They are searching for Mar — daughter and sister — who vanished months ago at one of these endless, sleepless parties. Surrounded by electronic music and a raw, unfamiliar sense of freedom, they hand out her photo again and again. Hope is fading, but they push through and follow a group of ravers heading to one last party in the desert. As they venture deeper into the burning wilderness, the journey forces them to confront their own limits.

López is joined in the cast by Bruno Núñez Arjona, Richard Bellamy, Stefania Gadda, Joshua Liam Henderson, Tonin Janvier, and Jade Oukid.

Sirāt was produced by Domingo Corral, Oliver Laxe, Xavi Font, Pedro Almodóvar, Augustín Almodóvar, Esther Garcia, Oriol Maymo, Mani Mortazavi, and Andrea Queralt. A Spanish and French production, the film tells its story in the Spanish, French, English, and Arabic languages.

Lionsgate pushes forward with The Housemaid sequel, titled The Housemaid’s Secret https://www.joblo.com/the-housemaid-sequel/ https://www.joblo.com/the-housemaid-sequel/#respond Tue, 06 Jan 2026 16:43:32 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=878845 Sydney Sweeney's holiday hit has had the studio greenlight the adaptation of the second novel in the Housemaid series.

Lionsgate’s future

Two years ago, Lionsgate had a rough string of flops with films like Borderlands, The Crow remake and Francis Ford Coppola’s infamous Megalopolis not doing big business for the studio. However, this past year also saw releases like Ballerina, The Long Walk and Good Fortune. The studio will soon be taking big swings with a new Rambo and the task of encapsulating the life of Michael Jackson in the (two-part?) biopic Michael. However, Lionsgate also had a little holiday success with The Housemaid, which stars Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried. Now, the studio is going forward with a sequel.

The Housemaid’s Secret

Lionsgate announces that after The Housemaid raked in $133 million in global ticket sales, the studio will now be adapting the second novel in the series, The Housemaid’s Secret, by author Freida McFadden. The Housemaid’s Secret has been in development for the past few months and production is planned to start sometime this year.

According to the press release, screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine, who adapted The Housemaid, will also return to adapt the sequel. The producers on the sequel are set to include Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures, alongside Paul Feig and Laura Fischer of Feig’s Pretty Dangerous Pictures, who are also returning as producers, with Hidden Pictures’ Carly Elter and Alex Young and The Housemaid star Sydney Sweeney will be executive producing. McFadden will also serve as an executive producer. The project is being developed with the intention of director Paul Feig and stars Sydney Sweeney & Michele Morrone making a return.

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair, Adam Fogelson, stated, “It’s clear from both the global box office and from the outpouring on social media that audiences have responded strongly – and audibly – to the totally unique and truly theatrical experience of The Housemaid and want to know what happens next. We believed in these stories from the very beginning, and we are beyond excited to bring the next chapter of Millie’s story to life on-screen in collaboration with our outstanding creative partners, Todd, Paul, Laura, Carly, Alex, and Sydney. The Housemaid’s Secret is another wildly thrilling book in Freida’s series that has captivated readers worldwide, and we look forward to translating it into a similarly rousing and riotous moviegoing experience.”

Director Paul Feig also added, “It’s been thrilling to see audiences around the world fall in love with The Housemaid and the incredible work of our talented cast and crew. We’re lucky that Freida McFadden has already extended Millie’s journey on the page, and that we get to work with Rebecca Sonnenshine and Lionsgate to bring this next story to audiences.”

Why Unlawful Entry Is One of the Most Underrated Thrillers of the 90s https://www.joblo.com/unlawful-entry-what-happened/ https://www.joblo.com/unlawful-entry-what-happened/#respond Mon, 05 Jan 2026 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=878181 What happened to Unlawful Entry? Exploring Jonathan Kaplan's 90s psycho cop thriller that time almost forgot

Mike

The early ’90s were a buffet of sexy danger for thriller fans, and today’s unheralded 1992 man-vs-man-for-all-the-marbles psycho-fest has it all. It’s a creepy stalker movie packed with all-time great actors and a look into what happens when a happy couple has their world wrecked by inner-city crime reaching into their suburban safe haven. This movie is full of sex, horror, and questionable decisions. It even ends with a fistfight in the kitchen that makes the Halloween Ends Laurie vs. Michael Myers throwdown look like a gentle cuddle. Unfortunately, it also involves a scene depicting police brutality during a boiling point in America, something that cast a shadow over the film’s release and nearly buried it forever. This is the story of what happened to Unlawful Entry.

The Simple, Terrifying Premise

There isn’t a ton of information about where the inspiration for Unlawful Entry came from. Maybe it was simply a desire to jump on the thriller boom with a psycho-cop angle. At its most basic level, the movie asks a genuinely unsettling question: Who do you call when the guy who wants your wife is a cop?

That question was explored by writers George Putnam (NYPD Blue, Deadwood), John Katchmer, and Lewis Colick, who would later write thrillers like Judgment Night and Domestic Disturbance. Largo Entertainment, fresh off several entertaining Fox releases including Point Break and The Super, optioned the script in the summer of 1991.

When Suburban Safety Shatters

The film follows Michael Carr, a wealthy but otherwise average guy, and his beautiful yet naive wife Karen. Their suburban bliss is shattered when a home intruder puts a knife to Karen’s throat after Michael fails to restrain him. The intruder flees, but the psychological damage is done. When the police arrive, Officers Pete Davis and Roy Cole take the report. Almost immediately, something feels off about Pete. His stare lingers too long. His interest in Karen is unmistakable. Even his partner senses it. From that moment on, you know this situation is going to spiral.

Unlawful Entry

Horror From Both Sides of the Badge

What makes Unlawful Entry so effective is its two-pronged horror. On one level, it’s about a rage-fueled, mentally unstable cop roaming the streets of Los Angeles at night. On the other, it forces the audience to imagine what they’d do if that cop turned his attention toward their spouse.

To make matters worse, Karen is clearly drawn to Pete’s sad-eyed, misunderstood-cop persona. It’s a nightmare scenario for Michael, who soon finds himself targeted in the most sadistic ways possible. As Pete uses his authority and connections to dismantle Michael’s life piece by piece, Michael is forced to rise to the occasion to save both himself and his wife.

Jonathan Kaplan and a Perfectly Cast Trio

The film was directed by Jonathan Kaplan, best known for The Accused and a long list of music video work. His approach turns Unlawful Entry into a psychological karate kick aimed squarely at the average man’s worst fears.

Casting was crucial, and they nailed it.

Ray Liotta, fresh off Goodfellas and Field of Dreams, plays Officer Pete Davis in one of his most underappreciated performances. His presence is deeply unsettling. Sometimes he doesn’t even do anything, he just watches. His performance evokes echoes of Taxi Driver, Nightcrawler, and even American Psycho. The difference is that this Patrick Bateman has a badge.

Opposite him is Kurt Russell, who deserves serious credit for taking a role many actors would’ve passed on. For much of the movie, Russell plays a man who is powerless, scared, and being outmatched at every turn. But when the time comes, he snaps, and it’s deeply satisfying. Russell perfected this “everyman pushed too far” role in films like Breakdown and Executive Decision, and Unlawful Entry is an early example of how well he could sell it.

Roger Ebert even noted that Russell and Liotta felt like twisted reflections of one another on screen. Their face-off is pitch-perfect; more Cape Fear than traditional stalker fare.

Unlawful Entry

Between them is Madeleine Stowe as Karen, delivering a performance that walks a tricky line. She’s strong, likable, and tragically blind to how dangerous Pete truly is. Stowe had already proven herself in erotic thrillers like Revenge, and here she makes Karen’s denial feel frustrating but believable. When the film shifts from stalking to full-blown slasher territory, Stowe sells the desperation and terror without losing the audience’s sympathy.

The supporting cast is stacked with reliable character actors, including Roger E. Mosley, Ken Lerner, and Deborah Offner, all adding weight to the story.

Real-World Tragedy and an Uncomfortable Parallel

Unlawful Entry was filmed in Los Angeles in 1991, and the production became unintentionally entangled with real-world events. On March 3, 1991, Rodney King was brutally beaten by LAPD officers following a high-speed chase. The footage was released publicly the next day. Unfortunately, Unlawful Entry featured a pivotal scene in which Officer Pete brutally assaults the man who broke into the Carrs’ home, partly to show off in front of Michael. As the Rodney King case unfolded and the 1992 LA riots erupted just two months before the film’s release, the similarities became impossible to ignore.

The director and producers heavily edited the scene, and the cast repeatedly emphasized in interviews that the film was intended purely as entertainment. Thankfully, audiences seemed to understand this context, and the film was able to survive rather than be erased.

Chaos on Set and a Reworked Ending

Behind the scenes, the production was just as intense as the movie itself. Liotta described Kaplan as “an intense little dude,” while Russell affectionately referred to him as “a frantic Santa Claus.” Stowe even admitted that while she and Liotta barely spoke off-camera, she found herself genuinely drawn to him while in character, a strange but telling detail.

The film’s ending was rewritten multiple times, leading to confusion even among the cast during filming. While some critics felt the final act was rushed, the chaotic energy actually works in the movie’s favor. The final confrontation between Michael and Pete is raw, frantic, and vicious, culminating in a kitchen fight that feels earned after all the psychological torment.

Unlawful Entry

Yes, Even the Cat Matters

One unforgettable element of the film is the Carrs’ cat, Tiny, which was played by three different cats during production. The cat consistently prefers Pete over Michael, subtly undermining the old horror-movie idea that animals can sense evil. It’s a small but clever touch that adds another layer of humiliation and unease for Michael.

