After playing nicely with Kevin James for Amazon’s buddy action comedy Playdate, Alan Ritchson (Reacher, Fast X, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) is returning to Queensland, Australia, for the anticipated production start of an untitled project at Amazon MGM Studios about decorated Navy SEAL hero Mike Thornton. The project finds Ritchson teaming with Sylvester Stallone, who’s producing the film alongside D. Matt Geller via Balboa Productions.

Who are the creative forces behind Ritchson’s new project?

Principal photography on the project is set to begin this month at Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast. Ritchson is familiar with the area, having filmed the action thriller Runner, which Scott Waugh shot in Brisbane and the Gold Coast last year. Filmmaker Patrick Hughes (The Hitman’s Bodyguard, The Man from Toronto, The Expendables 3) is helming the untitled project, which Variety says “chronicles Thornton’s real-life survival story in the South China Sea that earned him a Congressional Medal of Honor.” In addition to Alan Ritchson, the Hughes-helmed project stars Joe Cole (Peaky Blinders, Black Mirror, A Prayer Before Dawn) and Hoa Xuande (The Sympathizer, A Stitch in Time, Cowboy Bebop).

Joining Sylvester Stallone’s Balboa Productions as part of the production effort are Hidden Pictures’ Todd Lieberman and Alex Young, Ritchson’s AllyCat Entertainment, and Alan Rautbort. Executive producers are Valerie Bleth Sharp and Mike Thornton. When Hughes gets behind the camera, he’ll direct from a screenplay by Mark Semos (SEAL Team, Y: Marshals), Ritchson, and Jason Hall (American Sniper).

“This latest project for Amazon MGM Studios will create employment for around 260 local cast and crew while injecting an estimated AUD50 million ($33.5 million) into the Queensland economy and supporting numerous small businesses,” said Acting Minister for the Arts Tim Nicholls.

“Queensland crews have an internationally renowned reputation for delivering complex action films and series and it’s fantastic to start the new year with such an ambitious production coming into Village Roadshow Studios,” Screen Queensland CEO Jacqui Feeney said.

Ritchson and Hughes recently completed work on War Machine

Alan Ritchson and Patrick Hughes recently joined forces for War Machine, an action sci-fi thriller that follows the final recruits of a grueling special ops boot camp as they encounter a deadly force from beyond this world. Joshua Diaz, Dennis Quiad, Jai Courtney, and Esai Morales also star. That movie starts streaming on Netflix on March 6.

The Wrecking Crew trailer

Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista unite their quippy, muscular powers for a new action comedy over at Prime Video. The film was directed by Angel Manuel Soto (Blue Beetle) from a script by Jonathan Tropper (Star Wars: Starfighter). In addition to Bautista and Momoa, the film stars Claes Bang, Temuera Morrison, Jacob Batalon, Frankie Adams, Miyavi, With Stephen Root and Morena Baccarin. Amazon has just released the new trailer for the film, which is set to premiere on the streamer on January 28.

The official synopsis reads,
“In this action comedy, two estranged half-brothers, Jonny (Jason Momoa) and James (Dave Bautista) are forced to reunite after their father’s mysterious death. As they set out to uncover the truth, buried secrets resurface and loyalties are tested, unveiling a conspiracy that can tear their family apart. Together, they are ready to WRECK anything that gets in their way. Set in the streets of Hawaii, the film is directed by Angel Manuel Soto (Blue Beetle) and also stars Claes Bang, Jacob Batalon, Stephen Root, and Morena Baccarin.”

Producers on the film include Jeff Fierson, Jason Momoa, Dave Bautista, Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris.

Coming up for these gentle giants

Bautista has a big project coming up in the new year: playing the Kurgan in Chad Stahelski’s highly anticipated Highlander reboot. Production on Highlander was supposed to begin in the fall, but Cavill was injured while training for the film, and it was pushed back to early 2026. I’m sure he’s going to do great as the iconic villain, but the actor confessed last month that he was feeling a little stressed about taking on the role. “No pressure at all, right? Man, I am stressed about this, because I am such a fan of the original,” Bautista said. “Clancy Brown was in his 20s when he was the Kurgan. I’m in my 50s. I hope I can do the world justice.“

As for Momoa, he also has a significant role in his future, as he will be playing Lobo in the DCU. It’s a character Momoa has wanted to play for a long time, and even playing Aquaman in the DCEU wasn’t going to stand in his way. You can catch a quick glimpse of Momoa as Lobo in the recently released trailer for Supergirl.

Director Gore Verbinski was riding high for a while. He got his feature career started with Mouse Hunt and the Brad Pitt / Julia Roberts movie The Mexican, then followed his hit remake of The Ring with a trilogy of Pirates of the Caribbean movies (and dropping an underrated Nicolas Cage movie into the mix along the way). Things got bumpy the animated movie Rango was followed by The Lone Ranger, one of the biggest box-office bombs of all time. He brought us the psychological thriller A Cure for Wellness in 2017… and nothing since. He’s had a number of projects in the works, but they never moved forward. He was attached to a live-action adaptation of Bioshock for many years before the project was shelved and was also in talks to direct the Gambit movie starring Channing Tatum. One of the last projects Verbinski was said to be working on was an adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s The Sandkings for Netflix, but we haven’t heard any updates on the project for a while. Thankfully, he did finally manage to get one project into production: the mind-bending sci-fi adventure Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die. The film is aiming for a February 13, 2026 theatrical release and promises to be completely unhinged. Today, a trailer has dropped online to give us a hint of just how crazy the movie is, and you can watch it in the embed above.

Cast and Synopsis

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die follows a man who claims to be from the future and takes the patrons of an iconic Los Angeles diner hostage in search of unlikely recruits in a quest to save the world. Sam Rockwell (JoJo Rabbit, Iron Man 2) stars alongside Haley Lu Richardson (The Edge of SeventeenThe White Lotus), Michael Peña (Narcos: MexicoJack Ryan), Zazie Beetz (JokerDeadpool 2), and Juno Temple (Ted LassoVenom: The Last Dance). The screenplay written by Matthew Robinson, who co-wrote The Invention of Lying with Ricky Gervais and Love and Monsters with Brian Duffield.

Early reactions to the film have been very positive, so I’m looking forward to seeing it. It has been given an R rating for pervasive language, violence, some grisly images and brief sexual content.

Are you glad to have a new Gore Verbinski movie to look forward to? Check out the trailer for Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, then let us know by leaving a comment below.

Plot: In a time loop during an alien invasion, a resourceful but isolated young woman must navigate the repetition of death until she crosses paths with a shy young man trapped in the same cycle. Together, they fight to break free from the loop.

Review: Without fail, one of the most requested sequels in Hollywood is a follow-up to Doug Liman’s 2014 alien invasion epic Edge of Tomorrow. The film, starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, centers on a man fighting in a war against aliens who must relive the same day every time he dies until he can find a way to stop the enemy’s power source and break the cycle. Liman’s live-action version of the original story by Japanese author Hiroshi Sakurazaka is at times an intense roller coaster ride of bullets, mystery, and dystopian mayhem, but as good as it is, the anime I just watched, directed by Ken’ichirô Akimoto and Yukinori Nakamura, is an even better adaptation of Sakurazaka’s brilliant and emotionally raw story.

Akimoto and Nakamura’s All You Need Is Kill, based on a screenplay by Yûichirô Kido and Hiroshi Sakurazaka, takes an alternate approach to Liman’s version by focusing on Rita, a young woman trapped in a time loop after an unidentified and massive plant from outer space known as “Darol” unleashes monstrous creatures that decimate the population. Following a mysterious surge of energy from “Darol,” Rita becomes trapped in a time loop, forcing her to relive the catastrophic events of the day when all of her friends and fellow soldiers die. As time passes, Rita utilizes her memories and experiences to refine her skills, transforming her into a formidable warrior.

The loop traps Rita in a Groundhog Day-like cycle of solitude and destruction as she faces her formidable foes in a seemingly endless cycle of demoralizing defeat. The repetitive presentation of the story hammers home the loneliness and futility of Rita’s self-appointed mission. Her body and mind are exhausted, yet she’s steadily becoming an unstoppable killing machine with each trip into the fray. Akimoto and Nakamura’s film digs deep into the emotional stress of Rita’s rattled brain and body. Every time she dies, it feels like another dagger to the soul. Some people say pain begins to lessen with repetition. I did not find that to be the case with All You Need Is Kill. Every time I heard Rita’s bones snap or blood spill from her broken body, I felt an intense sensation of frustration and defeat.

At some point, it feels like Rita is about to give up, just let everyone die a horrible death. What’s the point? Nothing she does changes anything. She’s faster, wiser, and learning, but it’s never enough. That is, until she meets Keiji, a young co-worker from her base who’s caught in the same loop, secretly admiring Rita from afar. Once Keiji is exposed, he and Rita share information and partner in the effort to defeat “Darol” and save the world. Finally, Rita isn’t alone anymore, giving her a restored sense of purpose and duty.

Together, Rita and Keiji form an unlikely bond that helps change the tide of their war against “Darol.” Their chemistry is nothing short of endearing, earned, and beautifully executed with heart and sincerity. Their relationship is the kind that adds depth to an already impressive display of artistry and emotion. That’s another thing about All You Need Is Kill: it’s drop-dead gorgeous. Studio 4°C goes above and beyond to put meticulous care into every frame of the film, making it a visual spectacle that spans the color spectrum and introduces mind-boggling topography. You can see and feel the influence of the studio’s past films, such as TekkonkinkreetChildren of the Sea, and The Animatrix, in All You Need Is Kill, particularly in the characters’ angular features and fun-house mirror-like movements.

