Filmmaker Johannes Roberts knows how to bring a little energy to his fright flicks, including his latest, Primate. Frankly, I dug his work on The Strangers: Prey at Night and 47 Meters Down, both of which had me giddy with fun frights. In Primate, he explores another wild animal. And this time, we meet Ben, the chimpanzee. Frankly, I’d hate to spoil anything for audiences. However, I will say that this one is far bloodier and more gruesome than you might expect. The cast is impressive, especially Johnny Sequoyah and Oscar-winning actor Troy Kotsur (Coda). And I cannot say enough about Miguel Torres Umba as Ben.

I went into Primate, only watching the trailer. And when I sat down with Johnny Sequoyah, Troy Kotsur, and Johannes Roberts, the film impressed me even more. With the use of practical effects, Primate manages to create one of the most realistic cinematic animals I’ve witnessed. Ben is a fascinating character, and he came up often during the conversations.

Both Johnny and Troy discussed working with Mr. Roberts and finding the reality in their characters. As well, they had high praise for their on-screen co-star. I’ve admired Troy’s work for quite a while now, and I was equally impressed by Ms. Sequoyah here. As for Johannes, I had the pleasure of meeting the director back when The Strangers: Prey at Night was released, and thoroughly enjoyed meeting him back then. And it was terrific speaking with him about Ben, and this modern man-versus-nature creature feature.

Primate opens this Friday. You can check out our own Mike Holtz’s very positive take here.

Greenland 2: Migration arrives in theaters this Friday as the sequel to the unexpected 2020 apocalyptic hit. Set ten years after the events of the first film, the story follows a group of survivors who have been living in a bunker—until a new catastrophe forces them to search for another safe haven.

The film once again stars Gerard Butler, with Morena Baccarin returning as a key co-star.

What Is Greenland 2: Migration About?

After a decade underground, the bunker that once saved humanity becomes unsafe. The survivors must venture back into a hostile world in search of survival, facing new dangers while confronting the emotional toll of life after the apocalypse.

Is Greenland 2 Better Than the First Movie?

In many ways, yes—or at least just as strong.

 • The color palette, cinematography, and overall visual tone feel like a direct continuation rather than a traditional sequel
 • The film remains relentlessly intense, rarely easing up on the suspense
 • Several emotionally charged moments make it easy to root for the characters’ survival

Despite a relatively modest budget, the movie still feels big and epic, much like the original.

Interview With Morena Baccarin – Key Topics

I spoke with Morena Baccarin via Zoom ahead of the film’s release. During our conversation, we discussed:

 • The emotional core of Greenland 2
 • What it was like working again with Gerard Butler
 • The one item she’d take with her during the apocalypse
 • And yes… a Deadpool-related question snuck in as well

Should You See Greenland 2: Migration?

If you enjoyed the first film, this sequel is an easy recommendation. It’s tense, emotional, and visually impressive given its budget.

Greenland 2: Migration opens in theaters this weekend—and it’s well worth the trip.

Check out the full interview above and catch the film on the big screen.

What Is We Bury the Dead About?

At a time when zombie stories have fully entered the mainstream thanks to shows like The Walking Dead, it’s increasingly difficult to find a fresh angle on the undead. Enter filmmaker Zak Hilditch, best known for the excellent These Final Hours. With We Bury the Dead, Hilditch delivers a strikingly original and grounded take on the zombie genre—one that’s brought hauntingly to life by Daisy Ridley.

Rather than focusing on spectacle, We Bury the Dead takes a deeply personal and realistic approach. The result is a film that’s creepy, unsettling, and genuinely heartbreaking.

A More Grounded Take on Zombie Horror

In my conversation with Hilditch, the director discussed the ideas behind his latest film and his belief that the most effective horror is rooted in reality. As with his earlier work, We Bury the Dead finds its originality in emotional truth—much of it inspired by themes of loss and grief. It’s this grounding that makes the film feel so different from standard zombie fare.

Daisy Ridley and Brenton Thwaites on Performance and Tone

I also spoke separately with Brenton Thwaites and Ridley about their roles. Ridley opened up about the tragedy at the heart of her character, delivering an affecting and deeply sympathetic performance that ranks among her strongest work to date.

Thwaites, meanwhile, turns in another solid performance and proved to be an incredibly relaxed and thoughtful interview subject. He spoke highly of Ridley’s work and of the appeal of tackling a zombie film that prioritizes substance over shock.

Is We Bury the Dead Worth Seeing?

Yes. We Bury the Dead is currently in theaters and is well worth experiencing on the big screen, where its atmosphere and emotional weight fully land.

The first time I saw Oldboy, directed by filmmaker Park Chan-wook, I was in awe. From his brilliant work in the Vengeance trilogy to his latest, No Other Choice, he is one of the most original voices in cinema today. In the film, Lee Byung-hun portrays a man just trying to get by. When he loses his job due to layoffs, the desperate man decides to take serious measures to procure employment. Chan-wook’s latest is an excellent dark comedy that once again proves why the director of Lady Vengeance never takes the obvious route

Recently, I had the wonderful opportunity to speak with both Park Chan-wook and Lee Byung Hun. First up, it was a thrilling opportunity to chat with such a visionary. With a translator, the two of us discussed his darkly funny new feature. He was engaging and thoughtful, and it was exciting to speak with him for the first time regarding his work.

Afterwards, I spoke with his lead actor, Lee Byung Hun, and the man was incredibly charming. He discussed working with his brilliant director and the nature of the material. The actor explores an intriguing tightrope that he must walk, and he makes this character all the more compelling for it.

Park Chan-wook’s latest, No Other Choice, is currently in theatres and is well worth the price of admission.

About four weeks ago, I caught a press screening for an upcoming press day. I had no clue as to what I was about to witness as The Testament of Ann Lee began. Featuring the very talented Amanda Seyfried, who blew me away with her recent appearance on The Colbert Report, where she performed Joni Mitchell’s ‘California.’ The Mona Fastvold-directed work is bold, ambitious, and utterly mesmerizing. Seyfried brings depth, passion, and heart to this beautifully told tale. It’s my personal pick for best of the year. I’ve not seen anything quite like it, and I’ll be going to see it again in 70mm.