Even after everything Michael endures to save his family, the cat still chooses Karen over him. It’s darkly funny, strangely human, and maybe proof that I’ve watched this movie too many times.

Music, Release, and Legacy

Legendary composer James Horner scored the film, though not without some creative friction. Kaplan, whose father was composer Sol Kaplan, had very specific ideas about the music’s tone. The result is an underrated score that feels like a traditional thriller theme with just enough eerie restraint to avoid tipping the audience off too early.

Unlawful Entry hit theaters on June 26, 1992, opening in second place at the box office. It grossed over $10 million its first weekend and went on to earn $57 million domestically against a $23 million budget. A solid success. Critical reception was generally positive, with many reviewers praising Liotta’s performance while acknowledging some stretches in believability.

Final Verdict

Even if it doesn’t have the name recognition of Basic Instinct, Unlawful Entry remains one of the most entertaining, rewatchable, and well-acted thrillers from the golden age of the genre. And that is what happened to Unlawful Entry.

Chris

You ever watch a movie and, by the time it’s over, just know that one of the people in it—someone you’d never heard of before—is going to become a major star?

That happened to me when I was fourteen years old and saw Primal Fear.

A mid-level legal thriller released in early spring 1996, the film was never meant to be much more than a programmer for Paramount Pictures. Instead, it became a classic—largely because it marked the screen debut of Edward Norton. His performance made him a star overnight, earned him an Oscar nomination, and propelled him into two more high-profile supporting roles before the year was out. By the time 1997 rolled around, Norton was a bona fide movie star.

So how does a complete unknown deliver a career-changing performance?

In some ways, you can thank John Grisham—though Primal Fear has nothing to do with him directly. The film is based on a novel by William Diehl, but it never would have been made if legal thrillers hadn’t been all the rage in the early-to-mid 1990s.

Grisham’s The Firm became a massive blockbuster starring Tom Cruise, who had already scored with A Few Good Men. Its success triggered a gold rush of courtroom thrillers. Many were adapted from Grisham novels and many became hits, including The Pelican Brief and Joel Schumacher’s The Client.

Today, a film with the pedigree of Primal Fear would likely be positioned as Oscar bait—or more likely turned into a prestige streaming series. In 1996, though, a twisty legal thriller was money in the bank.

From William Diehl’s Novel to the Big Screen

With most of Grisham’s novels already optioned, other legal writers had their moment. William Diehl, a former photojournalist, was already in his sixties when Primal Fear was published in 1993. He’d previously had a hit adaptation with Sharky’s Machine in 1981, directed by and starring Burt Reynolds.

Primal Fear was a different beast. The story centers on Martin Vail, a bad-boy defense attorney who takes on the case of Aaron Stampler, a seemingly simple altar boy accused of brutally murdering Chicago Archbishop Richard Rushman. What looks like an open-and-shut case quickly becomes something far more complicated.

Vail takes the case largely for the publicity—and for the chance to go head-to-head with his ex-girlfriend Janet, the ambitious prosecutor handling the case.

Richard Gere’s Perfect Comeback Role

Martin Vail was written as a man in his forties, making the role a perfect fit for Richard Gere, who was in the midst of his “mature sex symbol” phase.

After early superstardom with American Gigolo and An Officer and a Gentleman, Gere’s career had cratered in the late ’80s. He rebounded in 1990 with Pretty Woman and delivered one of his strongest performances in Internal Affairs. Still, a string of misfires followed—particularly ill-advised period films. His miscasting as Lancelot in First Knight didn’t help.

Primal Fear was exactly what he needed. Paramount, under Sherry Lansing, backed him, and Gere slid effortlessly into Vail—a slick, egotistical lawyer who never quite crosses into sleaze.

He was surrounded by a killer ensemble: Laura Linney, John Mahoney, Terry O’Quinn, Frances McDormand, André Braugher, Alfre Woodard, Steven Bauer, and Maura Tierney. And yet, every one of them—including Gere—would be blown off the screen by an actor with zero prior screen credits.

The Performance That Changed Everything (Spoilers Ahead)

If you haven’t seen Primal Fear, spoiler warning.

Throughout the film, Aaron Stampler appears to be a traumatized victim suffering from dissociative identity disorder. His violent alter ego, “Roy,” seems responsible for the crime—a byproduct of horrific lifelong abuse.

Then comes the final scene.

A slip of the tongue reveals the truth: Aaron never existed. Roy is the real personality. He isn’t mentally ill—he’s evil. He killed the Archbishop because he wanted to. He murdered another victim simply for kicks. The stammer, the innocence, the vulnerability—it was all an act.

That reveal made the role legendary.

The Role Every Young Actor Wanted

The part was initially offered to Leonardo DiCaprio, who turned it down after What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. Will Wheaton later blamed passing on the role—choosing acting school instead—for derailing his adult career.

Pedro Pascal has said it was his first audition. Matt Damon desperately wanted it, and losing the role helped motivate him and Ben Affleck to write Good Will Hunting. Ironically, Damon would later star in The Rainmaker, another Grisham adaptation, which proved far less impactful.

Norton, an unknown, was billed sixth. Today, he shares top billing with Gere on every re-release.

A Perfectly Crafted Thriller

Norton’s performance is the headline, but Primal Fear works because everything around it is strong.

The script is sharp. Diehl’s novel is gripping. Director Gregory Hoblit—making his feature debut after TV work on L.A. Law and NYPD Blue—keeps the tension tight. Cinematographer Michael Chapman brings a moody, polished look, and James Newton Howard’s score became a trailer staple.

The film’s signature needle drop, the haunting Portuguese ballad “Canção do Mar” by Dulce Pontes, later became iconic in its own right.

Box Office Success and a Star Is Born

Released in April 1996—a traditionally quiet month—the film’s $56 million domestic gross was considered excellent. Worldwide, it topped $100 million on a $30 million budget.

Its real explosion came on VHS and cable, as word spread about Edward Norton. By year’s end, he’d landed The People vs. Larry Flynt and Everyone Says I Love You, earned an Oscar nomination, and become one of Hollywood’s most sought-after young actors.

What followed—American History XFight ClubRounders—cemented his legacy.

Why Primal Fear Still Matters

Rewatching Primal Fear today is a reminder of how rare it is for talent and opportunity to collide so perfectly. Edward Norton didn’t just break out—he announced himself.

It’s one of the great star-making performances in modern cinema, and a reminder that sometimes, one role really can change everything.

Netflix has released a new trailer for the Joe Carnahan thriller The Rip, which stars the famous best friends from Boston — Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. In the trailer, loyalties become blurry and a team of cops find themselves not knowing who to trust when they stumble upon millions of dollar in cash during a rip mission. Carnahan directs from a script he wrote, which came from a story by himself and Michael McGrale. The film is produced by Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Dani Bernfeld and Luciana Damon with Kevin Halloran and Michael Joe for Artists Equity on as executive producers.

Here is the plot of The Rip courtesy of Netflix: “Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on.” The supporting cast includes Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Kyle Chandler, Scott Adkins, and more. Previously marketed as RIP (as in “rest in peace”), The Rip (as in something you pull from a crime scene) is directed by Joe Carnahan, making it a Smokin’ Aces reunion for the director and Affleck. It’s probably more notable for most because it’s another reteaming for Affleck and Damon, who most recently appeared onscreen together in 2023’s Air.

Director Joe Carnahan, whose credits include Narc, The GreySmokin’ Aces and The A-Team, shared that he was inspired by a friend from Miami Dade PD’s Tactical Narcotics division after a real-life rip mission. Carnahan explained, “I went through an unbelievably bad breakup, and it was really fraught with a lot of pain and anger. And in the weirdest way, man, it just reconstituted—I kept thinking of Back to the Future II, like give me trash and I’ll create fusion. I’ve never been good at therapy, and probably because there’s something deeply wrong with me that I’m immune to it. But I found this to be very therapeutic, and that script just kind of flew out of me.”

The Rip is also something of a business venture for Affleck and Damon, as it comes courtesy of their Artists Equity production company, which the boys launched in late 2022. Their first release was the aforementioned Air, which earned two Golden Globe nominations in the Musical or Comedy category. In addition to The Rip, Artists Equity also has Bill Condon’s Kiss of the Spider Woman on the calendar for an awards season run and has already seen the release of the Affleck-led The Accountant 2.

The Rip releases on Netflix on January 16, 2026.

Due to a political conflict in Venezuela, Leonardo DiCaprio was a surprise no-show at last night’s Palm Springs International Film Awards. However, rather than sitting out the celebration entirely, he recorded a message for the crowd that offered his thanks alongside an impassioned message about the importance of movie-making and theatrical experiences.

“I’m stuck on the East Coast,” DiCaprio said at the top of his message. “I wish I was there to celebrate with all of you. I’m truly grateful to be a part of it even from the distance.”

DiCaprio addresses PTA at the Palm Springs ceremony

DiCaprio received the Desert Palm Achievement Award during the ceremony. At that point, he addressed his One Battle After Another director, Paul Thomas Anderson, saying, “Thank you for inviting all of us into something bold and original, for never settling and for trusting the process enough to let the work become what it needed to be.”