All You Need Is Kill also boasts a killer soundtrack. In fact, the rich soundscapes were among the first things I took note of aside from the stunning visuals. The movie features a theme song by AKASAKI, but the specific composers for the background score are not detailed online. Still, the score features atmospheric glitch pop, ambient loops of meditative melodies, and rousing overtures that amplify the action when it kicks into overdrive, amounting to one of the better soundtracks I’ve heard in an anime film in recent memory.

While fans of Liman’s Edge of Tomorrow impatiently wait for word about a sequel to his 2014 version of Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s time travel epic, they could seek out All You Need Is Kill, an astonishingly breathtaking mix of hand-drawn and CGI animation that explodes in your eye sockets and tugs at your heartstrings as Rita and Keiji try time and again to discover a way to vanquish “Darol” and prevent the world from being overtaken by a hostile alien entity with no remorse.

Stranger Things 5 sets a New Year’s Day record as the finale turns the Netflix Top 10 chart upside down https://www.joblo.com/stranger-things-5-netflix-chart/ https://www.joblo.com/stranger-things-5-netflix-chart/#respond Tue, 06 Jan 2026 20:42:37 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=878887 Unsurprisingly, the Stranger Things 5 finale gave Netflix its best New Year's Day numbers yet by climbing to No. 1 on the English TV chart.

Netflix‘s Stranger Things might be done playing Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” at every conceivable opportunity, but that doesn’t mean the series is going silently into the Upside Down. According to the latest Netflix Top 10 chart, the Stranger Things series finale gave the streamer its best New Year’s Day numbers yet, with the final episode rising to the No. 1 spot on the English TV list with 31.5 million views. The season also officially joined the Most Popular English TV list, assuming the No. 9 spot with 105.7 million total views. Stranger Things 4 currently holds the No. 3 spot.

Stranger Things continues to dominate the charts

If you think the power of Stranger Things influence begins and ends with Season 5, think again. Viewers put Season 1 at No. 3 (7.6 million views) on the English TV list, then slingshotted Season 2 to No. 5 (5.5 million), Season 3 to No. 7 (5 million), and Season 4 to No. 8 (4.8 million), making this the sixth record-setting week that the English series has had all its seasons on the list.

There’s a Stranger Things documentary on the way

The Stranger Things madness doesn’t stop there. Netflix has one more bullet in the chamber, thanks to the newly announced documentary One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5, arriving on January 12. Behind-the-scenes clips have been making their way to social media since the finale’s debut, but the documentary promises a more in-depth look at the final season, along with a few surprises along the way.

There’s more fun sci-fi on Netflix to enjoy

If you’re feeling the science-fiction void during your Stranger Things comedown, check out the Korean disaster movie The Great Flood. The movie reached the No. 1 spot on the non-English film list with 11.1 million views. The film, about a mother desperate to keep her son safe amid a flood engulfing their apartment building while discovering her own role in a larger mission to save humanity, also entered the Most Popular non-English film list in its third week on service, debuting at No. 7 with 72.1 million views.

About that additional episode rumor

Are you surprised by the numbers Stranger Things is pulling for its final episode? What did you think about the ending? Do you believe the rumors about there being a secret final episode? I don’t. Not even for a second. The ending is what it is, for better or worse. Plus, the epilogue was already an hour long. Do you need another two-hour episode to explain the fallout from the events in Hawkins? I’ll tell you what. If the Duffers want to explain how Nancy mowed down several military agents with zero repercussions or jail time, I’m all ears.

Dusting off the tombs

The Tomb Raider franchise has seen a few live-action adaptations. The popular exploratory action game was first adapted for the big screen in 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, with Angelina Jolie inhabiting the role. That film would get a sequel with Jan De Bont’s 2003 film, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life. Then, Alicia Vikander would step into the role for a 2018 reboot, which didn’t get a continuation. Now, Phoebe Waller-Bridge is dusting off the franchise for a new Prime Video series with Sophie Turner in the title role.

New Cast Announcements

Deadline is now reporting that, after Sigourney Weaver was said to be eyeing a role, she is now confirmed to appear in the new adventure series. Additionally, Jason Isaacs is also confirmed to be added to the cast after his appearance in the latest season of The White Lotus. Per Deadline, “Isaacs will play Atlas DeMornay, one of the canon roles, and Weaver will be Evelyn Wallis, a mysterious, high-flying woman who is keen to exploit Lara’s talents.” Additional cast announcements include Martin Bobb-Semple playing Zip, and Bill Paterson is Winston from the canon. From the Tomb Raider universe, the show will also feature Jack Bannon, who plays Gerry, John Heffernan, playing David, and Celebrity Traitors UK alum Celia Imrie, who portrays Francine. There are also roles for Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed and August Wittgenstein.

Waller-Bridge stated, “Tomb Raider boasts a plethora of iconic characters. I am thrilled to have been able to bring some personal and fan favourites to the screen while also introducing a few new rascals of our own to the mix. This cast is beyond my wildest dreams.”

Who’s bringing this series to life?

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is the creator, writer, and executive producer of Amazon’s Tomb Raider series. Meanwhile, the project is a collaboration between Story Kitchen, Crystal Dynamics, and Amazon MGM. Chad Hodge (Single All the WayThe Playboy ClubWayward Pines) and Jonathan Van Tulleken (ShōgunDope Thief) are executive producers. In addition to executive producing, Tulleken will direct the production. Waller-Bridge and Jenny Robbins executive produce via Wells Street Productions; Dmitri M. Ever since Avatar: Fire and Ash hit theaters, there’s been a lot of talk about the future of the franchise. Understandably, after working on the franchise for nearly two decades, James Cameron is itching to work on something else. Oh, he loves the Avatar movies, but variety is the spice of life, my friends, and with a mind as creative as Cameron’s, I’m not the least bit surprised that he might want to jump ship before the next installment. While Disney and Cameron haven’t decided whether there will be an Avatar 4, that hasn’t stopped filmmakers from daydreaming about taking over the franchise should Cameron decide to leave. In fact, one filmmaker who has expressed interest in taking over directing duties for Avatar 4 is James Wan, the mastermind behind the The Conjuring franchise and director of films such as Aquaman, Malignant, and Furious 7.

Wan volunteers as tribute to direct Avatar 4

Speaking with Screen Rant about his future behind the camera, Wan said, “I have not done Avatar. Yeah, if you could put a good one for me with James Cameron, I’d love to take a crack at that.” While this is simply Wan shooting his shot in an unofficial capacity, it’s a bold proclamation nonetheless.

Previously, James Cameron said he would only make more Avatar movies if Avatar: Fire and Ash performed well at the box office, and even then, he’s unsure. As fate would have it, Fire and Ash crossed the $1 billion mark over the holiday break, making it one of 2025’s most successful blockbusters. Whether that’s enough for Cameron to return behind the camera for Avatar 4 remains uncertain. While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron said that if there were a fourth Avatar film, he’d likely still direct, but would outsource more of his day-to-day duties to second-unit directors.

James Cameron on lightening the load for Avatar 4

“I’ve learned how to expand the second unit concept,” Cameron said. “For example, most directors don’t operate their own camera, so when I’ve done the performance capture, I operate every damn virtual camera on the first movie. On the second film, I started to lay off some of that to [virtual second unit director] Richard Baneham and to other people. I can imagine laying off the entire thing when I’ve already set the stage for exactly how a scene plays out, and then I’ll circle back around in editorial. So yeah, that’s possible.”

If James Cameron decides to relinquish directing duties for Avatar 4, can James Wan fill his shoes? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Loyalties are tested in the new trailer for the Matt Damon/Ben Affleck action thriller The Rip https://www.joblo.com/the-rip-trailer-2/ https://www.joblo.com/the-rip-trailer-2/#respond Mon, 05 Jan 2026 13:39:07 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=878621 Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have their loyalties and moralities tested in the new crime thriller from Joe Carnahan.

The post Loyalties are tested in the new trailer for the Matt Damon/Ben Affleck action thriller The Rip appeared first on JoBlo.

Netflix has released a new trailer for the Joe Carnahan thriller The Rip, which stars the famous best friends from Boston — Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. In the trailer, loyalties become blurry and a team of cops find themselves not knowing who to trust when they stumble upon millions of dollar in cash during a rip mission. Carnahan directs from a script he wrote, which came from a story by himself and Michael McGrale. The film is produced by Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Dani Bernfeld and Luciana Damon with Kevin Halloran and Michael Joe for Artists Equity on as executive producers.

Here is the plot of The Rip courtesy of Netflix: “Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on.” The supporting cast includes Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Kyle Chandler, Scott Adkins, and more. Previously marketed as RIP (as in “rest in peace”), The Rip (as in something you pull from a crime scene) is directed by Joe Carnahan, making it a Smokin’ Aces reunion for the director and Affleck. It’s probably more notable for most because it’s another reteaming for Affleck and Damon, who most recently appeared onscreen together in 2023’s Air.

Director Joe Carnahan, whose credits include Narc, The GreySmokin’ Aces and The A-Team, shared that he was inspired by a friend from Miami Dade PD’s Tactical Narcotics division after a real-life rip mission. Carnahan explained, “I went through an unbelievably bad breakup, and it was really fraught with a lot of pain and anger. And in the weirdest way, man, it just reconstituted—I kept thinking of Back to the Future II, like give me trash and I’ll create fusion. I’ve never been good at therapy, and probably because there’s something deeply wrong with me that I’m immune to it. But I found this to be very therapeutic, and that script just kind of flew out of me.”

The Rip is also something of a business venture for Affleck and Damon, as it comes courtesy of their Artists Equity production company, which the boys launched in late 2022. Their first release was the aforementioned Air, which earned two Golden Globe nominations in the Musical or Comedy category. In addition to The Rip, Artists Equity also has Bill Condon’s Kiss of the Spider Woman on the calendar for an awards season run and has already seen the release of the Affleck-led The Accountant 2.

The Rip releases on Netflix on January 16, 2026.