I recently sat down on Zoom with Amanda Seyfried, Mona Fastvold, Lewis Pullman, and Thomasin McKenzie. First up, I spoke with filmmaker Fastvold. With a script co-written with her regular collaborator Brady Corbet, she opened up about taking on this project. The filmmaker opened up about finding the incredible sound with musician/composer Daniel Blumberg. I’ve never seen anything like this feature, and Ms. Fastvold’s work is truly remarkable.

Next, I spoke with Lewis Pullman and Thomasin McKenzie. Lewis portrays the brother of Ann, William. Thomasin McKenzie shines as well, as one of Ann Lee’s followers. The two opened up about working with Amanda and Mona, and what a fascinating shoot it was to be a part of.

And to finish the day off, I had a delightful conversation with Amanda Seyfried. I’ve been the privilege of speaking to this lovely person several times in the past. And frankly, this may have been the one I was most thrilled to discuss. The excitement and love she has for Ann is palpable. And the work she puts into this performance is beyond impressive. She is absolutely stunning. And the conversation was a perfect way to end the year in interviews.

The Testament of Ann Lee opens in Limited Release this Christmas. You can check out our own Alex Maidy’s take here.

Arguably one of the greatest years for movies, 1999 saw the release of Kevin Smith’s Dogma which has been in distribution hell (no pun intended) for the past twenty-five plus years due to the rights of the film from Miramax and Harvey Windstein. Now thanks to Umbrella Entertainment the film came out on December 7 on VOD and physical media in all its 4K glory including a very rad steelbook edition (buy it HERE).

Upon a rewatch the film STILL holds up and is easily one of Kevin Smith’s best films that came out during his peak. And if you were raised Catholic like I was, the film is that much funnier.

So back during the week of it’s release I was able to sit down one on one with Kevin as we discussed the re-release, as well as he went into depth with behind-the-scenes stories including George Carlon and Alan Rickman. And we also had a fun moment talking about “Buddy Jesus” and the meme that it would become.

After talking everything Dogma-related, Kevin gave us an update on his long awaited sequel to Mallrats. And gave his opinion on the director’s cut of Batman Forever… which he may or may not have shown off before.

Also if you want to keep up with Kevin Smith on his projects and film reviews check out his podcasts “Fatman Beyond” and “Hollywood Babble-On”

Ok, confession time. Despite Fallout being one of the most popular game franchises of the last few decades, I had never played a single entry. So when Season One of Amazon’s Fallout series dropped, I came in with no baggage and no bar to clear. I figured I’d finally see what all the hype was about.

Well, much like the proverbial nukes that kick off the apocalypse, I was completely blown away.

The show ticked every box for me: retro-futurism, oddball characters, fresh spins on the gunslinger archetype, hulking mech suits, and monsters galore. It walked a creative tightrope that should have been impossible, and somehow pulled it off. I was an instant fan.

Why Fallout Season 2 Is So Exciting

In the time since, I’ve been working my way through the games and kicking myself for sleeping on this universe for so long. Now that Season Two is rolling around, I’m just as hyped as the old-school fans—especially knowing where we’re headed next.

We’re packing our bags and going to New Vegas.

And to borrow a popular Vegas phrase, I’m all in.

Fallout Season 2 Red Carpet at the Academy Museum

Fallout

Now that I’m officially drinking the Nuka-Cola, I was beyond excited to be invited to the Season Two premiere of Fallout, held at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.

Pulling up, the massive dome atop the iconic building glowed bright red, signaling a Vegas-style, post-apocalyptic shindig. Out front stood a full-scale Brotherhood of Steel power armor suit (sadly without an operator, an opportunity I regret not seizing).

I did my best to match the Fallout energy with my own suit: western red threads, coffin bolo tie, and cowboy hat astride. I was ready to chat with vault dwellers and wastelanders alike.

Fallout Season 2 Cast Interviews on the Red Carpet

On the sandy-brown carpet, next to a glowing Welcome to Las Vegas-style Fallout sign, I had the pleasure of speaking with several members of the cast, including:

 • Frances Turner (Barb)
 • Xelia Mendes-Jones (Dane)
 • Rafi Silver (Robert House)
 • Jon Daly (Snake Oil)
 • Adam Faison (mystery role)
 • Leer Leary (Davey)

Even the Ghoul himself, Walton Goggins, stopped by for a quick chat.

Since this is a Vegas-set season, I couldn’t resist testing my luck against the cast. We played a game of one-card draw, each pulling a card from my cowboy hat. Were the odds in my favor? Let’s just say, in this case, the house usually wins.

Fallout Season 2 Episode 1: Robert House Enters the Game

Following the red (sorry, brown) carpet, we screened the first episode of Season Two. It delivers a bloody good introduction to the season’s new heavy: the iconic Robert House, portrayed by Rafi Silver and series newcomer Justin Theroux.

While the episode doesn’t fully dive into New Vegas just yet, it smartly places our main characters back on the chessboard and teases the paths they’ll be walking in the episodes ahead.

Inside the Fallout After-Party

After the screening, the night rolled straight into an after-party fit for the end of the world. Beneath the glowing red dome, guests sampled flea soup cocktails and TV dinners as the lights of Los Angeles twinkled in the distance, rivaled only by buzzing neon Vegas sign recreations.

Vault-friendly old-school tunes filled the air. Showgirls walked the floor. The Rollerbrain of Bud Askins skittered around our feet, straight out of Vault 31. There were games of Whack-a-Commie, a walk-through vault experience, and a Vault-Tec lab inscribing custom yo-yos.

Kyle MacLachlan and series newcomer Kumail Nanjiani also stopped by for a chat. Kumail even mentioned being a JoBlo fan—so if you’re reading this, hey man!

