of “Hey, this is a killer Santa movie!” Especially after the original literally had mothers protesting it. But that doesn’t mean that Silent Night, Deadly Night isn’t worth watching. Quite the opposite, in fact. I quite enjoyed this take on the classic Christmas Horror film, and you can check out my positive review HERE.

I was very excited to talk with stars Rohan Campbell and Ruby Modine, as well as writer/director Mike P. Nelson. Rohan and I get into the similarities between his Billy and his Halloween Ends character Corey Cunningham. Mike also teases some of his plans for a sequel if they are lucky enough to get the opportunity. I also made sure to find out what experience the three had with the original film. These were great talks, and you can check them out in the video above!

Silent Night, Deadly Night plot:

After witnessing his parents’ brutal murder on Christmas Eve, Billy grows up to deliver an annual spree of holiday violence. This year, his blood-soaked mission collides with love, as a young woman challenges him to confront his darkness. “Have you been naughty?”’

In the six years since It: Chapter Two concluded the adaptation of Stephen King’s iconic novel, Bill Skarsgard’s portrayal of Pennywise has become a staple of Halloween costumes and nightmares. But, the foray into Derry was only the beginning as producers Barbara and Andy Muschietti have teamed with writer Jason Fuchs to plumb the depths of King’s fictional Maine town by expanding on backstories hinted at in It. Welcome To Derry is a long-form exploration into the origins of the monstrous entity claiming children decades before the events of the first film and gives us more insight into the horrors we have seen in the two part movie.

It: Welcome to Derry (read our review) takes place in 1962, twenty-seven years before the events of It: Chapter One. Centered on the children living in Derry who begin to experience the manifestations of Pennywise, the series shows us the parents and ancestors of characters from the films including Mike Hanlon’s grandparents Charlotte (Taylour Paige) and Leroy as well as Dick Hallorann (Chris Chalk), better known for his experiences at the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. As the series once again shows kids facing off with horrifying visions, we also find out about those who are aware of Pennywise’s long presence in Derry and how it has been afflicting the town for generations.

I spoke with the cast and creators of It: Welcome to Derry about the series. Taylour Paige and Jovan Adepo talked about their experiences meeting Bill Skarsgard in his Pennywise costume as well as the balance of historical events within the fictional past of Derry. Chris Chalk talked about whether he looked at other actors who have portrayed Dick Hallorann for inspiration or if he made the role his own while Stephen Rider talked about the non-supernatural horrors that his character faces in the series. James Remar and Kimberly Norris Guerrero discussed the bond between their characters and what they felt was most important in connecting this story to the novel. Showrunners Jason Fuchs and Brad Kane talked about their favorite easter eggs while Barbara Muschietti and director Andy Muschietti reflected on whether anyone else could have led this series as well as why they chose for the horrors to look the way they do. Check out the full interviews in the embed above.

It: Welcome To Derry is now airing on HBO and HBO Max.

I remember hearing about Shelby Oaks back in 2021 and was instantly curious. Writer/Director Chris Stuckmann had been a YouTube Film Critic for many years, so it’s always intriguing to see someone break into a new space like that. While this venture has unfortunately meant that he’s all but left the film of actual film criticism behind, he clearly has some big names behind him for his next career path. While I wasn’t the biggest fan of the film (check out my review HERE), Stuckmann has a lot of potential as a director.

I chatted with Stuckmann about his directorial debut and how much it changed from the Festival circuit last year to this month’s release (we reviewed the original cut back then and weren’t too impressed).  We also got into what it was like to have a horror great like Mike Flanagan champion the project. And I couldn’t help but ask about the prison in the film, which was also the location used for the Shawshank Redemption. This was a great talk and I look forward to seeing what he gets up to next. Check out the full interview in the embedded video above.

Shelby Oaks plot:

A woman’s desperate search for her long-lost sister falls into obsession upon realizing that the imaginary demon from their childhood may have been real.

The Friday the 13th franchise is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year, and to mark the occasion, a convention called Crystal Lake Nightmares was recently held in California, featuring dozens of guests that had a hand in bringing my favorite franchise to the screen. JoBlo’s own Ryan Cultrera was in attendance and had the chance to talk to many of the guests, and some of his interviews have been cut together in the video embedded above. The main selling point of this video is the fact that it features interviews with three of the men who have played Jason Voorhees over the decades: Ari Lehman, who played the character for his appearances in the original Friday the 13th (including that famous jump scare); Ken Kirzinger, who played the character for his clash with fellow horror icon Freddy Krueger in Freddy vs. Jason; and Kane Hodder, who has played Jason more times than anyone else. Not only did he bring Jason to life in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, and Jason X, but he also did the motion-capture performance the character when they were making Friday the 13th: The Game!

In addition to the Jasons, there are interview clips with Harry Manfredini, who composed the musical score for many of the movies in the franchise; Amy Steel, who played one of the most popular final girls in the series (Ginny Field in Friday the 13th Part 2); Thom Mathews, who played hero Tommy Jarvis in Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI (which was actually the last chapter in a “Tommy Jarvis trilogy”); Jason Goes to Hell director Adam Marcus, cast member Steven Williams (the legendary Creighton Duke), and special effects artist Robert Kurtzman; Freddy vs. Jason cast member Lochlyn Munro; and Jason Lives writer/ director Tom McLoughlin, the man I hold responsible for my entire horror fandom, as Jason Lives is the movie that I credit with getting me into the genre.