When is Tron: Ares coming to Disney+? https://www.joblo.com/tron-ares-disney-plus/ https://www.joblo.com/tron-ares-disney-plus/#respond Tue, 30 Dec 2025 18:34:00 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=878260 The latest film in Disney's Tron franchise, Tron: Ares, sets the eye-popping sci-fi sequel's Disney+ streaming date.

Like a lot of other people, you might be waiting for Tron: Ares to hit streaming before you check it out. Thankfully, the wait is almost over, as Tron: Ares is set to arrive on Disney+ on January 7, just one day after the film’s physical release.

The latest chapter of Disney’s Tron franchise debuted in theaters on October 10, opening to $33.2 million at the domestic box office. The threequel banked $142.2 million worldwide, making it one of 2025’s most significant box office flops. Despite the film’s eye-popping visuals and soundtrack featuring new music from Nine Inch Nails, audiences failed to connect with the sequel, regardless of Jared Leto’s star power (which I question) and Jeff Bridges‘ return to the franchise.

Who are the creative forces behind Tron: Ares?

Joachim Rønning (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) directs Tron: Ares, which stars Jared Leto (Morbius), Cameron Monaghan (Gotham), Evan Peters (Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story), Greta Lee (Past Lives), Sarah Desjardins (Yellowjackets), Gillian Anderson (The X-Files), Hasan Minhaj (No Hard Feelings), Arturo Castro (Road House), Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim), and returning Tron star Bridges. Sean Bailey, Jeffrey Silver, Justin Springer, Jared Leto, Emma Ludbrook, and Steven Lisberger are the producers, with Russell Allen serving as executive producer.

Scripted by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne, the film tells the story of a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with AI beings. Leto plays Ares, “a fictional character who crosses over from the world of videogames to planet Earth.”

Will Tron: Ares become a hit on Blu-ray and Disney+?

While Tron: Ares failed to perform at the box office, the film could catch on when it arrives on Blu-ray and Disney+. Tron: Ares debuts on 4K Blu-ray on January 6. The physical release features a behind-the-scenes look at the film, cast insights, deleted scenes, and a special retrospective on the Tron franchise’s legacy. Typically, physical releases and Disney+ debuts don’t share similar release dates, but Tron: Ares appears to be an exception. Are you looking forward to checking out Tron: Ares when it comes to Disney+? Let us know in the comments section below.

Simu Liu is celebrating the approach of the new year early with some exciting news about his upcoming action film Sleeping Dogs. According to Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Last Breath, The Copenhagen Test), Timo Tjahjanto (Nobody 2, The Beekeeper 2, The Night Comes for Us) is directing the anticipated adaptation of the Square Enix action-adventure game.

Where did Timo Tjahjanto get his start?

Hailing from Indonesia, Tjahjanto began turning heads when he directed the B-horror movie V/H/S/2. Three years after contributing to the found footage horror franchise, Tjahjanto burst onto the action scene with Headshot, a mixed martial arts psychological thriller starring Iko Uwais, known for The Raid and Wu Assassins. In 2018, Tjahjanto and Uwais reteamed for one of my favorite action films, The Night Comes for Us, a one-person-army crime thriller about Ito, a gangland enforcer caught amidst a treacherous and violent insurrection within his Triad crime family upon his return home from a stint abroad. Directed and written by Tjahjanto, The Night Comes for Us is positively brutal, action-packed, and relentlessly entertaining. Tjahjanto returned to the V/H/S franchise in 2021 for V/H/S/94, before circling back to action with 2022’s The Big 4 and 2024’s The Shadow Strays. His latest release finds him teaming up with Bob Odenkirk for Nobody 2, the sequel to Ilya Naishuller’s 2021 action bonanza, with Odenkirk playing Hutch Mansell, a docile family man forced back into action after his house gets burgled by two petty thieves, which, coincidentally, leads him into a bloody war with a Russian crime boss.

What is Sleeping Dogs?

Sleeping Dogs is an action game with a similar open-world format to Grand Theft Auto from Square Enix about an undercover cop who takes down the most notorious gang on the streets: the Triads. The game is set in Hong Kong and focuses on martial arts fighting, car chases, parkour stunts, and gunplay. Previously, Fast & Furious franchise producer Neal Moritz was working on bringing the movie to life with action star Donnie Yen starring in the lead role. The project never materialized. However, it sounds like Liu’s attempt to bring Sleeping Dogs to screens is progressing nicely.

Sigourney Weaver course-corrected James Cameron’s directing approach on the set of Aliens https://www.joblo.com/sigourney-weaver-aliens-james-cameron-critisism/ https://www.joblo.com/sigourney-weaver-aliens-james-cameron-critisism/#respond Sun, 28 Dec 2025 20:21:00 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=877996 Sigourney Weaver had to give James Cameron a stern talking-to after he "butted heads" with a young cast member on the set of Aliens.

The post Sigourney Weaver course-corrected James Cameron’s directing approach on the set of Aliens appeared first on JoBlo.

]]>
Everyone knows that when Sigourney Weaver walks onto an Alien movie set, she’s not messing around. Weaver plays Ellen Ripley, the beloved character from the science-fiction action franchise. When she was making 1986’s Aliens with James Cameron, she wasn’t afraid to give the filmmaker a piece of her mind about his approach to one of the movie’s young actors.

According to Weaver, she witnessed Cameron “butting heads” with a young female actor on set who was struggling with some of the props.

What did Weaver say to Cameron?

“I sort of trundled up to him and I said, ‘You know, when you yell at an actor, you yell at all of us, so understand that what she was doing actually was very hard. Maybe shoot something else while she gets used to doing this stuff the way you want it,'” Weaver recalled.

Thankfully, Cameron took Weaver’s instruction to heart and amended his approach. “He’s a good guy. I really do think Jim has mellowed,” Weaver insists.

Weaver sympathizes with Cameron about Aliens

In addition to remembering her chastising Cameron on the set of Aliens, she also recalled getting dinner with him after production for the Alien sequel had wrapped, saying, “He hadn’t been like that directing. He was wildly funny, witty. I can understand why that guy couldn’t come out during ‘Aliens,’ because that was a tough shoot, especially for him. Let’s put it this way: I’m glad I wasn’t shooting ‘The Abyss’ with him.”

I’ve met many people who struggle to accept criticism. Thankfully, Weaver and Cameron are both professionals, and the duo continues to make beautiful movies together. Currently, Sigourney Weaver stars as Kiri in Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, which reached $544M+ worldwide after Christmas Day screenings. Weaver’s has been a part of Cameron’s Avatar franchise since 2009, with the inaugural chapter.

Personally, I can’t begin to imagine how difficult it must have been to work on the set of Aliens. Between the complex Xenomorph puppetry, water-logged sets, atmospheric mood lighting, and more, Aliens is a production with innumerable moving parts. I could easily see being confused by unfamiliar props and so much more while working on a film of that magnitude.

James Cameron is at a crossroads with his Avatar franchise. The latest chapter in the series, Avatar: Fire and Ash, recently crossed the $500 million mark on Christmas Day, but without knowing how much more the movie will make during its theatrical run, it’s challenging to know what the future holds. Previously, Cameron said he would end the series after the third installment if Fire and Ash didn’t make enough money. This conundrum puts Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 in stasis, and Cameron is busy making plans for both the success and premature end of Avatar.

James Cameron on the future of the Avatar franchise

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Cameron said he will hold a press conference to reveal the plot details of Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 if the franchise ends after Avatar: Fire and Ash.

“I don’t know if the saga goes beyond this point. I hope it does,” Cameron told Entertainment Weekly. “But, you know, we prove that business case every time we go out… If we don’t get to make 4 and 5, for whatever reason, I’ll hold a press conference and I’ll tell you what we were gonna do. How’s that?”

Could Avatar 4 & Avatar 5 become novels?

Previously, Cameron said he could novelize the remaining plot of his Avatar franchise, even if that’s not what fans of the film franchise would prefer. It’s better than nothing, right?

“There’s so much culture and backstory and lateral detail in these characters that’s been worked out. I’d love to do something that’s at that level of granular detail,” Cameron said about turning his Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 scripts into books.

Cameron spoke to Variety about Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, admitting that plans for the sequels are unknown, saying, “We’re getting ahead of ourselves.” He then added, “We’ve got to make some money with this one [Fire and Ash]. Every time we go out, we have to prove this crazy business case yet again. The world has changed. We all know the stats, where theatrical is. It’s been a bad year. It’s starting to perk up a little bit with a couple of recent releases: ‘Wicked: For Good’ has done well, and ‘Zootopia 2’ is doing well. So, we’ll see.”

Do you hope James Cameron gets to make Avatar 4 and Avatar 5? Would you be okay with reading novelized versions of the scripts? Let us know in the comments section below.

It’s less than a month out from the release of Netflix’s The Rip, and the steamer has given us a new look at the anticipated reunion of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. The film comes from director Joe Carnahan, whose credits include Narc, The Grey, Smokin’ Aces and The A-Team. In a recent GQ interview, he shared that he was inspired by a friend from Miami Dade PD’s Tactical Narcotics division after a real-life rip mission.

In the same GQ interview, Damon says he and Affleck quickly signed on to the film to make it through their Artists Equity studio. When the Bourne series star was asked what movies he and his best friend intend to produce, he stated, “Our goal is always to just make movies that we think we’ll like, which is really the same calculus we use in our own careers as actors. It kind of drives our creative team crazy, because they’re like, ‘What are we looking for?’ And we always just go, A good movie.”

Affleck explained that he took the movie because, “I was interested in this particular brand of masculinity and drawn to playing what I suppose now is an unapologetically ‘throwback’ type role.” He was also enthused about reuniting with Carnahan in particular because he “understands those men.”

Carnahan gave his impression of Artists Equity as “the vanguard of something that I think is really vital. Hopefully, a lot more artists adapt [like they have]; they’re doing things in a non-traditional way. I’ve worked for some absolute scoundrels, bums, thieves, and crooks, and had to make movies under really difficult conditions with just the worst… I’ll put air quotes, ‘producers.’ [Ben and Matt] are the cream of the crop. They’re just unimpeachable in what they do.”