Fallout

Final Thoughts on Fallout Season 2

All in all, the evening perfectly set the tone for what’s to come. For fans of New Vegas, the show’s adaptation of this iconic setting appears to be in very good hands.

To check out my full coverage of the event, hit the link below—and be sure to catch Fallout Season Two, now streaming on Amazon Prime.

See you in the wasteland.

Bradley Cooper impressed audiences and critics alike with his splendid take on A Star is Born. The film earned several awards, including Academy Award nominations for Lady Gaga and himself. Cooper’s latest may be equally compelling. Is This Thing On? takes an honest look at divorce and separation. The film features a terrific pairing of Laura Dern and Will Arnett as they navigate a failing relationship. It is a funny, touching, and unflinching look at the complicated reality of a family that begins to face changes. Cooper and Andra Day also star.

Recently, we spoke with both Will Arnett and Laura Dern. As a long-time fan of both, I was impressed with how honest their on-screen relationship was. Having spoken to both before, I jumped into Mr. Arnett’s co-writing of the script with Cooper. The film captures the world of stand-up comedy just as effortlessly as it does personal relations. As for Dern, she opened up about playing a character stepping away from a marriage as well as working with both Arnett and Cooper. It’s a big year for her, with us having recently chatted with her about her turn in Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly. Both movies seem to put her in the Oscar race this year.

Is This Thing On? is a terrific film. It’s a smart and satisfying comedic drama with impressive performances all around.

Whether it was Little Monsters, Gremlins, or even The NeverEnding Story, kids’ movies used to have a certain darkness to them. They allowed both kids and adults to get something out of them, thus widening their appeal. But I was shocked to see that the fantastical and very kid-centered, Dust Bunny, had actually received an R Rating. Having seen the film, it feels closer to the tone of Pushing Daisies, only from a child’s perspective. Sure, there are some scarier moments, but even the violence is shot around in a creative way. I’ve seen more brutal deaths in a PG-13 Marvel movie. Hopefully parents can overcome the rating and will still let their kids see it (you can check out Bumbray’s review HERE).

I spoke with writer/director Bryan Fuller and star Mads Mikkelsen about the film and they were as shocked as I was to learn that it had earned an R Rating. It sounds like there was one shot in particular that pushed the movie over the edge, which is really too bad. It will certainly limit the audience, and it could have served as a gateway horror to young kids. Mads also gets into what it was like to play someone with a bit more of a heroic edge than the many villains he’s played over the years. He’s infinitely charming and it really comes across in the interview, which you can check out above.

Dust Bunny plot:

Ten-year-old Aurora has a mysterious neighbor (Mads Mikkelsen) who kills real-life monsters. He’s a hit man for hire. So, when Aurora needs help killing the monster she believes ate her entire family, she procures his services. Suspecting that her parents may have fallen victim to assassins gunning for him, Aurora’s neighbor guiltily takes the job. Now, to protect her, he’ll need to battle an onslaught of assassins ― and accept that some monsters are real.

We are in the midst of one of the strangest marketing campaigns for a horror movie ever, complete with releasing full, spoilerific scenes, making it look like a Hallmark date night movie, and even offering photos of the star’s feet. It’s been…strange to say the least. I’m not entirely sure why they didn’t just take the approach of “Hey, this is a killer Santa movie!” Especially after the original literally had mothers protesting it. But that doesn’t mean that Silent Night, Deadly Night isn’t worth watching. Quite the opposite, in fact. I quite enjoyed this take on the classic Christmas Horror film, and you can check out my positive review HERE.

I was very excited to talk with stars Rohan Campbell and Ruby Modine, as well as writer/director Mike P. Nelson. Rohan and I get into the similarities between his Billy and his Halloween Ends character Corey Cunningham. Mike also teases some of his plans for a sequel if they are lucky enough to get the opportunity. I also made sure to find out what experience the three had with the original film. These were great talks, and you can check them out in the video above!

Silent Night, Deadly Night plot:

After witnessing his parents’ brutal murder on Christmas Eve, Billy grows up to deliver an annual spree of holiday violence. This year, his blood-soaked mission collides with love, as a young woman challenges him to confront his darkness. “Have you been naughty?”’

This Friday marks the official Netflix debut of one of the streamer’s most anticipated films of the year: Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. True, the film technically isn’t “new” anymore. Netflix gave it a solid two-week theatrical window, and it’s been playing in cinemas nationwide. But let’s be honest: a massive portion of the audience has been waiting for the at-home release, where it’s poised to become Netflix’s defining holiday hit.

A Darker, More Spiritual Turn for Knives Out

We’ve been covering this third Knives Out film extensively, starting with its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where I reviewed it. This latest entry takes a noticeably darker turn than the first two, digging into themes of faith, guilt, and empathy.

At the center of the mystery is a former boxer turned priest, played by Josh O’Connor, who finds himself investigating the death of a mean-spirited Monsignor in his parish—only to end up the prime suspect. And who better to call when things get messy than Benoit Blanc?

Why Benoit Blanc Shows Up Later Than Expected

Interestingly, Blanc’s role is a bit smaller this time. He doesn’t enter the story until the film’s second half. Writer-director Rian Johnson made the choice intentionally, wanting to re-energize the formula and shift the perspective toward O’Connor’s conflicted priest.

Sitting Down With Daniel Craig and Rian Johnson

I recently had the chance to take part in the Wake Up Dead Man virtual press junket. While I only landed one interview slot, the pairing was about as good as it gets: Daniel Craig and Rian Johnson. For a lifelong Bond fan, talking to Craig always comes with a bolt of nerves — having already interviewed him once before for No Time to Die, when he was super friendly and charming. But as expected, he couldn’t have been more gracious. In the interview, I try to keep the Bond fandom in check and focus instead on his other iconic role: Benoit Blanc.

Streaming Release Date

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery hits Netflix this Friday and is fully expected to dominate holiday viewing.