I’m a huge fan of the entire Friday the 13th franchise, so I could watch and listen to the people who have brought these beloved movies to the screen talk about them all day long. Are you a fan of this franchise? Take a look at the interviews above, then let us know by leaving a comment below.

Sometimes a trailer releases for a film and absolutely blows audiences away, getting them more than hyped for the film’s eventual release. Unfortunately, a good trailer does not make a good film, and HIM was absolutely ravaged by critics. I can’t say I was the biggest fan (check out my review HERE) but that had nothing to do with Tyriq, who I think was one of the film’s highlights. Now, the film is releasing on physical media, and more people will be able to check it out, with considerably lower expectations.

I talked to Tyriq about the film’s negative reception and his take on it – which you can watch in the video embedded above:

“I know why we made this movie… It’s to bring conversations to the table not many people are wanting to talk about. I’m indifferent to the reaction where I’m super proud, and that’s all I can control.”

He also got into why he thinks the film will catch on more in the future, due to its messaging. He could be right, as Marlon Wayans recently went on a social media rant where he compared HIM‘s reception to several other movies that he’s made that have become more popular in recent years. He also dips into how the film’s first trailer blew up on social media, coinciding with him promoting his role in the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot, which hit theaters during the summer. Indeed, it’s been a big year for Withers, and his busy schedule isn’t set to let up any time soon. The rising star has a ton of stuff coming up, with him set to co-star with fellow genre fave Maika Monroe in the next Colleen Hoover adaptation, Reminders of Him, which is due out on Valentine’s Day and recently got a trailer.

HIM plot:

A young athlete descends into a world of terror when he’s invited to train with a legendary champion whose charisma curdles into something darker.

HIM is Now Available on Digital and releases on BluRay, 4K Ultra HD, and DVD on November 11th, 2025. What did you think of HIM? Let us know in the comments.

The Halloween Horror Nights event will be running at Universal Orlando and Universal Studios Hollywood for another week, giving visitors their required amount of spooky season frights. Among the genre stars and filmmakers who have made their way out to Universal parks for the event were Terrifier franchise star David Howard Thornton, Terrifier franchise heroine Lauren LaVera, genre filmmaker Fede Álvarez (whose credits include Evil Dead 2013 and Alien: Romulus), and Jason Patric of The Lost Boys and Terrifier 3. JoBlo’s own Ryan Cultera was able to catch up with all of them as they walked the Halloween Horror Nights red carpet and took the opportunity to talk to them about their work in the genre, as well as their personal Halloween celebrations. You can see how it went in the video embedded above!

During her conversation with Ryan, Lauren LaVera revealed that she would love to have her Terrifier character Sienna meet up with either Bruce Campbell’s Evil Dead character Ash Williams, or with Halloween slasher Michael Myers. David Howard Thornton discussed the popularity of Art the Clown and the challenges and joys of bringing that character to life. Fede Álvarez talked about working on iconic properties – and revealed who his favorite monster is (of course, it’s a Universal classic). Jason Patric also named his favorite monster(s), reminisced about his favorite Halloween costume, and discussed Halloween candy… including the chocolate bar that his mom used to steal from him. There’s something very cool to me about seeing Jason Patric reveal that he’s a fan of the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

If I were to be asked what my favorite childhood Halloween costume was, it wouldn’t be the time I was too embarrassed to go trick or treating in my Raphael (the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle) costume. It would be when I went walking the streets in my Jason Voorhees costume, complete with a plastic meat cleaver.

Keep your eyes peeled for even more spooky interviews on JoBlo Celebrity Access all week, including a great chat we had with some veterans of the Friday the 13th series! That’s coming up later this week.

When George A. Romero passed away in 2017, the zombie genre was suddenly without its biggest influence. Now, his daughter Tina is taking the reins and trying her hand at the sub-genre her father helped mould. While her style is decidedly more comedy than horror (check out my review HERE), it’s still steeped in social commentary and manages to get the most important aspect right: entertainment value. From glittery zombies to one of the most eclectic and likable casts out there, it’s clear Tina has a very clear vision and style, much like her father. Indeed, her father, George, is undoubtedly the father of the modern zombie film, with Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead being the O.G. zombie trilogy we all worship. Having grown up with her father’s movies, Tina has a real love and expertise for the genre as well (she actually pops up in Land of the Dead as a soldier).

I sat down with Tina as well as her cast which includes Katy O’Brian, Riki Lindhome, Jack Haven, Margaret Cho, Nina Bloomgarden, and Tomas Matos. We got into all things Queens of the Dead like how much fun the shoot was, and how Tina was as a director. Tina also gets into why Dawn of the Dead is her favorite of her father’s zombie films and why that was her biggest inspiration on her own film. Check out the interview in the embedded video above!

Queens of the Dead plot:

A zombie apocalypse breaks out in Brooklyn on the night of a giant warehouse party, where an eclectic group of drag queens, club kids, and frenemies must put aside their drama and use their unique skills to fight against the brain-thirsty, scrolling undead.

Queens of the Dead is in theatres now and on Shudder soon.