Here is the plot of The Rip courtesy of Netflix: “Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray.

STXfilms is stuffing everyone’s stockings with new character posters (posted below) for Greenland 2: Migration, the highly anticipated sequel starring Gerard Butler (300, Law Abiding Citizen, The Phantom of the Opera) and Morena Baccarin (Deadpool 2, Serenity, Elevation). Ric Roman Waugh (Angel Has Fallen, In the Shadows, Snitch) directs the post-apocalyptic drama from a screenplay written by Mitchell LaFortune (Last Breath, Mission Kandahar) and Chris Sparling (Buried, The Sea of Trees).

What’s Greenland 2: Migration about?

Here’s the official synopsis for Greenland 2: Migration, courtesy of STXfilms:

In the aftermath of a comet strike that decimated most of the Earth, Greenland 2: Migration follows the Garrity family as they’re forced to leave the safety of their bunker in Greenland to traverse a shattered world in search of a new home.

Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin reprise the roles of John and Allison Garrity, with Roman Griffin Davis taking over the role of Nathan Garrity from Roger Dale Floyd. Also in the cast are Amber Rose Revah (The Punisher), Sophie Thompson (Gosford Park), Trond Fausa Aurvåg (The Bothersome Man), and William Abadie (Emily in Paris).

Naturally, the new character posters are precisely what you’d expect. The latest prints feature individual shots of Butler, Baccarin, and Griffin looking hopeful, despite a rain of comets hurtling toward the planet in the background. Optimism. Gotta love it.

How did Greenland 2: Migration get a green light?

When Greenland 2: Migration was being shopped around, it became a hot commodity. The post-apocalyptic movie was sold in the biggest deal to occur at the Cannes virtual market, with STX making a massive $75 million deal. Domestic rights for the film were sold for $25 million, while STX will also acquire all international rights from Anton in a pact worth around $50 million. Multiple streamers were trying to snag the sequel, and STX made sure to be first in line for it. STX distributed the original movie and had a matching option to acquire the sequel. Producing this installment are Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road Pictures, Anton’s Sébastien Raybaud and John Zois, G-BASE’s Butler and Alan Siegel, and CineMachine’s Brendon Boyea. Executive producers are Robert Simonds, Noah Fogelson, and Sam Brown for STX Entertainment, Ric Roman Waugh for CineMachine, and Chris Sparling.

Greenland 2: Migration is set for a January 9, 2026, theatrical release, marking a strong start to 2026!

Last Samurai Standing renewed for season 2 at Netflix https://www.joblo.com/last-samurai-standing-renewed/ https://www.joblo.com/last-samurai-standing-renewed/#respond Tue, 23 Dec 2025 00:38:45 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=877615 The bloody samurai battle royale will continue as Netflix has renewed Last Samurai Standing for a second season.

The post Last Samurai Standing renewed for season 2 at Netflix appeared first on JoBlo.

]]>
Netflix has renewed Last Samurai Standing for season 2, setting the stage for more bloody samurai action. Based on the Ikusagami series of novels by Shogo Imamura, the first season follows 292 samurai as they are drawn into a lethal contest by the promise of a 100 billion yen prize.

Last Samurai Standing was a Big Success on Netflix

In a statement to THR, Last Samurai Standing star, producer, and action choreographer Junichi Okada said, “I’m pleased to see that Last Samurai Standing has reached global audiences and has been confirmed for a second season. I’m excited to get back into this wild world and once again charge into battle with the production team. We hope to make the next season even more energetic and action-packed. We’d love to have you along for the ride, and please stay tuned for Season 2.

The six-episode first season of the series debuted on Netflix on November 13 and quickly became a big success. It topped the streaming service’s Global Top 10 (Non-English Series) chart and ranked in the Top 10 in 88 countries. It held the #1 position for four consecutive weeks in Japan. It also boasts a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Director Michihito Fujii said the overseas reception to the series helped persuade Netflix to move forward with a second season. “I’m very pleased and relieved that Last Samurai Standing has been such a big hit outside Japan,” he said. “Thank you so much. I’m also honored to say that the series has officially been greenlit for a second season. It gives me chills just thinking about all the exciting days that lie ahead with this amazing production team led by Junichi Okada. There’s no doubt that Season 2 will be even bigger and better than the first, so I’m going to hold on to my seat and give it my best. I hope everyone will keep their eyes peeled for what we have in store!

What is Last Samurai Standing About?

Set in the late 19th century during the Meiji period, Last Samurai Standing thrusts viewers into a relentless life-and-death game,” reads the description. “At nightfall, 292 warriors — including lead character Shujiro Saga (Junichi Okada) — gather at Kyoto’s Tenryuji Temple, each lured by the promise of a massive cash prize. Each donning a single wooden tag, participants must steal the tags of their rivals and race to Tokyo to claim victory. As the signal sounds, the temple erupts into chaos, launching a brutal fight for survival where only one can stand victorious.

I haven’t had the chance to watch the series for myself (who has the time to actually watch all these shows?), but I’ve got it sitting in my watchlist for some point in the future. Those of you who have watched Last Samurai Standing, are you excited to see that the series has been renewed?

James Cameron and Terminator

Director James Cameron became synonymous with action movies with films like The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day. While there have been numerous attempts to recapture the magic of his sci-fi action one-two punch, Cameron, himself, is back at trying his hand at a continuation of his banner franchise. Cameron said he’s ready to plunge into the new Terminator project once the dust has cleared on Avatar: Fire and Ash. “There are a lot of narrative problems to solve,” he said. “The biggest is how do I stay enough ahead of what’s really happening to make it science fiction?”

Cameron’s favorite action movie

While promoting Avatar: Fire and Ash on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Cameron took Colbert’s questionnaire and one of the questions he was presented with was what was his favorite action movie? Cameron immediately responded with, “Ooooh.” Then, he jokingly asks for clarification, “You mean, besides mine?” Colbert responded, “No, it can be one of yours. You can include one of yours.” Cameron confidently replied, “I know the answer to this. It’s Die Hard.” The crowd erupts with applause and Cameron expounded,

Best one-liner. Best villain death. Best Christmas movie.”

Following the “Best Christmas movie” declaration, the crowd cheered again with Cameron nodding in agreement and Colbert quipped, “That was gonna be my next question.”

Cameron’s current actioner

If you thirst for some new James Cameron mayhem, his film Avatar: Fire and Ash has just hit theaters. Our Chris Bumbray enjoyed the film for the experience it offers at the movie theater. In his review, he states, “At over 3.5 hours, shown in 3D and at 48 frames per second, Avatar: Fire and Ash is a lot of movie, but it does something a lot of other films can’t do — it delivers a cinematic experience on the big screen that can’t be duplicated at home, no matter how fancy your screen is.”

He also concluded, “Yet, as always with this series, I had a good time, as the lengthy running time races by, and the immersive tech really does make you feel like you’re part of this world. Cameron still seems engaged by the material, and it’s bound to be another hugely successful crowd-pleaser (an Aliens callback involving Weaver’s Kiri will no doubt get a lot of cheers).”

What’s going on with the Marvel trailer leaks? https://www.joblo.com/marvel-trailer-leaks/ https://www.joblo.com/marvel-trailer-leaks/#respond Fri, 19 Dec 2025 23:37:25 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=877270 The past week has seen the leak of several Marvel trailers, including ones for Avengers: Doomsday and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

The post What’s going on with the Marvel trailer leaks? appeared first on JoBlo.

The first of four teaser trailers for Avengers: Doomsday is now playing exclusively in theaters alongside Avatar: Fire and Ash, but it didn’t stay secret for long. Earlier this week, the teaser leaked online (spoiling a returning character in the process), followed by audio from the second teaser and even the full trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Marvel is famously protective of its secrets (Tom Holland aside), so the sudden flood of trailer leaks raises an obvious question: what’s going on behind the scenes?

How the Spider-Man: Brand New Day Teaser Might Have Leaked

THR’s Heat Vision newsletter explored one theory for why these leaks have occurred, at least in the case of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. They explain that “it escaped from a service studios use to get early feedback on trailers from average moviegoers, who sign NDAs in exchange for looking at stuff early… The Brand New Day trailer is played on a computer screen that could be logged into such a site, but it’s unclear.

There have been rumours that the Brand New Day teaser trailer is scheduled to air with Anaconda on Christmas Day or during the Super Bowl in February, but no confirmation has been made.

What We Know About Brand New Day

Production recently wrapped on Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which has been directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) from a screenplay by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.

Tom Holland has naturally returned as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and Jon Bernthal joins him as Frank Castle/Punisher, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk, Zendaya as MJ, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, Michael Mando as Mac Gargan/Scorpion, and Marvin Jones III as Lonnie Lincoln/Tombstone. Liza Colón-Zayas and Tramell Tillman appear in unspecified roles. Sadie Sink is also playing a character whose identity has been shrouded in mystery, and we may see more of her, as reports suggest she has joined the cast of Avengers: Secret Wars.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to be released in theaters on July 31, 2026, followed by Avengers: Doomsday on December 18, 2026.

What Did You Think About Avatar: Fire and Ash? https://www.joblo.com/avatar-fire-and-ash-what-did-you-think/ https://www.joblo.com/avatar-fire-and-ash-what-did-you-think/#respond Fri, 19 Dec 2025 20:37:53 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=877250 James Cameron's Avatar: Fire and Ash is finally setting the box office ablaze, and we want to know what you think of the film.

The post What Did You Think About Avatar: Fire and Ash? appeared first on JoBlo.