Movies based on real-life tragedies can always have a certain weight to them that makes the events unfolding all the more tense. In 2009, four friends on a fishing trip were stranded 70 miles off the coast when their boat capsized during a really bad storm. When the boat was found 43 hours later, only one of the men remained. The story depicted in Joe Carnahan‘s Not Without Hope is harrowing and truly something nightmares are made of for anyone who’s ever been out on the ocean. I know this exact scenario is a reason I get panic attacks whenever I’m out on a boat. My mind immediately goes to the absolute worst-case scenario and I’m sure others would agree. My review for the film comes out later this week, so keep an eye out for that.

I was able to chat with the main cast that includes Zachary Levi, Quentin Plair, Terrence Terrell, and Marshall Cook all about their experience making the movie. Not only did they spend a majority of their time in a raging water tank, but it was also at night, making for a very disorienting time filming. Not to mention the gravity of knowing that this is what happened to these people in real life. Outside of Levi, who portrayed survivor Nick Schuyler, the others didn’t have the benefit of being able to talk to their counterpart. So we get into what kind of research they went into for their roles and what resources they had available to them. This was an interesting chat, so make sure to check it out in the video above!

Not Without Hope plot:

Not Without Hope tells the harrowing true story of a tragic 2009 fishing trip taken by four friends — Nick Schuyler (Zachary Levi) and Will Bleakley (Marshall Cook), former University of South Florida football teammates, and NFL players Marquis Cooper (Quentin Plair) and Corey Smith (Terrence Terrell) — who are stranded at sea 70 miles off the coast of Clearwater, Florida after their boat capsizes. With the storm of the century fast approaching, the four friends are left to battle hypothermia, dehydration and the unrelenting elements in a fight for survival. As anxious families hold out hope for a miracle, U.S. Coast Guard Captain Timothy Close (Josh Duhamel) marshals every asset at his disposal to find the four men, resulting in the dramatic rescue of Schuyler 43 hours later.

Not Without Hope is playing In Theaters on December 12th, 2025.

Part of me does miss the days when comedies flourished. It seems like most are simply relegated to streaming and they don’t provide more than a few chuckles. Thankfully, this past weekend saw the theatrical release of what is likely my favorite comedy of the decade with Fackham Hall. The jokes per minute are absolutely out of control, with some of the best wordplay and background jokes that I can remember. It actually gives me a bit of hope that maybe the theatrical comedy isn’t dead (though sadly, it didn’t even place in the top 10 this past weekend). So do yourself a favor and support great comedies.

I was fortunate enough to chat with stars Katherine Waterston, Damian Lewis, Thomasin McKenzie, Tom Felton, Ben Radcliffe, and director Jim O’Hanlon about the film. We get into the fine line that they had to walk as actors, given that there’s some out there comedy, but it’s still set in a fairly grounded world. We also get into some of their favorite gags of the film and why comedy is very similar to drama in just how important it is to hit key beats. You can tell that all of these people really loved their experience on the film, and I believe that comes through on screen.

Over the past few years, I’ve become increasingly impressed by both Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal. And in their latest, Hamnet, the two disappear into the performances. The film tells the story of the inspiration behind William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Chloe Zhao brings a sense of utter realism to this, at times, heartbreaking yet awe-inspiring tale. Equal parts beauty and pain, the film brings this tale to life.

As I mentioned, I admire both Mescal and Buckley. The two have given some of my favorite performances over the last couple of decades. Speaking to both, they opened up about the source material – the novel and screenplay written by Maggie O’Farrell. Yet it was the last few moments of the interview, where Ms. Buckley gave such a refreshing and fascinating take on playing something tragic. Both of these amazing talents were lovely to speak with.

Next up, I spoke with the impressive Chloe Zhao. While I wasn’t taken with her Marvel entry Eternals, I am moved by her artful and quite gorgeous work in this and Nomadland. She opened up about bringing the story to life and the casting of the film’s stars.

Hamnet is now playing in limited release. Read our review!

The post Tinsel Town Interview: Kiefer Sutherland talks British pantomime, The Lost Boys on Broadway, & the Christmas spirit appeared first on JoBlo.

This holiday season, let Kiefer Sutherland help get you into the Christmas spirit with the gift that keeps on giving: British pantomime! As one of the most beloved forms of theater across the pond, pantomime brings an over-the-top approach to theater production for a funny, flirty, and flamboyant take on tradition. In Sutherland’s new holiday comedy, Tinsel Town, the actor who starred in The Lost Boys and Dark City plays Brad Mac, a flailing action star nearing the end of his Hollywood relevance, until an opportunity to star in a pantomime production of Cinderella affords him a new lease on life and his relationship with his daughter.

While waxing rhapsodic with Kiefer about Tinsel Town, we discover why he truly loves the theater and how British pantomime is a different animal than productions seen on and off Broadway. We also discuss the upcoming Broadway production of The Lost Boys, which Kiefer has seen rehearsals for. He takes us behind the scenes of the forthcoming show, albeit with little spoilers, and provides insight into why it’s about to become a must-see event.

In addition to discussing The Lost Boys, we also touch on Kiefer’s love of the holiday season and learn what puts him in good spirits during Christmas time.

Aside from interviewing Kiefer, I also reviewed Tinsel Town for JoBlo. Tinsel Town feels cringeworthy at first, but like any good holiday drama, it began to warm the center of my sentimental heart with its love of pantomime theatrics and interspersed moments of genuine charm. Tinsel Town will not be for everyone, but if you’re feeling like you need a pick-me-up this holiday season, you could find something special in this totally self-aware meta-narrative about celebrity, expectations, and tribute to pantomime theater. At its start, I expected the film to go off like a Christmas Cracker with no pop, but I was proven wrong time and again with a simple story told well and with heart. It might not be a new Christmas classic, but theater geeks are going to love it. I recommend checking it out, especially if you’re in the mood to add something new to your list of holiday fare.

I like to think I’m pretty laissez-faire about celebrity interviews. I’ve been doing them for well over a decade now, and I’m usually good at keeping my cool. But every once in a while, an interview hits differently. Last year it was chatting with Eddie Murphy for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. This year, it was the chance to talk with a trio of absolute legends for Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly: George Clooney, Adam Sandler and Laura Dern. Pretty big, right?