DiCaprio recalls his early theater-going experiences

Seizing the moment, DiCaprio delved deep into his memory, recalling the days when his father would take him to the cinema, his first real exposure to movie magic. “My father used to take me to the movies at the Vista Theater in Los Angeles. I lived four blocks away and it’s now home to one of the last VistaVision projectors on earth. It was my neighborhood theater, it was where I first felt the power of cinema, and sitting in that dark room with my father, watching something bigger than myself, I realized how deeply movies can affect all of us.”

DiCaprio urges audiences to keep theaters alive

As if by an act of fate, Anderson shot One Battle After Another using VistaVision, “not out of nostalgia, but out of a belief, a belief in scale and texture, and in the idea that movies are still meant to be experienced together in a theater. Right now, that belief matters more than ever. Original films are harder to make and harder to protect, but movies still matter. Not content, but cinema. Stories made by people meant to be shared in a dark room in a communal experience.”

Going to bat for theatrical experiences is a common trend (for lack of a more apt term) in Hollywood, ever since the COVID-19 pandemic devastated theater attendance in 2020. While audiences continue to flock to theaters for select theatrical experiences, Hollywood and theater owners continue to struggle to put asses in seats and convince people not to wait until films hit streaming services. Celebrities like Tom Cruise and Liam Neeson have implored people to support the art of filmmaking by attending theatrical screenings, but it’s an uphill battle. With any luck, DiCaprio’s words will reach the ears of those on the fence about using their hard-earned cash for theatrical experiences, convincing them to support the industry and keep it thriving.

]]>
Earlier this month, a thriller called Widow, based on an upcoming AMP Comics graphic novel, went into production in North Carolina – and director Don Handfield managed to assemble an impressive cast for this film. The cast is headed up by Lou Diamond Phillips (Young Guns), Jackie Earle Haley (Little Children), and Abigail Cowen (Fate: The Winx Saga). They are joined by Jason Schmidt (The Outsiders on Broadway), Nadine Velazquez (My Name Is Earl), Jose Pablo Cantillo (Mayor of Kingstown), Rob Morgan (Stranger Things), Joseph Raymond Lucero (Mayans MC), and PJ Sosko (The Blacklist).

Synopsis

Handfield, who is known for producing The Founder and co-creating History’s Knightfall, wrote Widow with Joshua Malkin. The plot synopsis: Desperate and on the run with her infant son, a young mother races across empty highways and forgotten truck stops, hunted by ruthless cartel enforcers and relentless federal agents. But in the shadows between predator and prey, something far more terrifying is stirring—and nothing in this story is what it seems.”

Handfield is also producing the film for AMP Comics, alongside Lauren Vilchik of Walker Street Entertainment, Eshan Kamarsu of Tambura Pictures, and Chase McNaughton of Frigate Filmworks.

Statements

Handfield told The Hollywood Reporter, “This is a film that weaponizes your assumptions. The less you know going in, the more devastating the experience.” The Hollywood Reporter article notes that “the producers tease that like recent hits such as Barbarian and Strange Darling, this feature will shift gears mid-way through in an unexpected way.

Vilchik said that, “What drew me to Widow is the character at its center. She’s a fully dimensional woman fighting for survival, and her choices force the audience into impossible moral territory. That complexity—and ferocity—is rare.” Kamarsu added, “This is a film people will be talking about—and debating—long after the credits roll.

Widow sounds interesting to me and I’m very curious to learn more about this terrifying, stirring thing that will cause a surprising mid-way shifting of gears. I just don’t want to learn about it until I’m watching the movie. As with Barbarian and Strange Darling, I will be trying to avoid spoilers for this one.

Nearly three years have gone by since it was announced that Atomic Monster, the production company headed up by genre regular James Wan, would be teaming with Amazon Studios to produce a psychological thriller series based on the best-selling novel 56 Days, by Catherine Ryan Howard (pick up a copy HERE). Now, we finally know when we’re going to have the chance to watch the show, as it has been revealed that the series will premiere on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. Along with that announcement comes the unveiling of some promotional artwork, which can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Creative Team and Source Material

Lisa Zwerling and Karyn Usher, who were behind the Starz drama The Rook, wrote the adaptation and serve as executive producers alongside Sandrine Gros d’Aillon, Wan, and Atomic Monster’s Michael Clear and Rob Hackett. Danielle Bozzone oversees the series for Atomic Monster. Howard is a co-executive producer. The first two episodes of the adaptation were directed by Alethea Jones, whose credits include episodes of Evil, Shining Vale, Mrs. Davis, and Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies.

Written by Howard during the pandemic lockdown in Dublin back in 2020, the book 56 Days is set during that very same lockdown. It tells the story of an intense, erotic romance that turns deadly. It follows two young professionals, striking out on their own in a new city, who are entangled quickly in a charged relationship that leads to a powerful intimacy that is soon cracked open by their secrets … and to murder. Here’s the book description: No one even knew they were together. Now one of them is dead. 56 DAYS AGO: Ciara and Oliver meet in a supermarket queue in Dublin and start dating the same week COVID-19 reaches Irish shores. 35 DAYS AGO: When lockdown threatens to keep them apart, Oliver suggests they move in together. Ciara sees a unique opportunity for a relationship to flourish without the scrutiny of family and friends. Oliver sees a chance to hide who — and what — he really is. TODAY: Detectives arrive at Oliver’s apartment to discover a decomposing body inside. Can they determine what really happened, or has lockdown created an opportunity for someone to commit the perfect crime?

Series Adaptation

The TV series (which was once going by the title Obsession, but has since reverted to the 56 Days title) is not set during the pandemic lockdown, but it does follow Oliver and Ciara, who, after meeting randomly in a supermarket, fall for each other fast, and dangerously hard. Fifty-six days later, homicide investigators arrive at Oliver’s apartment to find an unidentified body—brutally murdered and intentionally decomposed. Did he kill her? Did she kill him? Intercutting between an intense single day in the present investigation and the twisted trajectory of the young lovers’ affair in the past, the series is both a unique crime story and a riveting, sexy, psychological thriller.

Dove Cameron, Avan Jogia, Karla Souza, and Dorian Missick star. As Prime Video puts it, “56 Days features a star-studded ensemble cast led by Dove Cameron and Avan Jogia as Ciara Wyse and Oliver Kennedy, showcasing the chemistry and building tension that drive this toxic love affair. Rounding out the ensemble are Karla Souza as detective Lee Reardon and Dorian Missick as detective Karl Connolly, who anchor the present-day investigation with gripping performances that keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

Apple TV+ has canceled Jason Clarke’s The Last Frontier after one season https://www.joblo.com/the-last-frontier-canceled/ https://www.joblo.com/the-last-frontier-canceled/#respond Sun, 21 Dec 2025 20:00:00 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=877374 Unfortunately, the Apple TV+ thriller series The Last Frontier, starring Jason Clarke, is getting canceled after only one season.

Before the year comes to a close, Apple TV+ is clearing a series from its calendar. According to reports, The Last Frontier, starring Jason Clarke (Mudbound, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Zero Dark Thirty), is being canceled after one season. The thriller series features Clarke as Frank Remnick, a U.S. marshal patrolling the desolate stretches of Alaska who comes under attack after discovering a prison transport plane crash. As inmates from the wreck run free, Remnick must fight to survive the ordeal.

“Tasked with protecting the town he’s vowed to keep safe, [Remnick] begins to suspect the crash wasn’t an accident, but the first step of a well-crafted plan with far-reaching and devastating implications,” reads the official logline for the series.

What did we think of The Last Frontier?

One person who might be upset by today’s news is JoBlo’s own Alex Maidy, who saw The Last Frontier as having more to offer if Apple could justify the expense. In his review, Alex said, The Last Frontier is a welcome first season of what should be an ongoing series. Nothing may be sure when a show costs as much as they do these days, but Apple’s deep pockets could have us returning to the wilds of Alaska for additional thrill rides led by Jason Clarke, Haley Bennett, and Dominic Cooper. There are definitely moments in this series that stretch credulity, but they are done in the service of a fun story that hits the right notes. I would have liked Sam Hargrave to direct more episodes and inject the same caliber of action that we see in the premiere episode, but I am happy with what we got. The Last Frontier manages to take a part of the world many of us have never visited and makes it seem simultaneously foreign and familiar. This is a fun show that is well worth tuning in to week after week.”

Who are the creative forces behind The Last Frontier?

Jon Bokenkamp and Richard D’Ovidio created The Last Frontier and served as executive producers alongside director Sam Hargrave. In addition to Jason Clarke, the show also starred Dominic Cooper, Haley Bennett, Simone Kessell, Dallas Goldtooth, Tait Blum, and Alfre Woodard.

Are you disappointed to hear that The Last Frontier is canceled? Let us know in the comments section below.

When writers put “Untitled” on their title pages, it’s just a placeholder. Eventually, pretty much everything gets a proper title. For example, Cameron Crowe once wrote a script called Untitled, and the movie he made out of it is known as Almost Famous. But there are exceptions to every rule, and sometimes things even happen in a way that’s completely opposite from the norm. That’s what happened when Jamie Napoli and Joshua Paul Johnson wrote a comedy thriller script together. They put Getaway on the title page – but as the project made its way through production, it lost its title and got a new one that makes it sound like it never had a title in the first place. Directed by American Pie legend Jason Biggs, who also stars, the comedy thriller Napoli and Johnson wrote is making its way out into the world as Untitled Home Invasion Romance. The finished film is set to receive a digital release from Paramount’s Republic Pictures on January 27th – and with that date just a few weeks away, a trailer has arrived online. You can watch it in the embed above.