]]>
Before family home invasions begin for the holidays, James Cameron will give the box office one final jolt with Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third film in his money-printing science-fiction franchise. The epic threequel is already off to a stellar start at the box office, with $12 million in domestic dollars during Thursday previews, and $43.1 million across 43 markets worldwide. It’s evident that audiences are still excited to visit Pandora for more action-packed adventures, but ultimately, what truly matters is what people think about the film.

What We Thought About Avatar: Fire and Ash

Our Chris Bumbray had a fantastic time with Avatar: Fire and Ash, even if the story beats are starting to wane. He says in his review, “Yet, as always with this series, I had a good time, as the lengthy running time races by, and the immersive tech really does make you feel like you’re part of this world. Cameron still seems engaged by the material, and it’s bound to be another hugely successful crowd-pleaser (an Aliens callback involving Weaver’s Kiri will no doubt get a lot of cheers). Some think the audience’s thirst for Avatar may run out someday, but Cameron has been wise in the way he’s refused to allow the studio to spin off any element of his world, keeping the franchise feeling fresh. If there’s an Avatar 4and 5, I’ll be there.” You can read his full review HERE.

What James Cameron Said About the First Avatar Saga

According to James Cameron, he doesn’t think of Avatar: Fire and Ash as a sequel, but a culmination of the Avatar saga. This term seems fitting, as Cameron has spent decades working on the Avatar franchise. After so much time, projects evolve, becoming part of something larger than just another chapter in a larger story.

“I think you’ve got a little bit of experience with sequels and how you have to deliver beyond the audience’s expectation, take them from the familiar to the new each time,” Cameron explained. “I don’t think of Fire and Ash as a sequel. I think it was a culmination of a saga. I like ‘saga’ better than ‘sequel’ because a lot of where we were going with the story was in the original architecture of the story. So if you think of this as the third act, I think that’s healthier. As opposed to a typical Hollywood sequel, where they make a bunch of money with a movie and then they’re like, ‘Oh, crap. We’ve got to scramble around and get a new script. Maybe it’s not so good, but let’s just shoot it and get it out there.’ That’s not what we’re doing here at all. It’s a long game. And I went into it knowing that we’d be playing a long game and betting that the audience would come along with us and care about these people. Because they may be 10 feet tall and blue, but they’re people.”

Avatar 4 is slated to hit theaters in 2029, followed by Avatar 5 in 2031. However, Cameron is ready to call it quits if needed. “I have no doubt in my mind that this movie will make money,” he said. “The question is, does it make enough money to justify doing it again?” If not, Cameron is “absolutely” ready to set the franchise aside if there’s no more demand for sequels.

Cameron told io9 that films four and five are “It’s own saga. It’s got a beginning and a middle and an end that plays out across these two films. They’re vaporware right now.”

You already know what we think about Avatar: Fire and Ice, but what do you think about the film? Will you see the movie over the holiday break? Will you see it more than once? How many more Avatar films do you think Cameron has left in him? Let us know in the comments section below.

How the new Cliffhanger movie lost Sylvester Stallone https://www.joblo.com/cliffhanger-lost-stallone/ https://www.joblo.com/cliffhanger-lost-stallone/#respond Fri, 19 Dec 2025 15:31:30 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=877168 A lawsuit filed by the producer reveals how the new Cliffhanger movie lost Sylvester Stallone and became a reboot rather than a sequel

The post How the new Cliffhanger movie lost Sylvester Stallone appeared first on JoBlo.

]]>
Back in 1993, Sylvester Stallone and director Renny Harlin teamed up to bring us a really cool action movie called Cliffhanger – and on August 28, 2026, Row K will be releasing a Cliffhanger reboot starring Pierce Brosnan and Lily James. At one point, this reboot was set up as a sequel to the original film, with Sylvester Stallone reprising the role of Gabe Walker… but something went wrong, Stallone dropped out, and Gabe Walker was rewritten to be Brosnan’s character, Ray Cooper. Now, Variety has revealed exactly what happened behind the scenes to cause this creative shake-up: the new Cliffhanger movie lost Sylvester Stallone due to pay and scheduling issues.

Cliffhanger Refresher

Directed by Harlin from a script by Stallone and Michael France, Cliffhanger had the following synopsis: For Rocky Mountain Rescue, the mission is almost routine: locate five climbers. With the woman he loves and his best friend, Gabe Walker braves the icy peaks only to discover that the distress call is really a trap set by merciless international terrorist Eric Qualen. Now millions of dollars and their own lives hang in the balance. Against explosive firepower, bitter cold, and dizzying heights, Walker must outwit Qualen in a deadly game of hide-and-seek.

Behind-the-Scenes Issues

There have been multiple attempts to bring a follow-up to the screen over the decades, starting with the 1994 announcement of a sequel called Cliffhanger 2: The Dam, which would have seen Stallone reprising the role of Gabe Walker to fight terrorists who took control of the Hoover Dam. Producer Neal H. Moritz started developing a reboot in 2009 and hired Joe Gazzam to write a script in 2014. At some point, Fred Dekker wrote a script called Cliffhangers, but it was scrapped. Things really started picking up steam when Ana Lily Amirpour was hired to direct a female-led reinvention in 2019… and then, as mentioned, was a stretch of time in 2023 when it looked like Stallone was going to come back for a sequel that would have been directed by Ric Roman Waugh from a script by Mark Bianculli. The set-up, as described by Waugh: “Gabe Walker – he’s got a daughter, he’s got an heir apparent, pseudo son, and they have a mountaineering company, Italian Alps. Tragedy strikes that’s very similar to what happened in the original movie, so that father and daughter have to deal with that and how to overcome tragedy. How do we get through traumatic experiences and fight to move forward? It’s what extreme sports like climbing are all about. And of course, there might be some nefarious bad guys that show up in the Italian Alps, and all hell breaks loose.” Waugh eventually dropped out and was replaced by Jean-Francois Richet… then the whole thing crumbled.

Variety explains that Stallone was on board to work on the movie in the fall of 2023, before the second season of Tulsa King started filming. He wanted his fee to be put in escrow, guaranteed up front. But, a lawsuit filed by Moritz against the film’s financiers at Rocket Science Industries states that “Rocket Science failed to secure Stallone’s commitment to do the Picture because it refused to guarantee Stallone’s fee.” Moritz and his producing partner Toby Jaffe kept pushing the project forward and even cut together a sizzle reel with Stallone envisioned as the lead, which they then used to market the film to sales agents. But as time went on and Stallone’s involvement couldn’t be confirmed, Waugh backed out. Richet and a new writer, Melanie Toast, were brought in to get the project ready to roll – but when the start of production was pushed back into 2024, a scheduling conflict with Tulsa King and the lack of a fee guarantee caused Stallone to walk away.

Russell Crowe was considered as Stallone’s replacement, but Pierce Brosnan ended up taking on the role.

Reboot

So, Gabe Walker was written back out of the script and the project became a reboot again. The Cliffhanger reboot has made its way through production with director Jaume Collet-Serra at the helm, working from a script that’s credited to Ana Lily Amirpour, Sasha Penn, Mark Bianculli, and Melanie Toast. The synopsis lets us know that Ray Cooper is a seasoned mountaineer who runs a luxury chalet in the Dolomites with his daughter. When a weekend excursion with a billionaire’s son turns violent, they are targeted by a group of kidnappers. As the attack unfolds, Ray’s daughter, Naomi, still haunted by a tragic climbing accident, escapes into the mountains and must fight for survival against both nature and her pursuers. Basically, it’s the same story that the sequel would have been, but with “Gabe Walker” replaced by “Ray Cooper,” Pierce Brosnan standing in for Sylvester Stallone.

As mentioned, Moritz is currently suing financier Rocket Science Industries, claiming that they have “reneged on an agreement to pay him a $2.5 million producer fee. … In May 2024, Moritz and Jaffe were asked to defer all their producer fees. Rocket Science execs explained that they were experiencing budget problems, partly because the loss of Stallone meant lower guarantees for pre-sales in Spain, Latin America and Scandinavia, according to the complaint. The fees for the director and lead cast had come in higher than expected, and the lenders wanted the producers to hold back their fees as a condition of financing the project. The suit states that Moritz and Jaffe had already warned Rocket Science that they were paying too much for talent. Although the deferral of producer fees occasionally takes place in connection with making independent motion pictures, it is highly unusual for requests to be made to a producer of Moritz’s stature to defer the entirety of the producer’s fee. The problem with the deferral of producer fees is not just that the producer gets paid later than he or she was supposed to be paid, but deferral may result in the producer never getting the full agreed-upon fee or possibly not even any portion of the fee.

What do you think of the issues behind the scenes on the new Cliffhanger movie, and the fact that they caused Sylvester Stallone to walk away? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.

A preview of The Odyssey

Christopher Nolan‘s new epic The Odyssey doesn’t release until next summer (July 17, 2026, to be exact), but a special preview of the film was seen in theatres recently. A nearly six-minute prologue was shown ahead of IMAX 70mm screenings of Sinners and One Battle After Another, and the first reactions from movie-goers who have seen the prologue are incredibly positive. After only seeing a few minutes of the movie, they’re already calling it breathtaking, jaw-dropping, and possibly even the biggest movie ever made. And the hype will only build more from here.

A new poster

Today, Universal has just released a brand new one-sheet for the adaptation. The one-sheet seems like a teaser poster and features none of the cast’s faces. Only the back of Odysseus’ battle helmet is front and center. The helmet sports a cool design with the back having what looks like a spinal column running down the “ponytail” part. The color grade is an interesting one as the poster is in a blue-ish tint, not unlike the blue tint Nolan gave The Dark Knight. Meanwhile, the spine part of the helmet immediately pops out with its gold finish. Take a look at the poster below!

the odyssey

The story of The Odyssey

The Odyssey is based on an ancient Greek poem by Homer that tells the tale of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his journey home after the ten-year Trojan War. The trip was perilous, including encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the witch-goddess Circe. At home, Odysseus is presumed dead, and his wife Penelope and son Telemachus must contend with groups of unruly suitors who each want Penelope’s hand in marriage to control the kingdom.