I certainly thought so as I sat down with all three to discuss their awards-contender Netflix film, which drops Friday, December 5th. In the movie, Clooney plays movie star Jay Kelly who, on the eve of a major career tribute, finds himself at a personal and professional crossroads. He leans on his long-time manager (Adam Sandler) and publicist (Laura Dern), who—despite being treated like employees—clearly care for him like family.

What stood out immediately was how much fun the trio had making Jay Kelly. Clooney clearly relished playing such a substantial, emotionally rich role, and his megawatt charisma was on full display during our quick chat. Sandler and Dern were equally great, and it turns out the two are actually best friends off-screen. They told me their families even vacation together, something that makes their on-camera and on-interview chemistry completely obvious here.

For more on Jay Kelly, you can check out my full review HERE or catch the film yourself when it premieres on Friday.

One of the best action movies currently in theaters is Sisu: Road to Revenge. While the film has only made a modest mark at the box office, critics have rallied behind it, with many comparing its relentless momentum to Mad Max: Fury Road. The strong reception is already paying off for director Jalmari Helander, who is deep into pre-production on his upcoming Rambo prequel. We spoke with Helander while he was in Thailand prepping the film.

Stephen Lang Joins as the Villain — and Wanted a Different Role

We also recently talked to Stephen Lang, who plays the Russian villain Dragonov — the man revealed to be responsible for murdering Aatami’s (Jorma Tommila) family. Helander laughed when recalling Lang’s reaction to joining the film:

“Actually, when I talked for him for the first time, he said that when he first saw Sisu, he thought that someone has stolen his role,” he laughed.

Originally, Helander imagined a younger antagonist. But that changed instantly:

“When the idea of Stephen Lang came, I immediately knew that it’s really, really a good idea, because I think it’s cool to see two old dudes having a fight.”

Why Sisu 2 Is a Lean, Mean 85-Minute Machine

Helander also discussed his choice to keep Sisu 2 at a tight 85 minutes — something critics have praised for its efficiency and intensity:

“You have a certain amount of money, if you use it and make the shortest thing that you can do, which still is a feature film. It basically means you have more money to spend on every minute. Like, rather than doing a three hour film. You would need so much more money to do it.

I think 90 minutes is a perfect length for a movie, and my stories are pretty straightforward. It’s not too complicated because I prefer simple things, and most of the time, the simpler the idea for an action film, the better. So I don’t know. That’s how I think about it.”

Helander on Rambo: Expect His Own Take

While he remained tight-lipped about the Rambo prequel, Helander hinted at how his perspective will shape it:

“Well I haven’t shot the film yet, so it’s still a work in progress, but I’m sure that Christopher Nolan would do a different kind of Rambo movie than what I’m making,” he said with a laugh.

Sisu 2: Road to Revenge is now playing in theaters.

A lean, brutal, tightly crafted action sequel — and one that’s clearly just the start of a big moment for Helander.

It’s probably safe to say that Netflix has a bumper crop of awards fare this year. Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, Kathryn Bigelow’s A House of Dynamite, and Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly all have serious Oscar buzz. Yet, the movie that seems most likely to earn a whole slew of nominations is arguably the most low-key: Clint Bentley’s Train Dreams.

What’s Train Dreams About?

Based on the novel by Denis Johnson, Train Dreams follows the life of logger Robert Grainer (Joel Edgerton) as he lives in turn-of-the-century Idaho with his wife (Felicity Jones) and child. He witnesses a horrific act: a Chinese rail worker is murdered by a group of white workers who suspect him of theft. The violence of this act haunts Grainer’s life, which is marked by tragedy. Yet it also offers a glimpse of how a “normal” life can be epic and meaningful, as Grainer comes to terms with a changing world and his place in it.

Where is Train Dreams Available?

Train Dreams dropped on Netflix last Friday and is now streaming. Since its debut, the film has become a hot topic on social media, with many taking to X and Letterboxd to rave about the unexpectedly powerful movie. Fans have praised the film’s visuals and sense of atmosphere, but above all, viewers have been left in awe of the performances.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with four of the movie’s stars, including lead Joel Edgerton, who revealed that he had tried to option the rights to the novel himself long before being cast. It was a pleasure speaking with him and Felicity Jones, who discussed the challenge of portraying a character mostly present in flashes of memory. William H. Macy and Kerry Condon, despite their smaller roles, also shared how proud they were to be in the film—both are people who own remote homes in nature and hope the movie inspires viewers to connect more with the natural world around them.

You can read my review HERE and watch the interviews embedded at the top of this article, but trust me: you aren’t likely to see a better film than Train Dreams this year.

In an age of faltering big-budget films, A24 has always been the antithesis of studio excess, often securing big stars for small, intimate, indie-style projects. With their latest release, Eternity, director David Freyne explores the idea of the afterlife—but it’s so much more than a simple “Where do I go when I die?” story.

The film unfolds in a train station where the newly deceased must choose where—and with whom—they want to spend eternity. Elizabeth Olsen leads as Joan, who dies as an old woman but arrives in the afterlife in her prime. She faces a daunting decision: spend forever with her first husband and first love, Luke (Callum Turner), or with her second husband, Larry (Miles Teller), the man with whom she spent the majority of her life.

I absolutely adored this film. Not only does it feature three incredibly likable leads, but it strikes the perfect balance between heartstring-tugging emotion and well-timed humor. And of course, there’s drama—how could there not be when two husbands are competing for their wife in the afterlife? The movie is beautifully shot and blends comedy, drama, romance, and imagination with ease. In a stacked year for films, Eternity is easily a top-five contender for me.

A24 was kind enough to arrange a screening in my hometown of Syracuse, NY. Even better, I had the chance to represent JoBlo and interview the three main stars—Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller, and Callum Turner—along with director David Freyne. I couldn’t resist asking each of them what their ideal eternity would be, and of course, we dug into the film, their characters, and more.