After last year’s MadS, I was very curious as to what director David Moreau would get up to next. He had such a unique vision that, even though I didn’t love the film, it was still so unlike anything else, that I was curious to see his next film. And he continues to go down the gimmick path, this time focusing almost entirely on Olga Kurylenko, not really allowing other face’s to be shown throughout the runtime. It’s an interesting approach, and not one you see often. But it results in a film that certainly has its moments (check out my review HERE).

I chatted with star Olga Kurylenko about the film, and we got into how much she connected to the model character, having been a model at a young age herself. Thankfully, she had a much better experience with her mother. She also discussed a pretty interesting moment that ended up getting cut from the film, that I really wish we would have gotten. Olga was absolutely charming and personable and you can check out the interview in the embedded video above.

The Black Phone continued to prove what a great combination Ethan Hawke offers with horror. Yet it wasn’t simply his excellent work that helped propel fans to the cinema. The Scott Derrickson feature also gave the young actors Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw the chance to shine. And that continues with this year’s Black Phone 2. Both Mason and Madeleine return, offering exceptional performances in a genre sequel. By allowing these two young talents the chance to shine even more, it helps give a little extra when it comes to Derrickson’s latest.

I finally had the opportunity to sit down with both Thames and McGraw in person; the last time we spoke was on Zoom. As for Mason, the actor has received a massive boost in his career with the recent How to Train Your Dragon live-action remake. And now, he continues to show off his talent in the follow-up to the genre hit. He talked about taking on the sequel and expanding his role in this twisted world. As for his co-star, Madeleine is equally impressive. And she really gets in on the action with a little stuntwork. She discussed that aspect, as well as the trust they have in Mr. Derrickson. With October in full swing, I’m sure many of you will be ready and willing to see what The Grabber is up to. Black Phone 2 opens this Friday, October 17th, in a theatre near you. There have been so many horror movies released this month and last that it can be kind of hard to keep track of them all. But if you’re looking for something sexy, violent, and mysterious, then I can’t recommend Bone Lake enough. This has managed to be one of my favorite horror films of the year and boasts some great performances and a great blending of genres. You can check out my review HERE.

This is the second time I’ve spoken to Maddie Hasson, and her energy is absolutely infectious. Her charisma makes it unsurprising that she’s finally leading movies, and I’m sure there are more in her future. Her performance in Bone Lake is fantastic, and brings plenty of vulnerability and quiet strength. We discuss why we need more erotic thrillers in the cinema. And, hilariously, Maddie also gets into why she would double-feature the film with The Evil Dead. And her answer may surprise you. Check it all out in the video above!

Bone Lake plot:

A couple’s romantic vacation at a secluded lakeside estate is upended when they are forced to share the mansion with a mysterious and attractive couple. In this darkly hilarious and seductive horror story, a dream getaway spirals into a nightmarish maze of sex, lies, and manipulation, bringing terrifying secrets to light and triggering a bloody battle for survival.

Bone Lake is currently playing In Theaters Everywhere!

The Friday the 13th franchise is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year, and to mark the occasion, a convention called Crystal Lake Nightmares was recently held in California, featuring dozens of guests that had a hand in bringing my favorite franchise to the screen. JoBlo’s own Ryan Cultrera was in attendance and had the chance to talk to some of the guests, including composer Harry Manfredini, the man who provided the music for most of the movies in the franchise and the creator of that iconic “Ki Ki Ki Ma Ma Ma” sound effect. You can find out what Manfredini had to say about his work on the franchise in the video embedded above.

Manfredini composed the scores for Friday the 13th (1980), Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981), Friday the 13th Part III (1982), Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984), Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985), and Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI (1986), before passing the baton and some of his music tracks over to Fred Mollin, who was the composer on the seventh and eighth films. Manfredini circled back to the franchise to provide the music for Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993) and Jason X (2001), as well as the 2017 video game and the 2013 documentary Crystal Lake Memories.

Outside of the Friday the 13th franchise, Manfredini’s music can be heard in the likes of The Children (1980), Wes Craven’s Swamp Thing (1982), The Hills Have Eyes Part II (1984), Slaughter High (1985), House (1985), House II: The Second Story (1987), DeepStar Six (1989), House III: The Horror Show (1989), Aces: Iron Eagle III (1992), House IV (1992), Kickboxer 3: The Art of War (1992), My Boyfriend’s Back (1993), Wishmaster (1997), Terminal Invasion (2002), multiple 1313 movies, Morgan: Killer Doll, Jurassic Reborn, and much more.

If you’re a fan of ’80s horror, you’ve probably heard a lot of his music. I watch the Friday the 13th movies so often, his music is practically the soundtrack of my life.

Dakota Fanning (The Watchers) and The Strangers director Bryan Bertino have teamed up for a horror movie called Vicious, which is coming our way from Paramount Pictures. The movie bounced around the release schedule a little bit; it was originally scheduled to reach theatres on August 8th, then it was pushed up to February 28th, and then it was pulled off of Paramount’s release schedule completely. Now, the film is set to receive a digital and Paramount+ streaming release on October 10th – and in anticipation of that release, JoBlo’s own Mike Holtz had the chance to sit down for interviews with both Fanning and Bertino! You can check them out in the embed above.

Holtz also saw the movie when it played at Fantastic Fest, and you can read his review at THIS LINK.