Nolan’s take on the story stars Matt Damon, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Mia Goth, Zendaya, Elliot Page, John Leguizamo, Samantha Morton, Ryan Hurst, Logan Marshall-Green, Lupita Nyong’o, Josh Stewart, Benny Safdie, Corey Hawkins, and Elyes Gabel.

Filming took place in Morocco (Aït Benhaddou for Troy), Greece (Peloponnese, Pylos, Methoni Castle, Nestor’s Cave), Italy (Favignana, Aeolian Islands in Sicily), Scotland (Moray Firth coast, Findlater Castle), and Iceland. Favignana, Sicily’s “Goat Island” is “believed to be the place where Homer envisioned Odysseus landed with his motley crew to barbecue goats and stock up on food. The idyllic isle is part of the Egadi archipelago off of Sicily’s north-west coast.“

Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat II was the most challenging role of Karl Urban’s career https://www.joblo.com/karl-urban-johnny-cage/ https://www.joblo.com/karl-urban-johnny-cage/#respond Wed, 17 Dec 2025 17:41:57 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=876847 Karl Urban plays Johnny Cage in the upcoming video game movie Mortal Kombat II and says it was the most challenging role of his career

Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid is back at the helm for the sequel Mortal Kombat 2, and while the video game adaptation wrapped production back in January of 2024 after a bumpy ride through the year of the strikes, they had to go back for some reshoots that summer. Since then, we’ve been patiently waiting for this sequel to come along. It was supposed to reach theatres back in October, but got bumped to May 15, 2026. While we continue to wait, cast member Karl Urban has revealed that this movie gave him the most challenging role of his career!

Cast

Mortal Kombat II stars returning Mortal Kombat cast members Lewis Tan as MMA fighter Cole Young, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion, and Max Huang as Kung Lao. New additions include Karl Urban (Dredd) as Johnny Cage, Adeline Rudolph (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) as Princess Kitana; Tati Gabrielle (You) as Jade, the friend and bodyguard of Princess Kitana; Damon Herriman (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) as Netherrealm demon Quan Chi; bodybuilder/actor Martyn Ford (F9: The Fast Saga) as Outworld emperor Shao Kahn; Ana Thu Nguyen (Suka) as Kahn’s wife Queen Sindel; and Desmond Chiam (Joy Ride) as Jerrod, who was the King of Edenia (and married to Sindel) until Edenia’s warriors lost in the Mortal Kombat tournament.

The film has earned an R rating for strong bloody violence and gore, and language.

Johnny Cage

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Karl Urban said, “I asked for a heavy-action content movie, and for my sins, they gave me one. It was the most challenging role that I’ve ever undertaken in my career. It’s the martial arts. The form and the style of martial arts is so specific, and the choreography, at times, is so definitive in its movement, and there’s a precision of execution for it to look good. It was a huge challenge. … As part of my research, I went to karate tournaments and looked at the younger generation of martial artists coming through to see what it was like growing up in that environment, as I imagine Johnny Cage had done when he was a kid.

The Entertainment Weekly article also reveals that Cage is “a washed-up Hollywood actor. A former karate student as a kid, he grew up to be a big shot in the Sylvester Stallone-, Jean-Claude Van Damme-, and Arnold Schwarzenegger-era of B-action movies, but he’s now working the dried-up fan convention circuit.” He’s in the twilight of his career when he gets recruited into the Mortal Kombat tournament – and his fighting skills are rusty and sloppy when he has his first fight, which pits him against Kitana.

Crowd Pleaser

Screenwriter Jeremy Slater, who was the lead writer on the Marvel / Disney+ series Moon Knighthas said that test screening audience responses to Mortal Kombat II have been so enthusiastic, they’re on the level of the reaction he (and many other movie-goers) had to Avengers: Endgame – which sounds good for Garner’s sequel plans.

Garner told FutureBoyWho2 (with thanks to SuperHeroHype for the transcription), “We’re hoping that this is not the end of the franchise. So, this is not like we’re just doing this movie and this is going to be it, hopefully. We have a plan further down the line for things.” Referencing the character Hanzo Hasashi becoming Scorpion and Bi-Han becoming Sub-Zero and then Noob Saibot, he added, “Those characters have evolved. I know everybody’s waiting for Kano to get the metal plate in his eye. That will happen. … If we’re allowed to do further movies, hopefully this one does well enough, there’s chances to do other things, spinoffs, another sequel to propel the story, bring in different characters, and evolve the characters that we already have.” He even teased that the character Rain could appear in Mortal Kombat 3… and it has already been confirmed that Mortal Kombat 3 is in the works.

Chris

What are the greatest action movies of all time? It’s a controversial question, isn’t it? Any time any publication or site puts out a new list of what they consider the best action movies of all time, it can’t help but generate a ton of controversy. Nevertheless, we here at JoBlo have decided to throw our hats into the ring with a list we really hope generates some nostalgia among our viewers but also encourages them to seek out the movies on this list that they may not have seen. But first, some may wonder where superhero movies are on this list. Given how broad that genre is, we decided to stick to old-school action, so we have left them off the list, as they deserve their own ranking. There are also a few absences from the list, notably some Jackie Chan Hong Kong films (like Police Story), with those to follow in another planned list, so stay tuned! With that out of the way, here’s our Top 25 Greatest Action Movies Ever Made!

Hard Target greatest action movies

25. Hard Target (1993)

Jean-Claude Van Damme is one of the biggest action stars of all time, and Hard Target is his best action movie. Beautifully directed by John Woo in his American film debut, it’s not only gloriously violent and lovingly photographed, but it has one of the most memorable villains of all time, Lance Henriksen’s Emil Fouchon. It’s a take on the classic Most Dangerous Game formula, but it gives the heroes and villains equal screen time as they play out a game of cat and mouse, making it highly unique as an action film. One note – to fully appreciate this movie, you must see the uncensored, unrated version, which Kino recently reissued on Blu-ray.

Leon: The Professional greatest action movies

24. Leon: The Professional (1994)

Luc Besson’s 1994 hitman drama ranks as one of the most stylish action movies ever made. Sporting a lush score by Eric Serra, and an iconic performance by Jean Reno as the titular “cleaner”, this one inspired many knockoffs. It also introduced the world to Natalie Portman, who plays Leon’s pseudo-daughter figure, Mathilda, who he helps avenge her family’s murder (Portman seems curiously mixed on the film now, though). Plus, Gary Oldman delivers the greatest villain performance of his career as cinema’s most iconically evil corrupt cop.

Casino Royale greatest action movies

23. Casino Royale (2006)

You can’t seriously do a list like this without including at least one James Bond movie. While I’d wager On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and maybe Goldfinger are better James Bond movies in terms of action, I think Martin Campbell made the best overall action film of the franchise with Casino Royale. It re-invented James Bond for the 21st century, and it is an excellent showcase for Daniel Craig. Once people saw him doing parkour, all doubts about his ability to carry the franchise were immediately put to rest.

Commando greatest action movies

22. Commando (1985)

Arnold Schwarzenegger became a star in Conan the Barbarian and The Terminator, but Commando changed his image from a killing machine to a more personable, loving variation. Sure, he still sends 137 souls to meet their maker, but he also establishes a loose persona as a caring dad that really changed the way people see him. Plus, Commando has some of the most creative carnage of all time packed into the insane climax. The woodshed scene alone is glorious.

Rambo first blood part ii 1985

21. Rambo: First Blood Part 2 (1985)

The Vietnam War was a psychic wound on America of this era, and I’m not sure contemporary audiences are aware of the cultural importance of Rambo: First Blood Part 2 in the United States throughout the eighties. Along with Commando, this was one of the first “one-man-army” movies and was endlessly imitated. It was also the second highest-grossing movie of 1985 and boosted Stallone into the stratosphere. It was also name-checked by the sitting president – Ronald Reagan – and, in some ways, paved the way for more serious examinations of the Vietnam War, such as Platoon. It’s also worth noting that the MIA issue was widely debated at the time, so of all the films on this list, it could be argued that this might be one of the most culturally significant ones.

Top Gun

20. Top Gun (1986)

Tom Cruise’s Maverick is one of the most iconic movie characters ever. Rumour has it enlistment into the US Navy skyrocketed after this Tony Scott-directed masterpiece, which stars Cruise as the famously cocky pilot. From a stylistic standpoint, this might actually be the most influential film on the list – the only reason it’s this far down is that the action is mainly contained to aerial dogfights. You could also make a good case for the sequel, Top Gun: Maverick being one of the best action movies ever, too.

Road House greatest action movies

19. Road House (1989)

While some may chuckle at Road House’s inclusion on this list, it belongs here for several essential reasons. For one, it upends the era’s idea of an action hero. Many of the era’s biggest stars were monosyllabic types, but Patrick Swayze was different. His character, Dalton, is intelligent, stylish and cerebral, with a degree in philosophy and a low-key vibe that invites people to underestimate him – to their doom. But, the main reason Road House makes this list is that the fights in this movie feel real, with them the perfect antidote to the over-choreographed bouts that followed in its wake. In this one, people whack each other with tree trunks, and by the time it’s over, Swayze’s Dalton can barely stand. It’s a masterpiece of its kind (and we’re excited about the well-received remake, even if it will never replace the original in our hearts).

25 best action movies

18. Beverly Hills Cop (1984)

Being an action hero isn’t all about brawn. Attitude has a lot to do with it, and there’s arguably never been a hero with more attitude than Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley. He’s not a muscle man, but he’s young and street-smart. What’s also great about this movie is how director Martin Brest allows the film to be hilarious but takes the action very seriously, especially towards the end. I also always liked that Axel becomes pals by the end with the real Beverly Hills Cops that initially antagonize him. I’m cautiously optimistic about the upcoming fourth film.