Cast and Synopsis

Biggs’s co-stars include Meaghan Rath (Hawaii Five-0), Anna Konkle (PEN15), Justin H. Min (Beef), and Arturo Castro (Broad City).

The story Napoli and Johnson crafted in their Untitled Home Invasion Romance script has the following synopsis: With his marriage on the rocks, Kevin whisks his wife Suzie away on a romantic getaway with a wildly misguided plan: fake a break-in and play the hero. But when things spiral and someone turns up dead, Kevin finds himself at the center of a murder investigation, with lies piling up faster than the alibis.

The production company behind the film is Motion Picture Corporation of America. Brad Krevoy, Charles Cohen, Jimmy Philémond-Montout, and David Anselmo are the producers.

What did you think of the Untitled Home Invasion Romance trailer? Will you be watching this comedy thriller next month? Let us know by leaving a comment below. I didn’t have to watch the trailer to be sold on this one; all it took was the “home invasion romance” description and the involvement of Jason Biggs. So I guess calling the movie Untitled Home Invasion Romance was a good move after all.

Netflix to develop a series adaptation of Liz Moore’s The God of the Woods https://www.joblo.com/the-god-of-the-woods-netflix-series/ https://www.joblo.com/the-god-of-the-woods-netflix-series/#respond Wed, 17 Dec 2025 20:49:08 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=876873 After adapting Long Bright River for Peacock, Netflix is bringing Liz Moore's The God of the Woods to its platform as a series.

As studios close the books on 2025 and look toward the future, Netflix is ready to do business with author Liz Moore for a series adaptation of her 2024 novel The God of the Woods. Per the deal, Moore (Long Bright River) will partner with Liz Hannah (The Girl from PlainvilleMindhunterThe Post) to co-showrun, write, and executive produce the series. In addition to Moore and Hannah, Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty will executive produce for Original Film.

“We love making TV and can’t wait to bring The God of the Woods to life with our partners at Sony and Netflix,” Moore and Hannah said in a statement. “We hope everyone falls in love (and hate) with these characters as much as we have.”

What is The God of the Woods About?

The God of the Woods is a multigenerational drama series set in the Adirondacks. It explores the Van Laar family’s dark secrets, class tensions, and the mysterious disappearance of 13-year-old Barbara Van Laar from her family’s summer camp — in the wake of an earlier family tragedy that may be related. As the past and present collide, the Van Laars’ wealth and influence unravel, revealing the damaging consequences of privilege and the abuse of power.”

Who Else Enjoys Moore’s Novels?

Adding to the novel’s appeal, President Barack Obama selected The God of the Woods as one of his favorite novels of the year. Moreover, Swifties noticed Taylor listening to the audiobook version of Moore’s best-selling novel in her “End of an Era ” docuseries, released on Disney+ last week. Moore’s work is in high demand following the series adaptation of her novel Long Bright River, starring Amanda Seyfried, Nicholas Pinnock, Ashleigh Cummings, Callum Vinson, and more.

What’s Moore’s Long Bright River About?

If you’re interested in checking out Long Bright River, here’s a synopsis for the novel, courtesy of Amazon:

In a Philadelphia neighborhood rocked by the opioid crisis, two once-inseparable sisters find themselves at odds. One, Kacey, lives on the streets in the vise of addiction. The other, Mickey, walks those same blocks on her police beat. They don’t speak anymore, but Mickey never stops worrying about her sibling.

Then Kacey disappears, suddenly, at the same time that a mysterious string of murders begins in Mickey’s district, and Mickey becomes dangerously obsessed with finding the culprit–and her sister–before it’s too late.

Alternating its present-day mystery with the story of the sisters’ childhood and adolescence, Long Bright River is at once heart-pounding and heart-wrenching: a gripping suspense novel that is also a moving story of sisters, addiction, and the formidable ties that persist between place, family, and fate.

Vices can be a gift and a curse, depending on your level of indulgence. While some escapes can numb the pain, others become poison the longer you lean on them for support. It takes honesty and fortitude to admit there’s a problem, and drawing the line isn’t always as simple as saying no. Recovery requires help, guidance, and support. The right inspiration, even the right person, can help guide you through the darkest of addictions, but you have to want it. In the upcoming Apple Original Films project, Sponsor, Academy Award nominee John C. Reilly (Stan & Ollie, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story) joins Jason Segel (Shrinking, Dispatches from Elsewhere) for a psychological thriller that takes a hard look at dependency.

What is Sponsor about?

Based on an original idea co-written by Segel and his Shrinking collaborator James Ponsoldt, Sponsor watches as Peter (Segel) makes a big mistake when he gets behind the wheel after partying too hard. A terrible accident leaves him with a choice: prison or a recovery program. Convinced he doesn’t have a drinking problem, he begrudgingly shows up to his first meeting and searches for a sponsor. In walks the no-nonsense, charismatic yet enigmatic Jerry, whom Peter becomes convinced is the answer to his prayers.

Reilly will play Jerry, the sponsor, while Segel portrays Peter.

Sponsor will shoot in California, with the project originating from Apple Studios and produced by Platinum Dunes. Segel and Ponsoldt produce alongside Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, and Alex Ginno for Platinum Dunes.

What else is John C. Reilly working on?

Reilly recently played former Lakers owner Jerry Buss in HBO’s Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, as well as Archibald Harold Holmes in the music video for Jack White’s song of the same name. Reilly’s upcoming projects include the David Leitch-helmed heist film How to Rob a Bank, also starring Zoë Kravitz, Nicholas Hoult, Christian Slater, Anna Sawai, Pete Davidson, Sam Lerner, and Rhenzy Feliz; Dara Van Dusen’s A Prayer for the Dying; and Alex Prager’s horror thriller Dreamquil. Set in 1879s Wisconsin, Dusen’s film focuses on a sheriff who faces a deadly threat, forcing him to choose between his family and defending the community that gave him a second chance. Meanwhile, Dreamquil revolves around a woman who embarks on a virtual wellness retreat to get her life back on track, but with nightmarish consequences.

What do you think about the concept for Sponsor? Will John C. Reilly and Jason Segel make a good pairing? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Bob Odenkirk is anything but Normal in the action-packed teaser trailer for Ben Wheatley’s new bullet-chewing crime thriller https://www.joblo.com/normal-teaser-trailer/ https://www.joblo.com/normal-teaser-trailer/#respond Mon, 15 Dec 2025 16:23:55 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=876507 Bob Odenkirk embraces his inner "every man" for an off-the-wall action crime thriller in Ben Wheatley's Normal teaser trailer.

After kicking ass and taking names as the one-man-army Hutch Mansell in Nobody and Nobody 2, Bob Odenkirk is ready to embrace his “every man” energy again for Normal, an upcoming action crime thriller from filmmaker Ben Wheatley (Free Fire, Sightseers) and Magnolia Pictures.

What’s Normal about?

Ben Wheatley directs Normal. His credits include Down Terrace, Kill List, Sightseers, A Field in England, High-Rise, Free Fire; Happy New Year, Colin Burstead; Rebecca, In the EarthMeg 2: The Trench, the upcoming BULK, and the six-episode series Generation Z. The story finds Odenkirk playing Ulysses, a lawman who is thrust into the temporary role of the sheriff for the small sleepy town Normal after the previous one’s untimely death. When an out-of-town couple robs the town’s bank, Ulysses arrives on the scene to find that the town is hiding much more sinister, deep-seated secrets under its surface, and everyone – from the bartender to the priest – is in on it. And now Ulysses, who’s up till now focused only on running away from the demons of his past, must uncover the full extent of this criminal conspiracy. Normal has been given an R rating for strong bloody violence and language.

What goes on in the new teaser trailer?

In today’s teaser trailer for Normal, we go on a cozy ride-along with Odenkirk’s Ulysses. As he strolls through the quiet town, Ulysses is greeted by friendly faces, crooked smiles, and the scent of warm coffee in the winter air. However, when things take a turn for the unexpected, Ulysses must set aside his folksy nature to uncover the truth of a violent crime invading the unassuming city.

What did we think of Normal?

JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray recently had the opportunity to watch the film at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival and gave it a rating of 7/10 in his review. Bumbray said it was precisely what he wanted from a Bob Odenkirk-led action film. “It’s packed with carnage, with him in top form as both action star and leading man. His chemistry with [Jess] McLeod is especially strong, and if a follow-up were to focus on the two of them as a team, I’d be first in line to check it out.”

What do you think of today’s teaser trailer for Normal? Let us know in the comments section below.

Top 10 Killer Dolls: From M3Gan to Chucky and beyond! https://www.joblo.com/lists-top-10-killer-dolls/ Fri, 12 Dec 2025 20:00:00 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/top-10-killer-dolls/ M3GAN gave us a new great killer doll movie, but who are the other icons of the genre? Here's a list of the best of the best.

The post Top 10 Killer Dolls: From M3Gan to Chucky and beyond! appeared first on JoBlo.

The M3GAN makers think their AI doll could easily defeat Chucky, so a team-up with Annabelle would be more interesting
Cody

There’s just something inherently creepy about dolls, and filmmakers have had a lot of fun over the decades crafting horror stories around that creepiness. Audiences clearly love to see it, otherwise there wouldn’t be so many creepy / killer doll movies out there. So to celebrate this sub-genre, we decided to put together a list of some of the all-time best killer dolls. Not killer doll movies, but specific dolls. Here is our list of the Top 10 Killer Dolls!