Scripted by Bertino, Vicious sees Fanning taking on the role of a young woman who is left a strange present by a late-night visitor, and quickly realizes she is fighting for her life after slipping down a disturbing rabbit hole contained inside the gift. Here’s another synopsis: When Polly (Dakota Fanning) receives a mysterious Box from an unexpected late-night visitor, it comes with a simple instruction: place three things inside: something you need, something you hate, and something you love. What begins as a strange ritual quickly unravels into a waking nightmare. Trapped in a terrifying world where reality bends and memory betrays, Polly must navigate a series of impossible choices. As time slips away, she’s forced to confront the darkness not just around her, but within her—before it consumes everything and everyone she’s ever known.

Fanning is joined in the cast by Devyn Nekoda (Scream VI), Mary McCormack (The West Wing), Rachel Blanchard (The Summer I Turned Pretty), Kathryn Hunter (Poor Things), Klea Scott (Millennium), and Emily Mitchell (Ordinary Angels).

An Atlas Independent production, the film was produced by Richard Suckle and Bertino, with Melinda Whitaker serving as executive producer with Shane Boucher.

Bertino made his feature directorial debut with the 2008 horror film The Strangers and has since followed that up with three more horror films: 2014’s Mockingbird, which he co-wrote with Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail2016’s The Monster, and 2020’s The Dark and the Wicked. He also wrote the initial screenplay for The Strangers: Prey at Night, which got a rewrite from Ben Ketai and ended up being directed by Johannes Roberts. While Bertino focuses on Vicious, the Strangers franchise is continuing on without him with a trilogy that was directed by Renny Harlin.

Vicious has been rated R for strong bloody violence, some grisly images, and language.

Are you looking forward to Vicious? Check out our interviews with Fanning and Bertino, then let us know by leaving a comment below.

The Friday the 13th franchise is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year, and to mark the occasion, a convention called Crystal Lake Nightmares was recently held in California, featuring dozens of guests that had a hand in bringing my favorite franchise to the screen. JoBlo’s own Ryan Cultrera was in attendance and had the chance to talk to some of the guests, including Ken Kirzinger, who played the hockey-masked iconic slasher Jason Voorhees in the Nightmare on Elm Street crossover Freddy vs. Jason, and Lochlyn Munro, who played one of Jason’s victims in that film. You can watch the interview with Kirzinger and Munro in the embed above!

Directed by Ronny Yu (who previously worked with another iconic slasher on Bride of Chucky) from a screenplay by Damian Shannon and Mark J. Swift (with an uncredited polish by David S. Goyer), Freddy vs. Jason has the following synopsis: Get ready for the ultimate showdown! It’s been nearly ten years since Freddy, from the Nightmare on Elm Street series, invaded people’s dreams to exact his deadly form of revenge and murder. But now, his memory has been systematically erased by a town determined to put an end to Freddy once and for all. Until, that is, Freddy resurrects Jason, the equally iconic madman from the Friday the 13th series. Jason is the perfect means for Freddy to once again instill fear on Elm Street and start a new reign of terror. But as the bodies begin to pile up, he discovers that Jason isn’t willing to cease his murderous ways and step aside so easily. Now, with a terrified town in the middle, the two titans of terror enter into a horrifying showdown of epic proportions.

Kirzinger and Munro were joined in the cast by Monica Keena, Jason Ritter, Kelly Rowland, Chris Marquette, Brendan Fletcher, Katharine Isabelle, Kyle Labine, Tom Butler, Paula Shaw, David Kopp, Jesse Hutch, Zack Ward, Garry Chalk, Chris Gauthier, and Odessa Munroe, with Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger. Kirzinger’s casting was a shock for fans at the time, since everyone expected the role to remain with Kane Hodder, who had played Jason in the previous four movies.

I can’t act like I’ve been the biggest fan of the films that Neil Marshall and Charlotte Kirk have been making together in recent years. They just haven’t been for me, and I’ve longed for the days of Marshall helming material like The Descent and even Doomsday. I am happy to say that their newest film Compulsion is likely their best effort, combining Giallo and Erotic Thriller to an interesting result. It’s filled with great practical effects and very European sensibilities.

Now we’re getting the final collaboration between Marshall/Kirk, and I was able to chat with them all about it. A common throughline when speaking to them both was a certain sequence done all in one take, and all the challenges that came with it. Kirk seemed down for the challenge, as well as the more erotic elements at play. Marshall also gets into the recent headlines of a Descent prequel, and what we can expect from the new 4K transfer of the original film. These were great talks and you can check them out in the embedded video above.

Compulsion plot:

A young woman’s visit to her stepfather’s villa spirals into danger when she’s targeted by con artists and a violent murder forces her into a deadly cover-up. As a local detective closes in, trust cracks and dark secrets are exposed.

Compulsion is Now Available in Select Theaters, Digital and On Demand.

I’ve been a fan of The Conjuring from the very beginning. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson have done wonders with these two characters. The two actors have brought them to life as the cinematic version of Ed and Lorraine Warren. In fact, the four films work because you care about those involved. And I was utterly satisfied with The Conjuring: Last Rites being the last one – we’ll see on that. For this viewer, it was an epic conclusion to the franchise.

Directed by Michael Chaves, who helmed the third film, this latest chapter feels like a return to what came before. They saved the best for last in many ways, as it brings all the series elements together with a few solid spine-tingling scares. What Conjuring movies do well is bring genuine heart and emotion to the big screen. This one has that in abundance, as the family element plays a key role in the frights.