John Wick: Chapter 4, director's cut, Keanu Reeves

17. The John Wick Franchise (2014 -)

Granted, we’re cheating a bit with this one, but it’s pretty amazing how what started as a movie that nearly went to VOD became one of the biggest action franchises of the century. At the time this was made, Keanu Reeves was on the verge of becoming a DTV star, but this reinvented him for a new generation and gave him one of his most iconic characters to play – with him becoming the most iconic movie hitman since Chow Yun Fat ditched his guns. Chad Stahelski’s take on action choreography has been tremendously influential, with every action flick that comes out nowadays owing the franchise a sizeable debt.

Kill Bill 4K

16. Kill Bill Volume 1 & 2 (2003, 2004)

Quentin Tarantino has made some incredible films, but in terms of action, none was more influential than his ode to Kung-Fu cinema, Kill Bill. The first volume alone has some of the most stylish and memorable action sequences of the last quarter century, including the iconic “Showdown at the House of Blue Leaves”. Each volume is half of a bigger whole, but in terms of action, performance, direction and music, I think a case that Kill Bill is one of the greatest action movies of all time can easily be made.

Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa, first look

15. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Not every movie is a walk in the park, and it figures that sometimes, to get excellent results on the big screen, you need a little behind-the-scenes chaos. Indeed, Fury Road was a madhouse of a shoot, with the two stars, Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy, famously feuding. In the making of book, Blood, Sweat and Chrome, both look back at the complex making of the film with regret, with it seeming like no one ever knew exactly how much of a classic it would become, with Hardy especially noting how his head he was. The result on screen was arguably worth it. George Miller took decades to get a new Mad Max movie underway finally, and the result was widely considered one of the greatest movies of its kind ever made.

14. Point Break (1991)

In 1991, Point Break was considered another quite solid action movie. Still, like another movie starring Patrick Swayze on this list, its legacy grew over time, with it being one of the most quotable and rewatchable movies of all time. It helped make Keanu Reeves an action star, and it’s one of the best-directed studio films of the nineties, with Kathryn Bigelow’s movie ripped off over and over in the years to follow- most notably by The Fast and The Furious. There. We said it. Vin Diesel doesn’t have anything on Crazy Swayze.

predator 1987

13. Predator (1987)

Fact: there has never been a more macho movie made than Predator. Think about it – you have Arnold Schwarzenegger, the late Carl Weathers, Jesse “The Body” Ventura, Bill Duke, crazy Sonny Landham, and the Predator! Even before the alien shows up, this would be up there with the greatest “men on a mission” movies ever made, but when suddenly the team starts getting picked off, and Arnold has to go mano-a-mano with his otherworldly foe, you know you’re watching a classic. Also, Predator pulls off a neat trick – it makes Schwarzenegger an underdog. This won’t be the last John McTiernan movie on this list.

12. First Blood (1982)

While Rambo 2 is maybe more impressive from a pure carnage standpoint, First Blood is devastating and arguably Sylvester Stallone’s best-ever movie after the original Rocky. John Rambo is a tragic character here, and the action, while lower-key than in the next film, will blow you away, such as his fantastic cliff-dive. There’s an incredible score by Jerry Goldsmith and Stallone’s astonishing action in the shattering climax.

best action movies of the 90s

11. The Matrix (1999)

The only bad thing about The Wachowskis The Matrix is that it was so good a whole slew of movies tried to copy it, only for no one to do it quite as well. Even the Wachowskis were never quite able to nail a follow-up, with none of the sequels particularly good, even if they have their fans. The first is one of the best sci-fi action movies ever, with Keanu Reeves reinventing himself as Neo, one of the millennium-defining heroes.

Iko Uwais and more have joined Eiza González and Aaron Paul in the sci-fi thriller Ash, directed by Flying Lotus

10. The Raid (2011)

Audiences who saw Gareth Evans’ The Raid at its original TIFF Midnight Madness screening walked out of this one feeling like they’d just been hit by a freight train. The martial arts action movie was re-invented by this, and it’s an equally impressive sequel, with Iko Uwais showing off moves as we’d never really seen on the big screen before. The sequel, The Raid 2, is arguably just as good. We’re pretty excited to see Evans’ long-delayed Havoc, starring Tom Hardy, which should hit Netflix this year.

lethal weapon 5, mel gibson, danny glover

9. Lethal Weapon (1987)

While it’s not the first buddy-cop movie, this is the one that made it a genre unto itself. Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are perfectly cast as the iconic pals Riggs and Murtagh. Richard Donner’s lean and mean direction gives the movie a pulse. The (admittedly excellent) follow-ups come close to matching, but not quite. Gibson’s Riggs, in particular, feels like one of the few truly dangerous action heroes.

The 80s Horror Memories docu-series continues its journey through 1987 with a look at Paul Verhoeven's RoboCop

8. Robocop (1987)

Paul Verhoeven’s hyper-kinetic, ultra-violent future cop movie will never be equaled, so of course it has to be on a list of the greatest action movies. Peter Weller is iconic as the tragic Alex Murphy-turned-Robocop, and it’s one of the few movies on this list that no one could ever accuse of being dated. Everything about it is cutting edge, from the novel use of miniatures to the social commentary and the excellent score by Basil Poledouris.

The latest episode of the 80s Horror Memories docu-series looks at one of the most popular sequels ever made, Aliens

7. Aliens (1986)

This is unique because it’s an action movie sequel to a tight horror flick. Everyone has their own opinion about whether James Cameron’s space actioner matches Ridley Scott’s original. Still, it remains one of the best sci-fi actioners ever made, with Sigourney Weaver our choice for the greatest heroine ever. Plus, the movie also has Michael Biehn in one of his best roles (Corporal Hicks), Bill Paxton, an amazing score by James Horner and more.

6. The Road Warrior (1981)

Some will say George Miller’s Fury Road is better, but for my money, nothing matches the intensity of The Road Warrior, which is shot without the benefit of CGI and any other bells and whistles. The vehicular carnage is fantastic, and Mel Gibson, like it or not, is the definitive Mad Max. It’s a rollercoaster ride of a movie. While one could argue that the first Mad Max film was more influential, Miller always considered it a rough draft of what he wanted to do with the franchise… and clearly what he wanted to do was to make some of the greatest action movies the audience had ever seen.

enter the dragon 1973 greatest action movies

5. Enter the Dragon (1973)

Very few movies on this list are as influential as the final film made by the great Bruce Lee; this movie would have broken him through to a North American audience. Granted, his dying does add to the mystique, but boy, is this ever one of the best martial arts action movies ever made? With Enter the Dragon, I wonder if English-language martial arts action stars like JCVD or Steven Seagal would have ever happened. Simply put, Enter the Dragon gave North American audiences the appetite for martial arts mayhem.

John Woo hard boiled 1992 Chow Yun fat

4. Hard Boiled (1992)

John Woo was at the peak of his filmmaking abilities when he made this buddy cop action flick in Hong Kong, pairing Chow Yun-Fat’s rebellious cop, Tequila, with an undercover operative played by Tony Leung. The last forty minutes of this film have never been matched from a shoot-out standpoint. Someone once told Quentin Tarantino that “John Woo sure can direct an action sequence”, to which he replied, “yeah, and Michelangelo sure can paint a ceiling.” Watch Hard Boiled and see what he’s talking about.

best action movies

3. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

Steven Spielberg and George Lucas’s Ode to Adventure is the most iconic film of its kind, introducing us to the great Indiana Jones, played by Harrison Ford. What else can be said about the adventure masterpiece that hasn’t been said already? If you’ve never seen this movie in a theater, I urge you to go check it out if it ever plays near you. There’s something different about watching this movie with an audience in a theater, especially during the last hour, where it just goes from set-piece to setpiece. Also, has any action star ever thrown a better punch than Harrison Ford as Indy?

terminator 2 greatest action movies

2. Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)

The best sequel of all time remains the last of its kind, being a huge budget action flick done in the old ways, with real explosions and real heart, with Schwarzenegger giving his most affecting performance as the cyborg who slowly learns the bittersweet truth about being human. Plus, Linda Hamilton as a newly musclebound Sarah Connor is one of the greatest action heroines. So many movies, including Terminator films, have tried to recapture the magic of this one, but have failed. It’s one of a kind, and definitely one of the greatest action movies.

Die Hard Christmas greatest action movies

1. Die Hard (1988)

What else could it be? Bruce Willis’s John McClane is the definitive action star, as he is a regular guy forced into action and wants to get home to his family for Christmas. Willis, Alan Rickman, the score, and everything else about this movie are iconic, but what makes it so great is that Willis isn’t a superhero but a man. Yes, it’s the best Christmas movie of all time, but it’s also – in our opinion (and that of many others) that it’s the greatest action film ever made.

So, those are our picks for the twenty-five greatest action movies, but I’m sure there are titles we left off the list that you think belong on here with the others. Would you have included the Chow Yun Fat / Michelle Yeoh classic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)? Should the Jet Li / Maggie Cheung / Tony Leung film Hero (2002) have made the cut, or the Al Pacino and Robert De Niro pairing in Heat (1995)? Let’s discuss it in the comments!

Greenland 2: Migration is heading for a January 9, 2026 theatrical release. Today, a new trailer for the upcoming film dropped online and can be seen in the embed above. We get a better look at what the story deals with this time around. As the title suggests, now that the survivors have escaped the initial doom of the first film, their hideaway is no longer safe. There is talk of humanity’s salvation being centered around “The Crater” and that’s where our main family now journeys toward.

Waugh directed this one from a screenplay by Mitchell LaFortune and the first movie’s writer Chris Sparling. Here’s the synopsis: In the aftermath of a comet strike that decimated most of the earth, Greenland 2: Migration follows the Garrity family as they’re forced to leave the safety of their bunker in Greenland to traverse a shattered world in search of a new home.