Annabelle

ANNABELLE (THE CONJURING UNIVERSE)

This is a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” list entry if there ever was one. If we don’t include Annabelle – who scared people so badly in the opening scene of The Conjuring, she got her own spinoff franchise – there will be a lot of fans asking, “How could you leave Annabelle off a top 10 doll list?” If we do include her, genre fans will also point out that Annabelle doesn’t actually kill anybody. It’s the demon she hangs out with that’s the problem. But she is so popular, we’re forced to include her anyway. She may not walk around slashing up victims with a knife, but when she’s around, people are still in mortal danger.

Top 10 Killer Dolls Dolly Dearest

DOLLY DEAREST (1991)

Sure, Dolly Dearest is a blatant Child’s Play ripoff… but it has such an an oppressively dark tone and features evil dolls (inhabited by an evil force called the Sanzia devil child) that are so ugly and creepy, that I found Dolly Dearest too unnerving to sit through when I was a kid. Despite the fact that I was already a Chucky fan by the time I tried to watch this one. So this little knife-wielding knockoff earns a place on the list.

Triloquist Top 10 Killer Dolls

DUMMY (TRILOQUIST – 2008)

Coming to us from director Mark Jones, the director of the original Leprechaun (and the less popular Rumpelstiltskin), Triloquist is an awful movie… but it’s one of those movies that is so bad, it can be highly entertaining to watch once or twice, if you’re in the right mindset. The small killer here is Dummy, a wooden ventriloquist dummy who seems to have somehow been imbued with a life of his own… and not only is he homicidal, he’s also quite horny. He hits the road with the trashy, bloodthirsty Angelina and the developmentally disabled Norbert for a cross-country killing spree, and Jones was clearly endeavoring to make the movie as sleazy and appalling as possible, packing it with wildly inappropriate dialogue. Watching Triloquist is quite an experience.

Pin

PIN (1988)

Technically, the life-size anatomy dummy Pin is not a killer. He’s just an inanimate object. But that doesn’t keep him from being an intensely creepy presence throughout the film. Terry O’Quinn plays Dr. Linden, who uses ventriloquism to have the dummy interact with young patients and even teach his own son and daughter life lessons. This is a terrible idea, because it convinces the son that Pin is a living being – especially after he witnesses his father’s nurse using the dummy as a sex toy. That also gives him sexual hang-ups, which leads to him taking an unhealthy interest in his sister’s sex life. Before you know it, people are getting killed. Pin himself isn’t the killer, but he’s at the heart of a well-made, twisted psychological thriller.

Magic Anthony Hopkins

FATS (MAGIC – 1978)

I’ll put Fats back-to-back with Pin because they’re sort of in the same boat. Based on a novel by legendary screenwriter William Goldman and directed by Sir Richard Attenborough, Magic is a psychological thriller that stars Sir Anthony Hopkins as struggling magician Corky, who has a tumultuous relationship with his ventriloquist dummy Fats. Is Fats the mean, possessed, potentially homicidal little bastard he appears to be, or is Corky insane? Well, check the movie out and see what you think.

M3GAN

M3GAN (2023)

Like Annabelle, M3GAN is a James Wan production – but while the Annabelle doll isn’t actually a killer, there’s no confusion over whether or not the AI-powered robot doll M3GAN is a killer. She’s supposed to be a little girl’s best friend, but she’s not wired quite right, turning her protectiveness into a homicidal rampage. M3GAN can do the latest trendy TikTok dance to entertain the youngsters, then she racks up a body count when she’s not showing off her moves. She proved to be so popular that the filmmakers decided to make her an action comedy heroine in the sequel… but audiences weren’t so thrilled by M3GAN 2.0.

Demonic Toys

BABY OOPSY (DEMONIC TOYS FRANCHISE)

I haven’t seen Imaginary as of this writing, but I’ve seen images of that teddy bear Chauncey, and I’ve also seen images of Chauncey where he has transformed into a hulking beast. It’s a familiar look, because I’ve seen this exact same thing done before, in the 1992 Full Moon classic Demonic Toys! That film features a teddy bear called Grizzly Teddy, which also turns into a large monster. He’s awesome, but the star of the Demonic Toys franchise – and the only toy that would be referred to as a doll – is Baby Oopsy, who has gone on to cause all sorts of trouble over the course of several movies.

Trilogy of Terror Zuni Top 10 Killer Dolls

ZUNI DOLL (TRILOGY OF TERROR – 1975)

There are three horror tales packed into the anthology Trilogy of Terror (thus the title), each one directed by Dan Curtis and based on a story by Richard Matheson. You have to wait until the third segment to be introduced to the tiny terror known as He Who Kills… but it’s worth the wait. This little guy is a total maniac who relentlessly pursues a young woman played by Karen Black throughout her apartment. This part of the movie proved to be so popular, the Zuni doll was brought back for a sequel story in Trilogy of Terror II twenty-one years later.

Blade Puppet Master 2 Top 10 Killer Dolls

BLADE (PUPPET MASTER FRANCHISE)

There are a whole lot of killer dolls in the Puppet Master franchise, and each one of them has their adoring fans – which is why this is the biggest franchise on this list, currently standing strong at fifteen entries (and a sixteenth in development). But the most popular puppet of the bunch is Blade, who has a knife for one hand and a hook for the other. In some movies he’s a villain, in others he’s a hero, it all depends on who his master is at the time. He has slashed his way through humans (including a number of Nazis), battled tiny demons, and even faced off with the Demonic Toys. He usually has some puppet pals backing him up, but a few years ago, he even got a solo movie.

Child's Play 2

CHUCKY (CHILD’S PLAY FRANCHISE)

There are other popular killer dolls out there, but it’s not likely that any are ever going to surpass the popularity of Chucky… and, of course, we’re talking about the original Chucky here, although the Child’s Play remake was surprisingly good. A combination of impressive special effects, wild stories concocted by Don Mancini, and incredible vocal performances from Brad Dourif have made Chucky an iconic character we’ve been fascinated to watch through several feature films and now multiple seasons of a TV series as well.

Poltergeist Top 10 Killer Dolls

HONORABLE MENTION: CLOWN DOLL (POLTERGEIST – 1982)

We had to include this one as an honorable mention. The Clown Doll doesn’t kill anyone; in fact, no one is killed in Poltergeist… but the Clown Doll certainly made an attempt to kill little Robbie, and it’s been scaring the hell out of viewers for over 40 years now.

Amanda Seyfried dives into an adapation of Carl Hiaasen’s Skinny Dip novel at Prime Video https://www.joblo.com/skinny-dip-amanda-seyfried/ https://www.joblo.com/skinny-dip-amanda-seyfried/#respond Thu, 11 Dec 2025 20:46:29 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=876037 After terrorizing Sydney Sweeney in The Housemaid, Amanda Seyfried will get revenge in an adaptation of Carl Hiaasen's Skinny Dip.

Amanda Seyfried, one of the most in-demand actresses in Hollywood, is ready to submerge herself in Skinny Dip, an adaptation of Carl Hiaasen’s novel taking shape at Prime Video. According to reports, the television project is in development at Prime Video, with Seyfried in the lead role. Initially, the project was being developed at HBO Max, though no actors were attached. With Skinny Dip jumping the fence to Prime Video, things are in motion, with Seyfried leading the charge.

What’s Skinny Dip about?

Per the official logline for Skinny Dip, the one-hour dramedy series tells the story of Joey Perrone (Seyfried), “whose second anniversary didn’t go quite as planned. She expected earrings, but instead, her husband Chaz had, shall we say, alternate plans. After unexpectedly finding herself on the other side of those plans, she vows to get revenge. Teaming up with a disgraced ex-cop, Joey sets out to make Chaz pay.”

Who are the creative forces behind Skinny Dip?

Skinny Dip is written and executive produced by Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, with Bill Lawrence also serving as an executive producer via Doozer. In addition to her starring role, Seyfried will executive produce alongside Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer of Doozer, with Hiaasen also serving as an executive producer. Warner Bros. is the studio.

What’s next for Amanda Seyfried?

Up next for Amanda Seyfried is the psychological thriller The Housemaid, based on the best-selling novel by Freida McFadden. Paul Feig directs The Housemaid from a screenplay by Rebecca Sonnenshine. In addition to Seyfried, the film stars Sydney Sweeney (Anyone But YouMadame Web), Brandon Sklenar (It Ends With Us, 1923), and Michele Morrone (365 Days, Subservience).

In The Housemaid, Millie (Sydney Sweeney) is a struggling young woman who is relieved to get a fresh start as a housemaid to Nina (Amanda Seyfried) and Andrew (Brandon Sklenar), an upscale, wealthy couple. She soon learns that the family’s secrets are far more dangerous than her own.

I’ve seen Seyfried play some pretty psychotic roles, and wouldn’t put it past her to blow this role out of the water. Discovering that your significant other has “other plans” on your anniversary is unthinkable, and I hope Joey has some nasty plans for revenge.

What would you do if you found out that someone had hacked your brain? How would you function? Who would you tell? What about going to the bathroom? Or, you know, private time? Alexander Hale (Simu Liu) will ask himself these questions and more (I’m sure) when The Copenhagen Test comes to Peacock on Saturday, December 27, 2025.

On Monday, Peacock debuted the official trailer, key art, and images for The Copenhagen Test, an upcoming espionage thriller series starring and executive produced by Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Barbie, In Your Dreams). The series is executive produced by James Wan (The Conjuring Universe, M3GAN) and in addition to Simu Liu, stars Melissa Barrera (In the Heights, Scream V and VI), Sinclair Daniel (The Other Black Girl, Insidious: The Red Door), Brian d’Arcy James (Spotlight, 13 Reasons Why), Mark O’Brien (City on a Hill, Ready or Not) and Kathleen Chalfant (Wit, The Affair).