I’ve been lucky enough to cover this franchise from the very beginning with JoBlo, and this time around felt extra special. Once again, I loved speaking with the incredible twosome, Wilson and Farmiga. Talking with Mr. James Wan is always fantastic, and his continued love for The Conjuring is evident. Finally, there is Michael Chaves. The director managed to take on this story and bring his own style without losing what makes it special.

And when it came to the newbies to the series, I spoke with Ben Hardy and Mia Tomlinson. Mia takes on the role of Judy Warren, and Ben plays her soon-to-be husband. The two add a little bit of freshness to the mix. All our conversations were terrific, and I even shared my first experience with a fictional Ed and Lorraine Warren, one that James Wan brought up. I will always hold a special place in my heart for this series, and here’s hoping you all enjoy this final offering.

The Conjuring: The Last Rites opens this Friday.

The original Toxic Avenger is one of the most insane films that’s ever been made. I still remember watching it as a teenager and constantly going “What on earth is happening?!” So it was surprising to see a reboot on the way, but with Peter Dinklage in the titular role! Then add in phenomenal actors like Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood, and Jacob Tremblay, and you’ve got the recipe for intrigue. That’s a great way to pique the interest of anyone who may not know what they’re in for with this insane Troma-inspired venture. And it’s honestly a ton of a fun that is sure to, like the original, gain a following.

I was fortunate enough to talk to original Toxie creator (and Troma founder) Lloyd Kaufman about his cult classic getting the remake treatment. Remake writer/director Macon Blair and I get into why physical media is still so important (we can thankfully expect a full commentary track from him with this film), as well as why it took so long for us to get it. Then, Jacob Tremblay gets into why the set was such a blast to be a part of and why Macon is so special as a director. Genuinely, these are some of my favorite talks I’ve ever had with JoBlo, and I can’t wait for you to see the full interviews. Check out our review HERE!

The Toxic Avenger plot: When a downtrodden janitor, Winston Gooze, is exposed to a catastrophic toxic accident, he’s transformed into a new kind of hero: The Toxic Avenger. Now, Toxie must rise from outcast to savior, taking on ruthless corporate overlords and corrupt forces who threaten his son, his friends, and his community. In a world where greed runs rampant… justice is best served radioactive.

THE TOXIC AVENGER IS PLAYING IN THEATERS ON AUGUST 29TH, 2025.

Writer/director Kevin S. Tenney’s 1986 horror classic Witchboard (watch it HERE) is getting the remake treatment couresty of director Chuck Russell, who was bringing us the likes of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and the remake of The Blob back in the days when Witchboard was gathering its earliest fans. JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols was able to watch the remake last year (you can read his review at THIS LINK) and a wider audience will be able to check it out now that it has received a theatrical release. To celebrate this long-awaited release, we were able to score interviews with Russell and the film’s stars Madison Iseman and Aaron Dominguez – and to hear them discuss Witchboard, special effects, and actual witchcraft, check out the video embedded above!

According to Deadline, Russell intended to go beyond the original Witchboard IP “with a deeper storyline, high intensity scares and imaginative visuals”. As such, the screenplay he wrote with Greg McKay sounds quite different from the original film. Here’s the synopsis: Emily, her fiancé Christian and a group of their friends open an organic café, refurbishing an old carriage house in New Orleans’ French Quarter. But a darkness descends over Emily when she discovers an ancient pendulum board, once used to summon spirits. Christian seeks help for Emily from occult expert Alexander Babtiste, but Babtiste has secrets of his own, knowing the fateful bloodlines that binds them all to the Witchboard. A modern coven of White Witches, a masked ball at Babtiste’s mansion, and the legacy of Naga Soth, the Queen of Witches, are all part of a dangerous game that puts Emily’s very soul at risk. The film stars Madison Iseman of the short-lived I Know What You Did Last Summer TV series, Aaron Dominguez (Only Murders in the Building), Antonia Desplat (Shantaram), Charlie Tahan (Ozark), and Jamie Campbell Bower, who caught a lot of attention for playing the villainous Vecna in season 4 of Stranger Things.

The Witchboard remake (which got a positive reaction from Tenney when he watched it recently) is an A-Nation Media production, and Russell and McKay are producing the film with Kade Vu and Bernie Gewissler. Eric Schiermeyer, Sarah Buxton, John Paul Isham, and Walter Josten serve as executive producers. Although the film is set in New Orleans, it was shot in Montreal.

The original Witchboard, which is one of my all-time favorites, had two sequels that followed different characters and featured different evil spirits. The main connection between the films was the presence of a Ouija board. Russell’s Witchboard seems separate enough from the original that it might as well be considered Witchboard 4, even if it switches out a Ouija board for a pendulum board. And I’m definitely interested in seeing a Witchboard 4 that’s directed by Chuck Russell.

The film has an R rating for strong bloody violence, gore, language, drug content, some sexual content and brief nudity.

Are you going to be watching the Witchboard remake? Take a look at the interviews above, then let us know by leaving a comment below.

It’s finally here! One of the most anticipated and creatively advertised summer features arrives in theatres today. Weapons tells the nightmarish story of what happens when nearly an entire classroom of children disappears into the night. To say too much would not be fair to those of you who have yet to experience the latest from Zach Cregger, who gifted viewers with the fantastic Barbarian. His latest proves that the filmmaker is one of the most exciting modern genre artists.