When Greenland 2: Migration was being shopped around, it became a hot commodity. The post-apocalyptic movie was sold in the biggest deal to occur at the Cannes virtual market, with STX making a massive $75 million deal. Domestic rights for the film were bought for $25 million, while STX will also take all international rights from Anton in a pact that hits around $50 million. Multiple streamers were trying to snag the sequel, and STX made sure to be first in line for it. STX distributed the original movie and they had a matching option to grab the sequel. Producing this installment are Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road Pictures, Anton’s Sébastien Raybaud and John Zois, G-BASE’s Butler and Alan Siegel, and CineMachine’s Brendon Boyea. Executive producers are Robert Simonds, Noah Fogelson and Sam Brown for STX Entertainment, Ric Roman Waugh for CineMachine, and Chris Sparling.

Will Space Godzilla be in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova? https://www.joblo.com/space-godzilla-x-kong/ https://www.joblo.com/space-godzilla-x-kong/#respond Mon, 15 Dec 2025 20:37:16 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=876547 A WGA listing indicates that the Toho monster Space Godzilla might appear in the MonsterVerse movie Godzilla x Kong: Supernova

The post Will Space Godzilla be in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova? appeared first on JoBlo.

]]>

More than a decade has passed since Legendary Pictures secured the rights to Godzilla and other characters owned and created by the Japanese company Toho so they could launch a cinematic universe they call the MonsterVerse – and they also secured the rights to the King Kong character so he could be part of their MonsterVerse as well. Things got started with Godzilla in 2014, and since then the universe has expanded with Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong, the animated series Skull Island, the live-action series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. A third Godzilla / Kong mash-up is now on the way, aiming for a March 26, 2027 theatrical release. This one is called Godzilla x Kong: Supernova – and the Writers Guild of America West listing of the screenplay (filed under the title Zeus) may have accidentally given away the involvement of a monster from one of the Toho Godzilla movies: Space Godzilla!

Creative Team

Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire were both directed by Adam Wingard, but he has decided to return to his roots with the gonzo action horror thriller Onslaught rather than return for another round of monster brawls. The new sequel is being directed by Grant Sputore, who previously directed the Hilary Swank sci-fi thriller I Am Mother. Sputore is working from a screenplay by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse writer Dave Callaham. According to the WGA listing, I Am Mother writer Michael Lloyd Green also contributed to the script.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was the franchise’s highest-grossing installment and the highest-grossing Godzilla film of all time, pulling in $571.9 million at the worldwide box office. Kong: Skull Island was the previous MonsterVerse record holder, having made $568 million. Deadline hears that Godzilla x Kong: Supernova is described as a continuation of the franchise centering Godzilla, Kong, and an assortment of other Titans. It will feature several new human characters alongside Godzilla and Kong as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat.

Cast

The film stars Kaitlyn Dever (The Last of Us), Jack O’Connell (Unbroken), who is said to be playing Dever’s brother in the film, Delroy Lindo (Get Shorty), Alycia Debnam-Carey(Fear the Walking Dead), Matthew Modine (Stranger Things), and Dan Stevens, who is reprising the role of Titan veterinarian Trapper, the character he played in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Space Godzilla

The WGA listing tells us that the script crafted by Callaham and Green is “based on the characters Godzilla and Space Godzilla, owned and created by ToHo Co., LTD.” Space Godzilla, more commonly referred to by fans as SpaceGodzilla (no space after Space), first appeared in Toho’s 1994 film Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla. This creature looks quite similar to Godzilla, since it was the result of some of Godzilla’s cells being exposed to the radiation of a black hole, giving us “the merger of Godzilla’s genes with a crystalline organism in outer space.”

I’ve always felt that Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla was a very middle-of-the-road entry in the Godzilla franchise, but it could be interesting to see a MonsterVerse take on the Space Godzilla character, especially in a movie that would probably show the monster fighting Godzilla and Kong at the same time.

Spirit Halloween is about to see an increase in demand for masks of former political figures, as a TV series based on Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 crime thriller Point Break is catching a wave at AMC. The project originates from David Kalstein, who recently collaborated with Daniel Dae Kim on Amazon’s short-lived Butterfly series. Alcon Television Group and AMC Studios are also part of the production. According to Deadline, AMC won the rights to adapt Point Break in a highly competitive situation.

What’s the original Point Break about?

The original movie, starring Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves, Lori Petty, and Gary Busey, focuses on an F.B.I. Agent (Reeves) who goes undercover to catch a gang of surfers who may be bank robbers. Beloved by scores of fans, Point Break is a quintessential ’90s action classic, renowned for its unforgettable tension, style, and iconic imagery. After all, there’s no mistaking the masks Bodhi (Swayze) and his fellow surfers wear (Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Lyndon Johnson) while causing chaos and robbing people blind.

When does the new Point Break TV series take place?

Deadline reports that AMC’s upcoming series is set 35 years after the events of the original film and focuses on a dangerous heist crew with ties to the Ex-Presidents gang.

Where do we know David Kalstein from?

Kalstein will write the Point Break TV series, in addition to executive producing alongside Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, and Ben Roberts, president of television. Kalstein was a co-executive producer on Amazon’s Butterfly, which starred Daniel Dae Kim. Butterfly is a character-driven spy thriller that explores complex family dynamics within the treacherous world of global espionage. It’s centered on David Jung (Kim), an enigmatic and highly unpredictable former US intelligence operative living in South Korea, whose life is shattered when the consequences of an impossible decision from his past come back to haunt him. He finds himself pursued by Rebecca (Reina Hardesty), a deadly, sociopathic young agent assigned to kill him.

What do you think about David Kalstein applying a new coat of wax to Kathryn Bigelow’s Point Break for a new television series? Does the idea of it being set 35 years after the original film’s events give you hope? Let us know in the comments section below.

After last night’s tragic news about the sudden death of director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, it’s time to lighten the mood with a positive update. According to multiple reports, the second season of Prime Video’s apocalyptic series Fallout will now be released on Tuesday, December 16, at 6 p.m. PT, one day earlier than previously announced. New episodes of Fallout will hit the streaming network weekly until the season finale on February 4.

What is Fallout about?

Like the video games on which the live-action series is based, the Fallout series is set in a world where the future envisioned by Americans in the late 1940s comes crashing down through a nuclear war in 2077. The TV series tells an original story that is set in the world of the video games and will be canon to the game franchise. The story of the first season unfolds in and around a fallout shelter in Los Angeles, known as Vault 33. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Season 2 will be “a journey through the wasteland of the Mojave to the post-apocalyptic city of New Vegas.” New Vegas is a popular location in the video game franchise.

Where else can you experience Fallout?

In addition to Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout 3, and Fallout 4, the video game series also consists of the spin-offs Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 76, Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel, Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, Fallout Shelter, and Fallout Pinball. The first game takes place 219 years after a nuclear war, set in a post-apocalyptic Southern California. The protagonist, referred to as the Vault Dweller, is tasked with recovering a water chip in the Wasteland to replace the one in their underground shelter, Vault 13. Afterwards, the Vault Dweller must thwart the plans of a group of mutants, led by a grotesque entity named the Master.

Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Walton Goggins, Kyle MacLachlan, Moisés Arias, and Frances Turner star in the delightfully derranged series, which MGM Studios and Kilter Films produce in association with Bethesda Game Studios and Bethesda Softworks. Prime Video’s Emmy-nominated Fallout series is getting a third season, proving that the streamer knows a good thing when they see it.

Bob Odenkirk is anything but Normal in the action-packed teaser trailer for Ben Wheatley’s new bullet-chewing crime thriller https://www.joblo.com/normal-teaser-trailer/ https://www.joblo.com/normal-teaser-trailer/#respond Mon, 15 Dec 2025 16:23:55 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=876507 Bob Odenkirk embraces his inner "every man" for an off-the-wall action crime thriller in Ben Wheatley's Normal teaser trailer.

The post Bob Odenkirk is anything but Normal in the action-packed teaser trailer for Ben Wheatley’s new bullet-chewing crime thriller appeared first on JoBlo.

]]>

After kicking ass and taking names as the one-man-army Hutch Mansell in Nobody and Nobody 2, Bob Odenkirk is ready to embrace his “every man” energy again for Normal, an upcoming action crime thriller from filmmaker Ben Wheatley (Free Fire, Sightseers) and Magnolia Pictures.

What’s Normal about?

Ben Wheatley directs Normal. His credits include Down Terrace, Kill List, Sightseers, A Field in England, High-Rise, Free Fire; Happy New Year, Colin Burstead; Rebecca, In the EarthMeg 2: The Trench, the upcoming BULK, and the six-episode series Generation Z. The story finds Odenkirk playing Ulysses, a lawman who is thrust into the temporary role of the sheriff for the small sleepy town Normal after the previous one’s untimely death. When an out-of-town couple robs the town’s bank, Ulysses arrives on the scene to find that the town is hiding much more sinister, deep-seated secrets under its surface, and everyone – from the bartender to the priest – is in on it. And now Ulysses, who’s up till now focused only on running away from the demons of his past, must uncover the full extent of this criminal conspiracy. Normal has been given an R rating for strong bloody violence and language.

What goes on in the new teaser trailer?

In today’s teaser trailer for Normal, we go on a cozy ride-along with Odenkirk’s Ulysses. As he strolls through the quiet town, Ulysses is greeted by friendly faces, crooked smiles, and the scent of warm coffee in the winter air. However, when things take a turn for the unexpected, Ulysses must set aside his folksy nature to uncover the truth of a violent crime invading the unassuming city.

What did we think of Normal?

JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray recently had the opportunity to watch the film at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival and gave it a rating of 7/10 in his review. Bumbray said it was precisely what he wanted from a Bob Odenkirk-led action film. “It’s packed with carnage, with him in top form as both action star and leading man.