Check out the interview above and check back tomorrow for our full review. Eternity opens on Wednesday, November 26th!

What happens to us when we fall asleep? Where do we go? Who do we become? What are our limits? Ultimately, the answers to those questions are up to you, as dreams are infinitesimal in how they explore our psyche, test our imagination, and tap into deep-rooted fears. In Netflix‘s In Your Dreams, a sister-brother duo discovers a way to utilize dreams to help mend their fractured family dynamic, though the consequences may be more than they’ve bargained for.

Recently, we spoke with the stars of In Your Dreams: Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Cristin Milioti (The Penguin), Craig Robinson (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Jolie Hoang-Rappaport (The Monkey King), and Elias Janssen (Jane the Virgin) about Netflix’s latest animated adventure, and things got cerebral.

While speaking with Simu and Cristin, we discover if the duo monitored their dreams in any way during the film’s production, and how their voice acting roles compare to other live-action performances. We also discuss cherished stuffed animals from years’ past, their favorite type of dream, and if either is capable of lucid dreaming.

As for Craig, Jolie, and Elias, we delve into Craig’s natural-born swagger and his approach to playing Baloney Tony, a sassy giraffe stuffed toy that acts as the sister and brother’s guide through the Land of Dreams. We also discuss the group’s favorite types of dreams, the recording conditions for the film, and their favorite aspects of voice acting.

In the film from director Alex Woo, Stevie and her little brother Elliot journey into the wildly absurd landscape of their own dreams to ask the Sandman to grant them the perfect family. When things don’t go according to plan, the duo must work together to fight their way out of a living nightmare to save their family from an unknown fate.

Like Spellbound, another Netflix animated joint, In Your Dreams confronts themes of separation and divorce. Thankfully, there’s much more to the film than salving your emotional wounds. The movie presents viewers with a grand adventure through a world of limitless possibilities, featuring plenty of laughs, familiar callbacks to childhood fears, and unbridled imagination that make it one of the best animated films of this year. The post Sisu 2: Interview with Stephen Lang and Jorma Tommila about the awesome action sequel appeared first on JoBlo.

]]>

A few weeks ago I had a chat with Sisu: Road to Revenge director Jalmari Helander. That’s coming soon, but in our chat he mentioned that when he was looking to cast an antagonist for his sequel, the first actor to pop into his head was none other than Stephen Lang. He told me that when he approached Lang to play the movie’s villain, Red Army officer Igor Draganov, who is responsible for the murder of hero Aatami Korpi’s (Jorma Tommila) family, he joked with the director that he felt like Tommila had stolen his role, as he’s so identified with playing crusty older vigilante types (perhaps most memorably in the Don’t Breathe movies). Recently, I had the chance to talk with Lang, and when I asked him about that comment, he laughed, saying he wondered why Helander wanted him when he already had an amazing older guy as his hero.

But Lang — who I must say has always been one of the coolest guys to talk to — said what got him excited about playing the villain was the fact that Igor is like Aatami’s dark reflection, and that had they been born in each other’s shoes, it’s not hard to imagine them going down each other’s paths, with them both these elemental forces of pure destruction. You can check out my interview with Lang embedded above (of course — I had to share my love of Michael Mann’s Manhunter with him), but I also got to chat with Jorma Tommila, albeit by email, with him apparently quite a shy, quiet, laid-back kind of guy. Here’s a transcript of our (short) exchange:

How did you react when Sisu became an unexpected international hit? Did you ever think it would make you an action hero in your sixties?
Both international popularity and the fact that I became an action hero at my age were big surprises for me.

What was the biggest physical challenge of the sequel?
The most challenging thing was keeping my mind and body in a state of war for the entire ten weeks of filming.

You have to act completely without dialogue — so how do you convey your character’s motivations/emotional arc?
It is a complex process that requires both inner understanding and strong external expression. The portrayal of a character must become personal. I think the most important task is to create the character of Aatami Korpi, who lives and acts like he’s in a state of war, under extreme physical and emotional pressure. Grief and anger from a lost family, a destroyed life and a deep desire for revenge. However, those feelings come with the hope and the possibility of a new beginning and a strong faith in a potential new life. As an actor I had to physically strain myself and find a similar state mentally by creating mental images, digging up events from my memories that move my mind. To strive to find at least a part of the psychophysical state in which the character has to be and act and create from it a tangible expression. When this character is ready, the actor can be thrown into any scene or any situation in the film and he will always act correctly.

If Sisu 3 becomes a reality would you be on board?
I think so.

I liked how the final showdown with Stephen Lang wasn’t overly choreographed. It looked like two guys doing whatever they could to kill each other. That said, was there a specific choreography you had to follow?
Yes, we practiced basic choreography but during filming we also improvised a bit.

Jalmari is doing John Rambo next. Would you potentially be up for a role in that?
It depends on the role.

Colin Farrell remains one of the most exciting actors working today. He is a risk-taker. And his latest Netflix feature, directed by Edward Berger, once again gives Farrell something new to take on. It’s a terrific performance, one that skillfully explores the effects of gambling addiction. Ballad of a Small Player also features stunning work from Fala Chen, who portrays a charismatic character. The two performances play opposite each other beautifully.

Edward Berger is an impressive filmmaker. Aside from his exceptional work in German cinema, including the stunning All Quiet on the Western Front, he continued to impress with the taut feature, Conclave. The filmmaker discussed working with a talent such as Colin and his discovery of Fala Chen.

My first time interviewing Mr. Colin Farrell was, I believe, for In Bruges. Since then, I’ve had the great pleasure of speaking with this incredible person and actor on several occasions. He truly is one of the kindest people I’ve ever had the opportunity to interview and chat with. During our discussion with both Fala and himself, the actor gave one of the most impressive answers about this business I’ve ever heard. It’s a terrific interview, and Fala was a delight as well.

I truly dug this flick. Check out Ballad of a Small Player (read our review), currently available on Netflix.