Aside from the smart script, the spooky concept, and the building tension, Weapons also features a terrific cast. Josh Brolin is exceptionally sympathetic as a father who’s among the families torn apart. As for Julia Garner, the actress brings impressive strength to an incredibly challenging performance. Alden Ehrenreich adds excellent support to the terrific cast. However, there’s one chillingly astounding performance. I’ll let you figure that one out when you see it.

Recently, I spoke to both Julia Garner and Alden Ehrenreich. I also sat down with Mr. Zach Cregger. The filmmaker discussed his impressively original nightmare. As for Julia Garner and Alden Ehrenreich, the two were such a treat to speak to. And if you are still trying to figure out the performance that blew me away, Mr. Cregger did mention it here in the interview. The director opened up about bringing this dark, engaging horror tale to the big screen.

Check out Weapons, opening today. It’s one of the most refreshingly original flicks I’ve seen this year, and it is well worth the hype.

The new body horror feature, Together, currently holds a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Deservedly. In the new film, real-life couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie portray a couple in a relationship that is struggling. Directed by Michael Shanks, an Australian filmmaker known for his television work and shorts, takes on the fascinating study. It’s delightful to see a feature film that doesn’t shy away from the grotesque nature of the story, yet it doesn’t shortchange the audience with flat characters. At a time when we are seeing a slew of the familiar in the multiplex, Together is one of the most satisfying movie experiences of the summer. It’s bold, horrific, and weirdly, kind of a feel-good flick (Check out our review).

I recently had the chance to speak with those involved. We sat down with Mr. Michael Shanks, as well as Dave Franco and Alison Brie. First up, the filmmaker and I discussed exploring this twisted tale with his leads. The discussion led to how his personal relationship experiences bled into the story at hand. Considering that this is his first feature film, it was an assured and satisfying tale with a bit of Cronenberg.

Dave Franco is easily one of my favorite actors to speak with. He is utterly kind and exceedingly talented. Every time we talk, I come out of it with genuine respect for the man. And now, I can easily say that I love chatting with both him and Alison Brie together even more. The two excitedly talked about Franco and even Brie’s love of horror. You’d have to have a serious amount of compatibility to take on roles like this. Considering what the two go through, being glued together.

Together opens July 30th, and it is a fantastic film. You have a young director pulling from experience, and two wonderfully talented actors who bring reality to it all.. Watching this with a packed house at Beyond Fest was thrilling! You could feel the excitement coming from everyone in attendance. And just like the character’s predicament, it sticks with you well after first viewing.

Alien invasion films seem to be having a bit of a comeback (with Spielberg even coming back to the subgenre next year), but they often follow a similar formula. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it’s often either the Independence Day or Invasion of the Body Snatchers approach. Joseph Kahn’s ICK instead gives us a Blob-like lifeform that has been around for decades, slowly permeating the everyday life of everyday people. It can get pretty brutal while still maintaining a fun lightness. You can check out Bumbray’s review of the film HERE.

Stars Brandon Routh, Mena Suvari, Malina Pauli Weissman, and director Joseph Kahn get into the fun and difficulties of making this alien invasion horror/comedy. Routh was a bit more reserved, discussing the big differences between his time in the Superhero world and the world of horror. Mena gets into the fun she had getting to portray a high schooler as well as an ignorant mom. Malina (who I made sure to praise for her wonderful performance as Violet in A Series of Unfortunate Events) makes the shoot sound like an absolute blast. Finally, Joseph gets into how they didn’t quite have a final design for the ICK during filming, with the visual FX not even finalized during its TIFF screening last year. All this and more in the embedded video above!

ICK plot: For almost two decades, a viscous vine-like growth known colloquially as “The Ick” has benignly crept into every nook and cranny of American life while the residents of small town Eastbrook remain blasé about its existence. The exceptions are former high school football star-turned-hapless science teacher Hank (Routh) and his sardonically perceptive student Grace (Weissman) who are thrown together by Grace’s mom Staci’s (Suvari) closely-guarded secret and a mutual suspicion that the Ick is about to unleash some monstrous mayhem.

Last year, an adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Long Walk (which was, like The Running Man and Thinner, published under the pen name Richard Bachman) went into production, with director Francis Lawrence, whose previous credits include Constantine, I Am Legend, Water for Elephants, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Parts 1 and 2, Red SparrowSlumberland, and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, at the helm. Lionsgate will be releasing the film on September 12th. It sees a group of teenage boys compete in an annual contest known as “The Long Walk,” where they must maintain a certain walking speed or get shot. The film had a presence at the San Diego Comic-Con, and today, as JoBlo continues our coverage over at #SDCC2025, our EIC Chris Bumbray caught up with the iconic Mark Hamill and David Jonsson, along with producer Roy Lee, Tut Nyuot, Garrett Wareing, and writer JT Mollner! You can watch the interviews in the embed above.

An adaptation of The Long Walk has been trudging through development hell for decades. At one point, the rights were in the hands of Frank Darabont, who made the King adaptations The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Mist. Then the rights passed over to New Line Cinema, where Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark director André Øvredal was hired to direct the film from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt, whose credits include the two most recent Scream movies. While doing the press rounds for his film The Last Voyage of the Demeter last year, Øvredal revealed that he was no longer involved with The Long Walk, and said not making that movie is one of the big regrets of his life.