What’s The Copenhagen Test about?

Here’s the official synopsis for The Copenhagen Test, courtesy of Peacock:

This espionage thriller series follows first-generation Chinese-American intelligence analyst Alexander Hale (Simu Liu), who realizes his brain has been hacked, giving the perpetrators access to everything he sees and hears. Caught between his shadowy agency and the unknown hackers, he must maintain a performance 24/7 to flush out who’s responsible and prove where his allegiance lies.

Who are the creative forces behind the series?

Thomas Brandon (Legacies) serves as the creator, co-showrunner, writer, and executive producer of The Copenhagen Test alongside co-showrunner, writer, and executive producer Jennifer Yale (See, Outlander). Mark Winemaker and Jet Wilkinson, who direct episodes 101-102, also serve as executive producers.

What happens in Peacock’s trailer for The Copenhagen Test?

In Peacock’s official trailer for The Copenhagen Test, Alexander Hale discovers he has a Wi-Fi signal streaming from his head, allowing those who control the feed access to his location, sight, actions, and more. Left with no choice but to remove the technology from his head or keep the hack open, Alexander turns the tables on those who invaded his privacy, using it to help prove his innocence and prevent sensitive information he has “leaked” from being used by the wrong people. As the situation intensifies, so does the danger as Alex tries to solve the mystery before it’s too late.

In addition to the official trailer for The Copenhagen Test, Peacock debuted a gallery of images from the upcoming espionage thriller. You can check them out below.

The Copenhagen Test will debut all episodes on Peacock on December 27, 2025.

Darren Aronofsky teams with Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn for an erotic thriller https://www.joblo.com/flynn-aronofsky/ https://www.joblo.com/flynn-aronofsky/#respond Fri, 05 Dec 2025 16:19:17 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=875091 Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn is writing an erotic thriller for producer Darren Aronofsky, director of Black Swan

The post Darren Aronofsky teams with Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn for an erotic thriller appeared first on JoBlo.

Gillian Flynn has written the novels Sharp Objects, Dark Places, and Gone Girl – but for the last thirteen years, she has been busier working in the worlds of film and television. She didn’t work as a writer on the Dark Places film adaptation, but she did write the screenplay for the Gone Girl movie, and worked on a script for the Sharp Objects adaptation when it was going to be a movie instead of the limited TV series it ended up being. She also wrote the 2018 film Widows with director Steve McQueen, created the Prime Video series Utopia, is working on a film adaptation of her short story The Grownup, is developing a limited series based on Dark Places, and is working with Tim Burton on a remake of Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. We’ll probably see a fourth novel from Flynn someday – but Deadline reports that she has just added another film project to her plate. This one is an erotic thriller that’s set up at Sony Pictures and has Darren Aronofsky on board as a producer.

Details Under Wraps

Deadline wasn’t able to dig up any story details on this one, so all we have to go on is that it’s being written by Flynn and produced by Aronofsky, and is said to be an erotic thriller. This is already enough to give uneasy feelings, as Flynn tends to write some very dark stories and Aronofsky is the filmmaker who has brought us the likes of Requiem for a Dream and Black Swan. This could turn out to be a very messed up and disturbing erotic thriller.

Also in the mix behind the scenes is 1.21, the company behind the recent horror film Together. 1.21, which was founded by Andrew Mittman, is producing this one while Kai Dolbashian and Darby Kealey serve as executive producers.

What do you think of the idea of Gillian Flynn and Darren Aronofsky teaming up for an erotic thriller? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.

Aronofsky is also producing the horror film Pendulum, and his next directing project could end up being either a Cujo remake or a thriller called Breakthrough, starring Dwayne Johnson.

Prompt trailer: Full Moon will release erotic AI thriller this Friday https://www.joblo.com/prompt-full-moon-trailer/ https://www.joblo.com/prompt-full-moon-trailer/#respond Tue, 02 Dec 2025 18:51:00 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=872810 Full Moon has unveiled a trailer for director Charles Band's erotic AI thriller Prompt, which will be released this Friday

(Article has been UPDATED with the specific release date.) Six months ago, Full Moon founder Charles Band announced that he was about to head into production on “a sexy horror movie” called Prompt, which he hoped to have ready for release in August. It has taken a few months longer than expected, but Full Moon has now confirmed that Prompt will be premiering this Friday, December 5th, on Amazon VOD and the FullMoonFeatures.com streaming service. Along with that confirmation comes the unveiling of a trailer for the movie, which turns out to be an erotic AI thriller – and there’s a whole lot of sexual moments in this trailer, causing it to verge on NSFW territory. You can watch it in the embed above, as long as nobody’s looking over your shoulder.

Here’s the synopsis: Director Charles Band takes you beyond the threshold of artificial intelligence with this startling and sexy new thriller. When a young woman begins immersing herself in the arena of AI, her wildest and darkest fantasies become sensual realities. But the deeper she sinks into her online explorations, the closer she gets to the shocking truth.

When he first announced the project, Band said, “I’m fascinated by the AI world and how using that as a tool can really enhance what we do. … I don’t see Full Moon really making a movie only in AI, I don’t think the human beings are going to be replaced, but using it as an effect or as a storytelling tool is very exciting. So Prompt, which stars Keep Chambers, who I’ve been a fan of ever since she was the lead in Piranha Women we made a few years ago… I don’t want to blow the storyline, but it is a sexy horror movie. That’s kind of the way we like it; really sexy and pretty f*cking scary.

What did you think of the trailer for Prompt? Will you be watching this movie when it’s released by Full Moon this Friday? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

I watch everything Full Moon releases and am endeavoring to watch all of the 400+ movies Charles Band has produced over the course of his career, so of course I’m going to watch Prompt.

Holt McCallany has been racking up screen acting credits for almost forty years now. He made his TV debut debut in a 1986 episode of All My Children and then delivered a captivating performance (even if his casting in the role may be seen as problematic) in his film debut, the classic 1987 horror anthology Creepshow 2. He’s closing in on 100 credits now, having appeared in the likes of Casualties of War, Alien 3, Jade, The Peacemaker, Fight Club, Three Kings, Below, Monk, CSI: Miami, Alpha Dog, Heroes, Bullet to the Head, Gangster Squad, Golden Boy, Blue Bloods, Sully, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Shot Caller, Greenland, Wrath of Man, The Ice Road, Nightmare Alley, Foundation, 61st Street, The Lincoln Lawyer, The Amateur, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, The Waterfront, and The Iron Claw, among others. These days, he’s probably best known for playing FBI agent Bill Tench in David Fincher’s Netflix series Mindhunter… and while we wait to see if that show is going to continue in some way, Deadline reports that McCallany has signed on to star in the serial killer thriller Paradise: Disturbed.

Production is currently underway in Savannah, Georgia. James Khanlarian is directing the film for Khanlarian Entertainment and wrote the screenplay with producer Peter A. Couture, based on the novel of the same name by James Robert Fuller. Here’s the synopsis: When a series of ritualistic murders begins targeting a tight-knit golf group, retired OSI investigator Ron Lee (McCallany) is forced to confront a brilliant and taunting killer—while his partner Tim Pond fights to keep him from unraveling.

Zak Steiner (Euphoria) plays Tim Pond. Also in the cast are by Lily Donoghue (The Summer I Turned Pretty), Pat Healy (Cheap Thrills), D.W. Moffett (Lisa), Xander Berkeley (The Walking Dead), Cat Kaylin (Purple Hearts), Mary Pumper (The Ghost Trap), Nadia Gray (All Rise), and Sara Yigin (The Mafia’s Innocent Lover).

Couture is producing the film alongside April Aguilera and Larry Mortorff, with casting by Jonathan Clay Harris, who also serves as executive producer.

I was sold on Paradise: Disturbed as soon as I saw that it will involve Holt McCallany taking on a serial killer. Does this one sound interesting to you? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Sam Raimi describes his horror thriller Send Help as “really outrageous” https://www.joblo.com/send-help-really-outrageous/ https://www.joblo.com/send-help-really-outrageous/#respond Wed, 19 Nov 2025 15:42:16 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=872486 Sam Raimi says the writers of his new horror thriller Send Help gave him a really outrageous script to work with

The post Sam Raimi describes his horror thriller Send Help as “really outrageous” appeared first on JoBlo.

]]>

Last October, we heard that Rachel McAdams was in talks to reteam with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi on the 20th Century Studios horror thriller Send Help, which Raimi would be producing and directing. McAdams was quickly joined in the cast by Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner), Chris Pang (Interior Chinatown), and Dennis Haysbert (24). Filming began in early February, putting the film on track for a January 30th, 2026 theatrical release, and last month the trailer dropped online. Now, during an interview with Empire, Raimi has described the project as “really outrageous.”

In 2007, it was rumored that Sam Raimi would be producing a fantasy film with a screenplay written by Freddy vs. Jason and Friday the 13th 2009 writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift. That didn’t pan out, but a decade later Raimi considered directing a Bermuda Triangle project that once had Shannon and Swift working on the script. Again, that didn’t pan out, with Scott Derrickson and more recently Marc Webb picking up the project after Raimi dropped it. In 2019, it was announced that Raimi would be directing an untitled island horror thriller, working from a script by Shannon and Swift. Then the pandemic hit and Raimi went on to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness… but now he has circled back to the island horror thriller, and A Quiet Place writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods have done a rewrite of the script. They previously worked with Raimi on the Adam Driver dinosaur movie 65 and the anthology series 50 States of Fright. They also wrote and executive produced the Stephen King adaptation The Boogeyman for 20th Century Studios.