Tim Burton is one of the most recognizable filmmakers of all time. A mere frame of his films tends to be enough to indicate who directed it, and that’s truly special. From Beetlejuice to Batman to Ed Wood, the prolific filmmaker has had quite an impressive filmography. So it’s great to see his life and films get a documentary, Life in the Line, cataloguing it all. From Burton’s very early career to how he almost quit filmmaking after Dumbo and all the stuff in between. And I should note that the CEO/Founder of JoBlo Media himself, Berge Garabedian, actually has a producer credit on the doc!

I was fortunate enough to pick the brain of director Tara Wood about her approach to Tim Burton’s story. We get into why she opted for four-hour-long episodes versus a standard feature-length approach. We also get into her favorite Burton film and how she was able to utilize the footage that she did. I know I was extremely impressed by the stuff of Burton working at Disney, which I had no idea was even publicly available. This documentary is a must for fans but even those with even the slightest bit of curiosity towards Burton as a filmmaker. I know it made me want to watch through his entire filmography again. You can check out our conversation in the embedded video above!

Tim Burton: Life in the Line plot:

From his early days at Disney to the making of Edward ScissorhandsBatmanThe Nightmare Before Christmas, and Wednesday, the series traces Burton’s evolution from misunderstood artist to cultural architect, exploring how he redefined Halloween, inspired generations of outsiders, and built a cinematic family of misfits and dreamers.

Tim Burton: Life in the Line is Currently Available Streaming HERE. Check it out – it’s a really great docuseries and pretty definitive for fans of Burton.

I’ve always been such a fan of Famke Janssen, going back to when she established one of the greatest Bond Girls/Femme Fatales as Xenia Onatopp in Goldeneye. Then she became the definitive Jean Grey for many of us in the X-Men Franchise. And I absolutely loved her in the severely underrated Boy Kills World a few years ago. Now, she’s starring in the Netflix series, Amsterdam Empire, where she finally gets to make something in both her native language and her hometown.

I was fortunate to talk to Famke about Amsterdam Empire as well as some of her memorable roles over the years. We get into what it was like for her to be a producer on her new Netflix show, as well as contribute to the costume design. She also addresses the rumors about her potential appearance in an upcoming Avengers movie. Though, those hoping for a return may need to damper those expectations. This was a great talk, and you can check it out in the embedded video above.

Amsterdam Empire plot: Jack van Doorn, the rich and notorious founder of the coffee shop empire Jackal, has had to fight his entire career against criminals, competitors, and absurd Dutch laws to become the biggest of them all. When his affair with a well-known journalist comes to light, it turns out that his most dangerous enemy has been living under his roof all this time: his betrayed wife, Betty (Famke Janssen), an ex-pop diva who knows all his weak spots and secrets and will not rest until she has taken everything from him.

Dave Bautista is one of the most reliable big-screen heroes around. And an incredibly cool guy. The actor (and wrestler) takes his work very seriously, and it shows. In his latest, Trap House (read our review), Bautista plays a DEA agent who also has a complicated relationship with his son (played by Jack Champion). It features an impressive young cast that includes Champion and Sophia Lillis of It fame. While Dave takes a slight backseat role, allowing the younger stars to shine, he has an active producer role this time around.

Recently, I sat down with Dave to talk Trap House. I’ve had the pleasure of speaking to this fine fellow many times. And each time gets better. Mr. Bautista opened up to taking on a producer role. He discussed working with the young Mr. Champion. The two work beautifully together, and the film certainly sets up more father/son adventures in the future.

And finally, I asked Dave about the upcoming Road House 2 and his work in the forthcoming Highlander. His excitement was palpable as he talked about the two projects. The actor shared how his involvement in both came about, as well as a few other cool tidbits you’ll want to hear about Highlander.

Trap House opens this Friday in theatres.

The post Interview: Edgar Wright, Glen Powell, and Lee Pace Talk The Running Man appeared first on JoBlo.

Edgar Wright, the man behind one of my all-time favorite trilogies, is back. And this time, he has reimagined the Stephen King story, The Running Man. Yeah, the Arnold Schwarzenegger hit. Aside from elements of the story, Wright’s take is a very different one that doesn’t pull punches on the on-screen violence. He also happens to have hit a home run with the casting of Glen Powell. The actor nails the role and may be one of the most charismatic action heroes today. The film also stars Josh Brolin, Lee Pace, Emilia Jones, Katy O’Brian, Michael Cera, William C. Macy, and more.

The only time I’ve interviewed Mr. Powell was for The Expendables 3. Somehow, he remembered. Glen is one of the nicest guys to interview. He’s funny as hell, charming, and incredibly kind. And his geeking out about working with the great Edgar Wright was a real treat. Speaking of Mr. Wright. It’s always a pleasure to speak with this man. Interestingly, he provided a remarkably detailed description of the original book cover. Let’s just say, 2025 was perfect timing for this.

Last, but not least, we sat down with Lee Pace. Without giving much away, I wasn’t exactly sure who he played early on. However, the performance becomes clear, and he makes for a super cool character. That’s ultimately what I appreciate in Edgar’s work. The man has a knack for great casting, sharp scripts, and moments of humor mixed with action.

For more about Edgar Wright’s The Running Man, make sure you check out our review!

The Running Man opens on November 14th in theatres.

Of all the actresses working in horror today, none is more exciting than Mia Goth. It’s tempting to call her the greatest scream queen of our era, but Goth’s performances are different. She’s almost more like the Robert De Niro or Daniel Day-Lewis of horror, with her contributing shocking, lived-in, and realistic performances to a whole slew of the most shocking movies of the last couple of years. Her performance in Ti West’s XPearlMaXXXine trilogy remains a striking achievement, with many taking serious issue with the fact that she was overlooked by the academy, especially in Pearl. Additionally, she was superb in Brandon Cronenberg’s Infinity Pool and has consistently delivered standout work since many of us first noticed her, notably in Gore Verbinski’s A Cure for Wellness.