Strange Darling writer JT Mollner wrote the screenplay for the version of The Long Walk that has been made. The novel is set in a future dystopian America ruled over by a militaristic dictator, and the titular event is an annual contest in which 100 teenagers must keep a steady pace of at least four miles an hour under strict rules until only one of them is left alive. The winner receives “The Prize”: anything they want for the rest of their life. The story follows Raymond Garraty, a 16-year-old from Pownal, Maine, as well as a group of other teenagers with good, bad, and mysterious intentions.

Cooper Hoffman (Licorice Pizza), David Jonsson (Alien: Romulus), Garrett Wareing (Ransom Canyon), Tut Nyuot (The Witcher: Blood Origin), Charlie Plummer (National Anthem), Ben Wang (American Born Chinese), Jordan Gonzalez (Pretty Little Liars: Summer School), Joshua Odjick (Welcome to Derry), and Roman Griffin Davis (Jojo Rabbit) star in the film alongside Judy Greer (the Halloween and Ant-Man franchises) and Star Wars legend Mark Hamill, who recently worked on another King adaptation called The Life of Chuck.

Lawrence is producing The Long Walk through his company about:blank, alongside Roy Lee, Cameron MacConomy, and Steven Schneider. Meredith Wieck and Erin Jones-Wesley are overseeing for Lionsgate. Filming took place in rural locations throughout the province of Manitoba.

Dracula is one of the most iconic characters in horror, having been adapted countless times on stage and screen. Robert Eggers recently reinvented the timeless tale in Nosferatu, and now another distinct approach to the vampire mythos is coming to the big screen. Based on Joe Hill‘s short story of the same name, Abraham’s Boys: A Dracula Story is a sequel to Bram Stoker’s epistolary novel. Picking up decades later, it is a psychological horror story about Abraham Van Helsing and his family.

The film follows Max and Rudy Van Helsing, who have spent their lives under the strict and overprotective rule of their father, Abraham. Unaware of his dark past, they struggle to understand his paranoia and increasingly erratic behavior. But when they begin to uncover the violent truths behind their father’s history with Dracula, their world unravels, forcing them to confront the terrifying legacy they were never meant to inherit.

I spoke with the cast and creators of Abraham’s Boys: A Dracula Story about the unique approach to the tale. Author Joe Hill talked about the expansion of the story from his written version to the big screen and his appreciation for Natasha Kermani as a director. Kermani talked about tackling her version of Dracula and why it was important to her to bring the character of Mina into the film. Jocelin Donahue spoke about her experience in the horror genre and how she felt about playing Mina as a victim of either PTSD or an absolute monster. Brady Hepner, who previously appeared in the adaptation of Joe Hill’s The Black Phone, talked about the relationship between Max and his father and what it was like playing Van Helsing. Titus Welliver talked about his stoic approach to playing Van Helsing, a character seen countless times on screen, and how he imbued Dutch ancestry into his performance. I was in high school when I Know What You Did Last Summer hit theaters in 1997. Like many teens, I was excited by the sudden revival of the teen slasher genre, spearheaded by Scream and its many sequels. I Know What You Did Last Summer, while never quite on the level of Scream, was a solid enough slasher that made a lasting impression. It catapulted Jennifer Love Hewitt—already popular thanks to Party of Five—into full-fledged “It Girl” status, while Freddie Prinze Jr. and Ryan Phillippe quickly became rising stars. Sarah Michelle Gellar, of course, was already a household name thanks to Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

The sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, flopped, as did the direct-to-video third film, and a poorly received Prime Video series that ignored the original films altogether.

Now, Sony is hoping to revive the franchise with I Know What You Did Last Summer back in theaters this weekend. Whether or not they’re successful in recapturing the magic is up for debate, but the new film certainly benefits from a hot cast. Returning stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are joined by rising talent like Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks), Chase Sui Wonders (The Studio), Tyriq Withers (Him), and more.

We recently had the chance to sit down with much of the cast, along with director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, to talk about their hopes for the franchise’s revival and share their thoughts on the legacy of the original film—some of which they had never seen, as many of the cast members weren’t even born when it was released! There’s a new sequel to the 1997 slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer (watch it HERE) and its 1998 follow-up I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (watch that one HERE) coming our way from director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge), aiming for a July 18 theatrical release. Jennifer Love Hewitt, who played heroine Julie James in the first two films, and Freddie Prinze Jr., who was Julie’s boyfriend Ray Bronson in those films, are reprising their roles – and they’re going to be facing off with a new “Fisherman” killer that’s stalking a whole new cast. One of the new cast members is Madelyn Cline of the Netflix series Outer Banks, and while speaking with JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray, Cline revealed that she had always said she didn’t want to do horror movies… until the I Know What You Did Last Summer opportunity came along. To find out why she broke her “no horror” rule for this project, check out the interview clip in the embed above!

Robinson directed the film from a screenplay by Leah McKendrick (M.F.A.), which has received some rewrites from Robinson and journalist Sam Lansky. McKendrick told Collider a while back that the new sequel will reckon with “some big ideas about hero and villain, right and wrong, how your skeletons come back to haunt you. And in the age of the internet and the age where fame is such a revered concept, the creation of TikTok and social media, who is Julie James in a world where there are no secrets anymore?” McKendrick also said that when she went in to pitch her take to Sony, the most important things they wanted to hear about were “the accident, the event that kicks it off, and who the killer is.