Raimi is producing Send Help alongside Zainab Azizi, the President of his company Raimi Productions.

When Send Help was first announced, it was said to be like “Misery meets Cast Away” in tone. That’s still the description being given, as Deadline mentioned, “the film is described as a two-hander horror thriller set on an island, falling somewhere between Rob Reiner’s Stephen King adaptation Misery and Robert Zemeckis’ classic Castaway.” They report that the film is a survival horror thriller about two colleagues who become stranded on a deserted island, the only survivors of a plane crash. On the island, they must overcome past grievances and work together to survive, but ultimately, it’s a battle of wills and wits to make it out alive.

Film scooper Daniel Richtman recently revealed that Send Help has the following logline: Comedy-adventure horror about a female put-upon employee and her jerk boss. On a business flight together with their company, the plane crashes on an island and only those two make it. She has serious survival skills which means she’s his only hope. Richtman also shared character details: LINDA: Smartest person in the room, but no one takes her seriously. Actor can’t be overly comedic, has to be believable in serious office setting. Eyed Sandra BullockBRADLEY: LINDA’S misogynistic boss.

Raimi told Empire that the story is “a battle of wills. Its theme is that of power dynamics being turned on their head. The fellas [writing duo Damian Shannon and Mark Swift] pitched the story, and I laughed and couldn’t believe they were doing this. It was really outrageous, even for me, who makes outrageous horror films.” He acknowledged “There is a similarity” to his Evil Dead work, “But it’s not some outside force they’re dealing with here. What they’re coming to terms with is who they really are. And as the layers start shedding, we see certain conflicts emerge.

I’m really looking forward to this one, and “really outrageous” is exactly the sort of description I want to hear for a Sam Raimi horror thriller. Will you be watching Send Help? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Having been found not guilty after standing trial for sex offenses, actor Kevin Spacey (House of CardsAmerican Beauty) is working on a comeback, signing on to work on multiple movies, even though the movies that are coming his way are not on the level of the projects he used to work on. He recently directed and starred in a sci-fi thriller called Holiguards Saga – The Portal of Force, which is intended to be the first in a franchise known as Statiguards vs. Holiguards, and now it has been announced that production has wrapped on another sci-fi thriller that has Spacey in the cast: The Tenth Planet – The Red Sister.

Directed by Matthew Philip Cannon, who also came up with the story, the film sees Spacey taking on the role of psychologist Dr. David Harper. He is joined in the cast by Ben Miles (The Crown), Joe Anderson (The Last Front), Antonia Campbell-Hughes (It Is in Us All), and newcomers Serrana Su-Ling Bliss and Lily Curley. Here’s the synopsis: Set across two timelines, The Tenth Planet – The Red Sister weaves ancient mythology and contemporary science into a story of cosmic destiny and human enlightenment. 12,800 years ago, a young girl named Anna stands at the threshold of destiny as a mysterious red planet looms behind the moon. Ancient rituals and celestial alignments mark the beginning of a cycle that will echo through time. In the present day, humanity teeters on the edge of collapse. Amid global pandemics and unrest, psychologist Dr. David Harper (Spacey) races to support 16-year-old Anna Collins, whose extraordinary visions hold the key to humanity’s salvation. Pursued by the dark forces of Planet X led by the malevolent Cullen (Miles), Greaves (Anderson) an ex MI-5 agent must help Harper navigate a web of deception, spiritual awakening, and cosmic peril. Harper and physiologist Edward Farouz uncover the ancient “Mark of Enlightenment.” Their search leads from the windswept stone circles of Scotland to the hidden claws of Planet X, culminating in a revelation that could determine the fate of mankind. The screenplay was written by Greg Daniels, Gareth Pritchard, and Paul Gerstenberger.

Mark Foligno, Jo Stanhope, and Glen Kirby produced the movie, with Michael Ryan serving as executive producer. Filming took place across Snowdonia in Wales, Leicestershire, and Birmingham.

Cannon describes the movie as “a fusion of ancient myth and modern science, a story that explores what enlightenment means in an age of chaos, loss, and rediscovery. It’s both a human drama and a cosmic mystery.” Foligno added, “This film combines scale, intelligence, and deep emotion. With Matt’s vision and this incredible cast, we’re creating an elevated sci-fi experience with real human depth, the kind of story that resonates with audiences worldwide.

Deadline reports that Toni Collette and Milly Alcock are set to team up for Hot Mother, a survival thriller that will shoot in Australia next year. The pair will play a mother and daughter who “visit a remote wellness spa for the weekend in an attempt to reconnect. But their time together quickly turns into a physical and psychological fight for survival when they get trapped in a sauna where no one can hear their cries for help.

It’s been a while since I last made use of a sauna, but… new fear unlocked. Writer-director Lucy Knox will make her feature debut with Hot Mother, which is based on her 2020 short film of the same name. The project will be produced by Sarah Shaw and Anna McLeish for Carver Films and Alex Coco for Rapt Films.

In a statement, Sarah Shaw and Anna McLeish said, “As producers with a strong track record of launching Australian filmmakers, we’ve been aware of Lucy’s exceptional talent as a writer-director for many years. She’s beyond ready to bring Hot Mother to life for audiences worldwide, with its thrilling screenplay and incredible cast.

Alex Coco added, “Lucy is a filmmaker’s filmmaker, exactly the directors that I’m most committed to working with. With our two lead actresses, this film will play wide globally, and introduce a new and fresh voice to the directing game.

Stephen Kelliher of Bankside Films, who will be handling worldwide sales and co-repping North America with CAA Media Finance, said, “We were sold on Hot Mother from the title alone but discovering Lucy Knox’s incredible short and reading the screenplay solidified our immense passion for this story. With character and mother-daughter relationships at its heart, the film will thrill audiences with its edge-of-your-seat take on a survival story.

Collette was recently seen starring in Wayward, a Netflix mystery thriller series. She will not be seen starring alongside Kate Winslet in Goodbye June, a “touching, yet humorous” drama that follows a fractured group of siblings who come together under sudden and trying circumstances. Winslet is making her directorial debut with the film.

As for Alcock, she made her DCU debut as Kara Zor-El in James Gunn’s Superman and will take center stage in Supergirl, which will hit theaters on June 26, 2026.

Two of Hollywood’s brightest stars, Meryl Streep (The Devil Wears Prada, Sophie’s Choice, Only Murders in the Building) and Sigourney Weaver (Aliens, Galaxy Quest, Ghostbusters), are joining forces for Useful Idiots, an upcoming New York-set thriller from director Joseph Cedar (Norman, Footnote, Constellation).

According to reports, Useful Idiots “follows Diane Castle (Streep), a veteran journalist who covers the New York luxury property market. She’s disillusioned with writing puff pieces about the wealthy elite and regretful that she might not have lived up to her potential. When a record-breaking sale of a new penthouse hits her desk, Diane’s questions about the buyer’s identity lead to what could be the story of a lifetime. At its center is a mysterious oligarch whose influence stretches across Manhattan and beyond – protected by a network of fixers, enablers and a brilliant young strategist. Out of her depth, Diane digs deeper into the investigation, her determination to uncover the truth revealing a web of corruption and danger at the highest levels, ensnaring Diane, her family and all those around her.”

Cedar directs Useful Idiots from a script he co-wrote with 60 Minutes producer Shachar Bar-On. Fifth Season is financing and producing the project with Closer Media’s Zhang Xin and Jonathan King, Oscar winner Bruce Cohen, and William Horberg. Meanwhile, Graham Taylor, Christopher Slager, and Dan Guando will executive produce for Fifth Season.

Meryl Streep recently reprised her iconic role as Miranda Priestly for The Devil Wears Prada 2, starring Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Kenneth Branagh, Justin Theroux, Stanley Tucci, Lucy Liu, and Lady Gaga. In the anticipated sequel, Miranda Priestly struggles against Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt), her former assistant turned rival executive, as they compete for advertising revenue amidst declining print media while Miranda nears retirement.

Meanwhile, Sigourney Weaver’s plate is full thanks to James Cameron and his Avatar franchise. Weaver recently wrapped on Avatar: Fire and Ash, with Avatar 4 in post-production, and Avatar 5 currently filming. Weaver also stars as Colonel Ward in the Star Wars spinoff film The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is set to be released in theaters on May 22, 2026.

Kate Beckinsale is locked and loaded for today’s Wildcat trailer, which finds its way to us courtesy of Aura Entertainment. Directed by James Nunn (One Shot) from a script by Dominic Burns (Allies), the upcoming action thriller finds Beckinsale and her team desperately hoping to avoid death while recovering an eight-year-old girl from kidnappers.

Here’s the official synopsis for Wildcat, per Aura Entertainment’s official press release:

“An ex-black ops team reunites to pull off a desperate heist and save an eight-year-old girl’s life. They have only 12 hours to navigate the lethal streets amidst a citywide riot, pay a large ransom, and frame a dangerous criminal organization.”

Wildcat stars Kate Beckinsale (Underworld franchise), Lewis Tan (Mortal Kombat franchise), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Tom Bennett (House of the Dragon), Alice Krige (Star Trek: First Contact), Edmund Kingsley (The Witcher), and Matt Willis (Missing You)

In addition to Beckinsale, the film also stars Lewis Tan, Charles Dance (Game of ThronesLast Action Hero), Tom Bennett (House of the Dragon), Alice Krige (Star Trek: First Contact), Edmund Kingsley (The Witcher), and Matt Willis (Missing You). James Harris produces Wildcat alongside Christian Mercuri, Crawford Anderson-Dillon, Mark Lane, and Burns.