As such, when she was cast in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein,I thought she would be playing The Bride of Frankenstein, even though this wasn’t part of Mary Shelley’s novel (although Kenneth Branagh included it in his film). Of course, I was wrong and Goth is cast in a role that totally subverted my expectations of her, with her cast as Victor Frankstein’s love interest, Elizabeth. In other versions of the story, Elizabeth is Victor’s steadfast fiancée, but here she is married to his brother, and actually becomes far more enamoured of Jacob Elordi’s The Creature, who she views with total and utter compassion, with their relationship giving the movie a tragic dimension. It’s rare for Goth to play a character who radiates kindness and goodness from start to finish, so I was eager to see her take on the role when I interviewed her recently for the film’s streaming release (it’s now streaming on Netflix). Goth proved to be a considerate, thoughtful interview, and it’s clear that both this role and her work with del Toro meant a lot to her. Check out the interview embedded above and let us know in the comments what you thought of the film.

Several episodes of Mayor of Kingstown are already available to stream for Paramount+ customers. So, there’s a collective of people who know how intense the new season becomes. The terrifying thing is that, based on the episode count, they ain’t seen nothing yet. It gets so much worse, in an entertaining way, of course. Recently, we had the pleasure of speaking with a handful of stars from the crime drama series created by Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon, including Jeremy Renner (Wind River, The Avengers, The Bourne Legacy), Edie Falco (The Sopranos, Nurse Jackie, The Parenting), Laura Benanti (No Hard Feelings, The Gilded Age, She Loves Me), and Hugh Dillon (Flashpoint, Durham County, Ginger Snaps: The Beginning).

During our chats, we discuss Jeremy Renner’s favorite and most stressful aspects of playing Mike McClusky, as well as which other Taylor Sheridan property he’d like to crossover with. While speaking with Edie Falco, we touch on her history of playing calculated and sharp women throughout several films and television series. What draws her to these roles? Does she seek them out, or do they find her? We also learn what the Mayor of Kingstown’s set is like between takes. Do the actors relax, or do they maintain the tension to avoid disrupting the mood?

While speaking with Laura Benanti, we find out if the prison set is as genuinely terrifying as it appears on screen, and if there’s any form of counseling available on set to help actors process intense and potentially traumatic events. Next, we speak with Hugh Dillon about what makes a prison such a fascinating place to tell stories, and we learn about his inspiring journey of reconnecting with Taylor Sheridan after battling substance abuse and other significant life hurdles.

Here’s the official synopsis for Mayor of Kingstown Season 4:

In season four, Mike’s control over Kingstown is threatened as new players compete to fill the power vacuum left in the Russians’ wake, compelling him to confront the resulting gang war and stop them from swallowing the town. Meanwhile, with those he loves in more danger than ever before, Mike must contend with a headstrong new Warden to protect his own while grappling with demons from his past.

Are you enjoying Mayor of Kingstown Season 4 so far? Do you agree that it’s the best season of the show yet? Let us know in the comments section below.

Cooper Raiff is an actor/director who gained attention for his work in Cha Cha Real Smooth, Shithouse, and his latest, the Mubi series Hal & Harper. The writer/director/actor clearly loves the challenge. Hal & Harper explores the fractured, yet loving, relationship between brother and sister. As well, the series features an impressive performance from the terrific Mark Ruffalo as their struggling father. The cast also includes Betty Gilpin, Alyah Chanelle Scott, Christopher Meyer, and more. It’s a fascinating take on a family struggling with the changes life throws their way.

I recently had a terrific chat with Cooper Raiff and Lili Reinhart about their latest Mubi series. Mr. Raiff opened up about his desire to take this project on at every level. As well, it was clearly a project of love; Ms. Reinhart also appeared to share in that passion for the project. I asked the two about creating such remarkably truthful characters, ones who don’t always make the right decision. It’s an impressive series that balances a human drama with very real situations and a sly sense of humor. I dug it.

Hal & Harper is currently streaming on Mubi. If you are looking for a satisfying watch, I recommend checking out this very human drama (check out our own Alex Maidy’s rave review).

In the six years since It: Chapter Two concluded the adaptation of Stephen King’s iconic novel, Bill Skarsgard’s portrayal of Pennywise has become a staple of Halloween costumes and nightmares. But, the foray into Derry was only the beginning as producers Barbara and Andy Muschietti have teamed with writer Jason Fuchs to plumb the depths of King’s fictional Maine town by expanding on backstories hinted at in It. Welcome To Derry is a long-form exploration into the origins of the monstrous entity claiming children decades before the events of the first film and gives us more insight into the horrors we have seen in the two part movie.

It: Welcome to Derry (read our review) takes place in 1962, twenty-seven years before the events of It: Chapter One. Centered on the children living in Derry who begin to experience the manifestations of Pennywise, the series shows us the parents and ancestors of characters from the films including Mike Hanlon’s grandparents Charlotte (Taylour Paige) and Leroy as well as Dick Hallorann (Chris Chalk), better known for his experiences at the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. As the series once again shows kids facing off with horrifying visions, we also find out about those who are aware of Pennywise’s long presence in Derry and how it has been afflicting the town for generations.

I spoke with the cast and creators of It: Welcome to Derry about the series. Taylour Paige and Jovan Adepo talked about their experiences meeting Bill Skarsgard in his Pennywise costume as well as the balance of historical events within the fictional past of Derry. Chris Chalk talked about whether he looked at other actors who have portrayed Dick Hallorann for inspiration or if he made the role his own while Stephen Rider talked about the non-supernatural horrors that his character faces in the series. James Remar and Kimberly Norris Guerrero discussed the bond between their characters and what they felt was most important in connecting this story to the novel. Showrunners Jason Fuchs and Brad Kane talked about their favorite easter eggs while Barbara Muschietti and director Andy Muschietti reflected on whether anyone else could have led this series as well as why they chose for the horrors to look the way they do. Check out the full interviews in the embed above.

It: Welcome To Derry is now airing on HBO and HBO Max.