Here’s the new I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel’s synopsis: When five friends inadvertently cause a deadly car accident, they cover up their involvement and make a pact to keep it a secret rather than face the consequences. A year later, their past comes back to haunt them and they’re forced to confront a horrifying truth: someone knows what they did last summer… and is hell-bent on revenge. As one by one the friends are stalked by a killer, they discover this has happened before, and they turn to two survivors of the legendary Southport Massacre of 1997 for help. As you can tell from the synopsis, Hewitt and Prinze are not the leads this time around. They and Cline are joined in the cast by Chase Sui Wonders (Bodies Bodies Bodies), Jonah Hauer-King (The Little Mermaid), Tyriq Withers (Atlanta), Sarah Pidgeon (Tiny Beautiful Things), Billy Campbell (The Rocketeer), model / musician Gabbriette Bechtel (making her feature film acting debut), Austin Nichols (The Day After Tomorrow), Lola Tung (The Summer I Turned Pretty), and Nicholas Alexander Chavez (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story).

Are you looking forward to the new I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel, and are you glad that Madelyn Cline chose to do this horror movie? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Are you familiar with Joe Begos? If not, I highly recommend Christmas Bloody Christmas – check it out immediately. The writer/director/actor is about as close to rock and roll frights as you can get in the modern age. I was lucky, I was able to see his holiday horrors on the big screen. And thanks to Eli Roth and his crowd-funded studio, The Horror Section, frights are going to a wide audience.

Bego’s Jimmy and Stiggs will be hitting 1,500 theatres on August 15. The new flick brings back a little bit of what Peter Jackson brought in Bad Taste and Dead Alive. You can even find some Raimi Evil Dead action. Starring Begos and Matt Mercer, alongside a bunch of aliens, Jimmy and Stiggs is hilariously gory. It’s the kind of movie that you will need to see with an engaged, raucous crowd on opening weekend. Vicious, brutal, messy, and ridiculously charming, it’s a great beginning for Mr. Roth’s latest genre endeavor.

Earlier this week, both Joe and Eli graciously took the time to speak with JoBlo. Happily, I’ve spoken to Mr. Roth several times throughout the years. One thing is for sure: the man has such incredible knowledge about horror. Having a career that spanned from Cabin Fever to Hostel to the recent Thanksgiving, he is an extremely talented fellow. He’s offering genre filmmakers a place to make the kinds of movies that no studio would touch. Horror has always been inventive. And both Roth and Begos seem to understand that the genre can challenge the norm. It takes risks like no other type of storytelling. I’m thrilled at the prospect of The Horror Section. Jimmy and Stiggs is the perfect beginning to an exciting new vision. Our review drops tomorrow – buy your tickets to see it HERE!

Jaws really did a number on the public’s perception of sharks, and their reputation has been struggling ever since. So it’s cool that Dangerous Animals is a shark movie that treats them as they are: creatures who are simply trying to survive. They are not sentient beings who want to jump out of the water and grab humans into the depths, and they only attack when provoked or think a human is something else. So the idea of a serial killer using sharks to kill his victims can shift the villain label away from the sharks, while still letting them in on the killer action, is intriguing. I enjoyed my time with Dangerous Animals (and you can check out my review HERE).

I was lucky enough to sit down with the cast and director of Dangerous Animals to talk all things Shark. I asked stars Jai Courtney, Hassie Harrison, Josh Heuston, and director Sean Byrne what their favorite shark movie is, and, to no one’s surprise, Jaws was a common response. However, I was very excited to get Deep Blue Sea out of Hassie and Josh. I was also fascinated by how long Jai’s Tucker character was operating, and he breaks down how long he thinks Tucker has been feeding these sharks with humans. Courtney was actually very excited about an upcoming shark dive, which we just so happen to have footage of! Our very own Eric Walkuski was actually able to join in on the Shark diving escapades. We’ve got photos below, as well as some great footage in the video above! Expect even more from our shark adventures this week!

2021 saw the release of The Fear Street trilogy on Netflix, and it had a pretty unique streaming schedule, being released back to back for three weeks. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the trilogy, but even four years later, it stands out as an interesting experiment. Now, we’re finally getting another entry, this time in the form of Fear Street: Prom Queen. But don’t worry if you read the book growing up, this one has plenty of surprises in store (my review for the film goes live tomorrow).

I chatted with castmembers Ariana Greenblatt, Ella Rubin, and Rebecca Ablack about their time making Fear Steet: Prom Queen. Ariana breaks down what makes the perfect final girl, while Ella talks about what makes a great slasher villain. And for a bit of fun, I asked the girls what film they would pair with Prom Queen for a fun double feature and I couldn’t agree more with their picks (Ella’s, in particular). Check it out in the video above!

Fear Street: Prom Queen plot: Welcome back to Shadyside. In this next installment of the blood-soaked Fear Street franchise, prom season at Shadyside High is underway and the school’s wolfpack of It Girls is busy with its usual sweet and vicious campaigns for the crown. But when a gutsy outsider puts herself in the running, and the other girls start mysteriously disappearing, the class of ’88 is suddenly in for one hell of a prom night.

FEAR STREET: PROM QUEEN IS STREAMING ON NETFLIX ON MAY 23RD, 2025.