Wildcat pushes the boundaries of what action can be. Led by the incredible Kate Beckinsale, the film is packed with high-octane sequences that will leave audiences on the edge of their seats,” said Aura Entertainment CEO Marc Goldberg.

In today’s Wildcat trailer, Kate Beckinsale’s past comes back to haunt her when a group of mercenaries kidnaps an eight-year-old girl, and the key to letting her go is a fistful of cash and Beckinsale’s head on a platter. With no choice but to spring into action, Beckinsale gets her old team together to stage an elaborate heist, pitting two crime syndicates against one another while they attempt to rescue the young girl. Their situation quickly deteriorates as things spiral out of control.

Kate Beckinsale’s latest feature is Stolen Girl, a kidnapping thriller directed by James Kent (Testament of Youth, Lost Boys & Fairies) and based on a screenplay by Kas Graham and Rebecca Pollock.

Here’s the official synopsis for Stolen Girl:

Based on extraordinary real-life events, Stolen Girl follows a determined mother, Mara (Kate Beckinsale), whose world is shattered when her ex-husband, Karim, abducts their young daughter, Amina, and flees to the Middle East. Desperate to bring her child home, Mara teams up with Robeson (Scott Eastwood), an enigmatic ex-marine and child abduction specialist. Their mission takes them to Beirut, where they’re pulled into a treacherous web of international espionage, betrayal, and corruption. As time runs out, Mara faces the hardest choice of her life—reclaiming her daughter or leaving her behind for her own safety.

What do you think about today’s Wildcat trailer? The film arrives in theaters and on digital on November 25.

Before Jonathan Mostow attempted to break out with big sci-fi films like the much-maligned Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and the Bruce Willis movie Surrogates, he made a humble little missing persons thriller with Kurt Russell called Breakdown. The film’s plot would involve one of the worst situations to have while traveling cross-country in the middle of nowhere and it is also one of our picks for the 10 Best Kurt Russell Movies. The paranoia film is an underrated gem that features one of the last great performances of the late J.T. Walsh. Blu-ray.com has now reported that Breakdown will soon be getting a 4K physical media release from Paramount Home Media Distribution.

Previously, it was reported last summer that the ultra-high-definition Blu-ray was to come out last October. It obviously hasn’t yet, and Paramount has a seemingly more solid street date for December 30.

The cast that rounds out the film includes Kathleen Quinlan, M.C. Gainey, and Jack Noseworthy. And the description reads, “All roads lead to excitement with Kurt Russell in reakdown, the non-stop thrill ride that’s ‘a movie of nerve-frying intensity…Kurt Russell’s best performance yet’ (Rex Reed, New York Observer). Jeff Taylor (Russell) and his wife Amy (Kathleen Quinlan) are headed toward a new life in California when their car’s engine dies on a remote highway. Amy accepts a ride from a helpful trucker (J.T. Walsh) while Jeff waits with the car. But when Jeff shows up at the agreed rendezvous, he finds his wife’s not there. The locals aren’t talking; the police aren’t much help. With no one to turn to, Jeff battles his worst fears and begins a desperate, danger-ridden search to find Amy – before it’s too late!”

Not much is reported by way of special features, but the technical specs include:

  • Video
    Codec: HEVC / H.265
    Resolution: Native 4K (2160p)
    HDR: Dolby Vision, HDR10
    Aspect ratio: 2.35:1

Having recently binged the entirety of Taylor Sheridan‘s Mayor of Kingstown, I’m in the mood for more prison drama. That’s why I’m completely digging on Lionsgate‘s trailer for Wasteman, a U.K. crime thriller starring Alien Romulus’ David Jonsson and Billy the Kid actor Tom Blyth. Lionsgate debuted a trailer for Wasteman yesterday, and early buzz suggests this close-quarters thriller is one cinephiles won’t want to miss.

In Wasteman, a parolee, Taylor (Jonsson), whose fresh start hopes are jeopardized by cellmate Dee’s (Blyth) arrival. As Dee takes Taylor under his wing, a vicious attack tests their bond, forcing Taylor to choose between protecting Dee and his own parole chances.

Cal McMau directs Wasteman from a script by Hunter Andrews and Eoin Doran. Previously, the film screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, with a write-up on the event’s official site saying, “McMau peels back the conventions of the prison drama to reveal something raw, intimate, and unsettling. Set within a claustrophobic and often brutal UK prison, Wasteman conjures a world where hyper-masculinity is identity and armour, and where even a flicker of vulnerability can be fatal.”

“At its heart is Taylor (David Jonsson, Rye Lane, Industry), a soft-spoken inmate serving a crushing sentence for a petty crime,” the TIFF preview continues. “He survives by becoming invisible: cutting hair, avoiding trouble, and occasionally numbing the monotony with pills, all the while clinging to faint memories of the son he hasn’t seen since infancy. Jonsson delivers a performance of remarkable restraint, each gesture seemingly shaped by years of swallowed pain.”

If Johnny Law sent me to prison, I’d find the best way to keep my head down, just like Taylor. I can’t imagine making all that effort to become invisible only to have another inmate jeopardize my freedom with his unruly shenanigans. From what I can gather, Dee ropes Taylor into unlawful cell parties, contraband galore, and a prison riot where inmates have makeshift shivs taped to their hands. I’ve got a feeling this won’t end well for anyone.

What do you think about Lionsgate’s Wasteman trailer? How would you survive a prison sentence? Let us know in the comments section below.

Dwayne Johnson and Benny Safdie’s Lizard Music to move to the groove at Amazon MGM https://www.joblo.com/lizard-music-amazon-mgm/ https://www.joblo.com/lizard-music-amazon-mgm/#respond Thu, 16 Oct 2025 17:46:08 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=867225 Benny Safdie and Dwayne Johnson's next film project, Lizard Music, has landed a distribution deal with Amazon MGM.

After getting in the Octagon together for The Smashing Machine, Dwayne Johnson and Benny Safdie hope to make beautiful music together with the upcoming film project Lizard Music, based on Daniel Pinkwater’s novel. The adaptation finds Safdie directing Johnson in the role of Chicken Man, which could be the muscle-bound entertainer’s most bizarre character yet. Today, we’re hearing that Amazon MGM is set to distribute Lizard Music for the Johnson and Safdie project.

Deadline’s description of Pinkwater’s story paints a strange picture: “When a boy left to his own devices stumbles upon a secret late-night broadcast of lizards playing otherworldly music, a hidden door to the extraordinary swings open. His search for answers leads him to the eccentric and whimsical Chicken Man and his beloved companion, a seventy-year-old chicken named Claudia—two kindred spirits who have also glimpsed the impossible. United by this shared vision, they set off on an adventure that begins as a hunt for a hidden society but blossoms into something far greater: a voyage through invisible worlds, unexpected harmonies, and the unbreakable bond between lost souls who discover magic not only in what they find, but in each other.”

Benny Safdie will produce Lizard Music for Down For The Count Productions, with Johnson through Sven Bucks Productions, and David Koplan, who produced The Smashing Machine.

Unfortunately, despite winning the Silver Lion at Venice for The Smashing Machine, the drama chronicling the life and career of MMA legend Mark Kerr only managed to bodyslam $17.1M worldwide at the box office. With Lizard Music sounding like even more of a gamble than Smashing Machine, I hope the new project’s bizarre concept can break through to mainstream audiences.

What do you think about the concept for Lizard Music? Would you follow a character named Chicken Man into the unknown? Will Johnson and Safdie continue betting on one another after The Smashing Machine failed at the box office? Why do you think the duo’s MMA drama went unseen by most audiences? What band does Lizard Music sound like? My guess is a combination of DEVO and Talking Heads. Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

First images and trailer unveiled for Sam Raimi’s horror thriller Send Help, starring Rachel McAdams https://www.joblo.com/send-help-images/ https://www.joblo.com/send-help-images/#respond Tue, 14 Oct 2025 16:58:00 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=866809 The first batch of images and a trailer have been unveiled for Sam Raimi's Send Help

The post First images and trailer unveiled for Sam Raimi’s horror thriller Send Help, starring Rachel McAdams appeared first on JoBlo.

Filming began in early February, putting the film on track for a January 30th, 2026 theatrical release – and now, the first images have dropped online! You can check them out at the bottom of this article, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly. UPDATE: We now have a trailer as well, as you can see in the embed above!

Raimi told Entertainment Weekly he was drawn to this project because “I found the two lead characters, Linda and Bradley, to be complex, human, and constantly at odds with each other in often conflicting situations. The pitch was outrageous and original, all the while tracking these two in their conflict as their power dynamic changed dramatically. I knew right away that I wanted to direct this picture. … What I really love about this story is that it’s an underdog tale at its core. Not only is it about survival on a deserted island, but it’s also a story of female empowerment and transformation. Watching a once-powerful boss find himself dependent on someone he underestimated is satisfying. Our story is universal! We need to encourage our society to treat people with respect and kindness, regardless of status. It’s especially rewarding to see our heroine, Linda, come into her own in such an unexpected environment.

I’m there to see anything Sam Raimi makes, so I’m looking forward to checking out Send Help. Are you interested in this movie? Take a look at the images, then let us know by leaving a comment below.
